Literary Blunders.

fcho book the title of the Wicked Bible . A prior circumstance , indeed , had occurred , which induced the government to be more vigilant on the Biblical press . The learned Bishop Usher one day hastening to preach at Paul's Cross , entered the shop of one of the stationers , us booksellers were then called , and inquiring for a Bible of tbe Loudon edition , when le canm lo look for hia text , to his

astonishment and his bono-, he discovered that tho verse was omitted from the copy he had got . This gave the first occasion of complaint to the king of the insufferable negligence aud incapacity ofthe London press . The Vinegar Bible , * printed in 1717 , at the Clarendon Press , derives its name from the erratum in the title cf the 20 th Chapter

of Luke , in which " Parable of the Vineyard " is printed "Parable of the Vinegar . " In the first edition there is a misprint in Ruth iii . 15 , thus : " And He went into a city . " Through this mistake it gained the title of the "He Bible . " In a subsequent issue tho word was altered , and that is called tho " She Bible . " A large impression of Dutch English Bibles was burnt by order of

the Assembly of Divines for these three errors : — Genesis xxxvi . 24 . — "This is that ass that found rulers in fche wilderness "—for mule . Ruth iv . 13 . — "The Lord gave her corruption "—for conception . Lukexxi . 28 . — "Look up , and lift up your hands , for your condemnation draweth nigh" —for redemption .

Field printed in 1653 what was called the Pearl Bible , froTn its diminntive type in printing . It contained amongst others the following notable errata : — Romans vi . 13 . — " Neither yield ye your members as iustruments of righteousness nnto sin "—for unrighteousness . Firsfc Corinthians vi . 9 . — " Know ye not thafc the unrighteous

shall inherit tbe Kingdom of God " for shall not inherit . The Roman Catholic Missal issued in France , was once the subject of a ludicrous blunder . By the accidental substitution of an " v " for au " A , " the word calote ( au ecclesiastical cap or mitre ) was printed culotte ( breeches ) . The error occured in the directions for conducting the service , and the sentence as altered read " Here fche

priest will take off his culotte . " . 1 " A printer's widow in Germany , while a new edition of the Bible was printing at her house , one night took an opportunity of going into the office to alter thafc sentence of subjection to her husband , pronounced upon Eve in Genesis chap . 3 v . 16 . She took out the two first letters of the word HERR , and substituted N A in their place ,

thus altering fche sentence from " and he shall be thy Lord ( Herr ) to " and he shall be thy fool" ( Narr ) . Ifc is said her life paid for this intentional erratum . " Zachary Boyd , f minister of the Barony Church , Glasgow , in the time of Charles I ., translated the Bible into verse , the MS . being preserved in the library of the University of Glasgow . This is how ho treats the history of Jonah : —

" What house is this , whero's neither coal nor candle , Where I no thing but guts of fishes handle ? The like of this on earth man never saw , A living man within a monster's maw . In all the earth like nnto me is none , Farre from all living I heere lye alone , Where I entombed in melancholy sink , Choak ' fc , suffecat , with excremental stink . "

Dr . Lee writes , " I do not know any book in which ifc is so difficult to find a very correct edition as the English Bible . " What is in England called the Standard Bible , is that printed afc Oxford in 1769 , which was superintended by Dr . Blayney ; yefc ifc has been ascertained that there are at least one hundred and sixteen errors in

it . A man once gained access to the Clarendon printing office in Oxford , when tho formes of a new edition of the Episcopal Prayer Book had just been made up and were ready for the press . In tho portion of fche forme containing the marriage service , he substituted •the letter " k " for the letter " v" in the word live ; and thus the

vow , " to love , honour , & c ., so long as ye both shall live , was made to read , " so long as ye both shall like . " A correspondent of the Notes and Queries , states that in an edition of Shakespeare's work , in the Merchant of Venice , Act III . Scene 2 , where Portia speaks of "The virgin tribute paid by howling Troy , " the last words ran , "howlingTory . "

Pope , in a note on Measure for Measure , informs us that its story was taken from Cinthio ' s Novels , Dec . 8 Nov . 5 ( that is , Decade 8 , Novel 5 . ) The critical Warbnrton , in his edition of Shakespeare , put the words in full length thus , December 8 , November 5 . De Quincy once detected in a pirated edition of Buchan's " Domestic Medicine , " a misprint which might havo led to tragic

consequences . The author was made to caution his readers against taking more than twenty-five ounces of opium afc a single dose—a quality sufficient to kill a dozen horses . Ounces had heen misprinted for grains—a grain being the fonr hundred and eightieth part of an ounce . And this trustworthy " guide to health , " was in tho hands of a wife of a small farmer . "Book of Rarities , " by Bro . EDWAKD ROBEETS P . M . ( To be continued . )
