Wednesday's Oourt Circular contains the following announcement : —Her Majesty received this ( Wednesday ) evening the news of the betrothal of her beloved gtandson , the Duke of York , to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck , to which union the Queen has gladly given her consent .

Mr . and Mrs . Ernest Crawshaw Elgood are as unfortunate in the law courts as they were on the river . After enjoying themselvos at Moulsey Eegatta their punt was struck and capsized by a launch belonging to the General Electric Power and Traction

Company , and they were thrown into the water ; Mrs . Elgood received a shook to her system and suffered injury to her voice j the picnic appliances and some clothing on the punt were lost ; and tbe two , after they had been saved from drowning , were

compelled to pass tho night at a riverside hostelry . They now sought to recover damages from the company who own the launch , and their claim was tried before Mr . Justice Grantham and a common jury . Tbe defence set np was that the plaintiffs

wore themselves responsible for the occurrence , because , although the night was dark , they neglected to show a light or announce in any manner their presence on the stream . Under these circumstances the jury gave a

verdict for tbe defendants . Thafc evening on the river has proved a costly one to Mr . and Mrs . Elgood , and ought to have counter , balanced by an extra supply of preliminary pleasure , suoh as is not often found in the mild sport of a regatta . —Daily Telegraph .
