r | TH _ B , _ is gold , and gold in vast quantities , in other places than _ L Klondyke ; places , too , within the reach of an ordinary gold seeker . Take for instance Western Australia , with its vast fields of rich ore . Here we have any number of mines ; some rich beyond the dreams of avarice , and others paying their way well , but why some of the best should be comparatively neglected by the English investor is a puzzle . There is the Herbert
Gold Mine , whose £ 1 fully paid shares now stand at 17 s 6 d on the London Stock Exchange . This mine is certain to attract considerable attention by reason of the fact of its careful and steady development , and fche very favourable report of Mr . Griffith , the well-known mining engineer , who , after a thorough inspection of the mine on behalf of the board , has informed the directors that " he considered there was £ 500 , 000 worth of ore in sight , ready to stope out ; for it appears that No . 3 shaft is now down over 200 ft . while No . 3 shaft winze has reached the 166 ft . level , where the big
reef has been exposed , and gold is seen freely in the stone . Tho following are the assays of various samples taken from No . 3 shaft on 22 nd October 1897 : —At the 30 ft . level , 3 oz . 3 dwt . of gold per ton ; 140 ffc . level , loz . 19 dwt . ; 170 it . level , 3 oz . Sdwt . ; and those from the winze have assayed 3 oz . 2 dwt . of gold per ton . Such remarkable evidence as to both quantity and quality of ore is a rare occurrence , and when it becomes generally known what claims to public support tbe Herbert Mine possesses , the shares now standing at 17 s 6 d should find a quotation at more than double their present figure .
