Lodge of the Province was held on J _ the 26 th ult ., in the Masonic Hall , at Taunton , under the banner of the Fidelity and Unanimity Lodge , No . 34 8 , and presided over by the Deputy Prov . G . M . Bro . Colonel W . Long , in the unavoidable and much regretted absence of the . Prov . G . M . M . Bro . R . C . Else who , it was stated , was detained by his mayoralty duties at Bridgwater , in connection with the Town Council nominations .

The Prov . G . Secretary Bro . F . T . Elworthy having called the roll of the Lodges , all those in the Province being represented , next read the minutes of the Provincial Grand Lodge held at Keynsham last year , and they were confirmed . The Prov . G . Treasurer Bro . C . W . Radway , of Bath , presented the annual statement of accounts , snowing a balance in hand of - £ 87 us lod .

Bro . Radway was unanimously re-appointed Prov . G . Treasurer on the motion of Bro . Elworthy , seconded by Bro . J . Burnett , and congratulated on his restoration . ; to health after a severe illness . The Officers for the ensuing year were appointed and invested as follow :

THE annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Masons was held at the Town Hall , Hastings , on

Sussex.

Wednesday , 27 th ult . It had been the intention of : H . R ,. JH . the Duke of Connaught Provincial Grand Master to preside , but the lamented death of the Duchess of Teck prevented him from being present , and , in the unforeseen emergency

the Deputy Provincial Grand Master the Very Rev .- E . R . Currie , D . D ., Dean of Battle , P . G . Chaplain , took the chair , being supported by the Provincial Officers , says the ¦ " Sussex Daily News . "

As a prelude to the formal business meeting ,-iihany of the Brethren sat down to a luncheon ; at the Castle Hotel j to which Brethren not belonging to the Mark Degree vweice also invited . The chair was taken by the Deputy Provincial

Grand Master , who was supported by Bro .: C . F . Mfotier Grand Secretary , Bro . Stanley Weston , Mayor : of Hastings , Bro . . Alderman . J . Bray , and a large number of Provincial Officers .

The Chairman opened the toast list by submitting the Queen and Mark Masonry , and H . R . H . the Prince of Wales G . M . M . These toasts were accorded musical honours ; trie solos being rendered by Bro . J . P . Slingsby 'Roberts and Bro . H . Russell ; Bro . J . B . Guy Prov . G . O . presiding at the piano .

Bro . C . F . Matier Grand Secretary , who was cordially received , acknowledged the toast of the Grand Officers . 'He had been personally requested by the Earl of Eustonand Viscount Dungarvan to convey their hearty good wishes to the members of fhe Provincial Grand Lodge of'Sussex .

Speaking on behalf of the Grand Officers ,, he said / their predecessors had done nobly and well , and . the present Officers endeavoured to emulate their good deed ' s . He trusted every blessing would attend the Sussex Provincial Lodge . The Chairman submitted the M . W . Bro . H-R . H . the

Duke of Connaught P . G . M . Provincial G . M . M . The unavoidable absence of the Duke of Connaught was a . great disappointment to . , all present , particularly to those who , for weeks past , _ ad been working on behalf of the ¦ £ hndtion . He truly sympathised with Bro . H . Boyce , their , caterer , in

the great disappointment he had personally , experienced . He desired , on behalf of his Royal Highness -the _ > uke of Connaught , to express to him , and to all who had laboured to make the gathering a success , his cordial thanks , ,. ajid also regret that he was unable to be present- Under , the

circumstances , all the Brethren would realise that in accordance with the etiquette governing the Royal Family , it was absolutely impossible for the Duke to ; be present . Their Provincial Grand Master had not , however , . contented

himself by forwarding a telegram , but had sent Colonel Egerton to personally express his deep regret that , for the second 'time , he had disappointed , the Hastings Brethren . The Duke , he said , had left Bagshot , and it was on reaching London that he heard of the lamented death of ; the Duchess

of Teck . He could not say more to impress upon them > the extreme regret the Duke felt that he was compelled to disappoint the Provincial Grand Lodge and the ancient cinque port of Hastings . The Duke purposed presiding at the Provincial Grand Craft Lodge at Brighton next month ,

and he ( the Chairman ) trusted nothing would prevent ithem from rallying round him on that occasion , and showing < that they still felt towards him the loyalty and devotion whioh were his due , from the great interest he took in Freemasonry in Sussex .

Bro . Stanley Weston ( Mayor of Hastings ) next proposed the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , D . D ., Dean of Battle , P . G . C . Deputy Provincial Grand Master , and the Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge , present and past . Speaking of the disappointment felt at Hastings owing to the absence of the Duke of

Connaught , he said he had learned , from his experience of public life , to meet disappointment in a common sense manner , but he still hoped to see their Provincial Grand Master amongst them on some future occasion . He had

been associated with Bro . Currie for many years , and he knew that whatever he undertook he carried out earnestly , and the remaining Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge also carried out their duties in an able manner .

The Chairman , in responding , said his position was n 6 t an enviable one . They had all been disappointed , but the disappointment was as great to him as to them . They had hoped the day would have been a proud one for Mark Masons in Sussex , and they had all hoped the Duke would have been

present ; and in taking his place , he asked for the kind forbearance of all the Brethren . The Province was flourishing and advancing , and the executive were thankful to the Officers of the various Lodges for their able work and support . The Derwent Lodge , he said , had presented him with a
