ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Adelphi . —The new drama recently produced by Messrs . A . and S . Gatti differs considerably from the class of plays usually associated wifch this theatre . Its aim is higher , and we may say at once that it is an advance from an artistic point of view . Whether the public will appreciate this departure from the traditions of the house remains to bo seen . Messrs . Haddon Chambers and Comyns Carr have each achieved success as dramatists , and from their collaboration something superior might be

expected . " In the days of the Duke " is the somewhat misleading title of the new play , fche prologue of which opens in A . D . 1800 , when Colonel Arthur Wellesley was engaged in battling with the Indian tribes , as our gallant army is doing to-day . In a fort on the hills we find a terrible drama being enacted , Captain Lanson having led astray the wife of his Colonel , and who , in his passionate desire to secure the woman he loves , actually betrays the fort to the enemy in exchange for a large sum . of money and their safe conduct

through the lines . The plot is discovered by Colonel Aylmer , who taxes Lanson with his perfidy , and is thereupon shot by the villain , just as fche fort is relieved . The circumstances are known to an Irish adventurer , O'Hara , who makes ifc appear that the Colonel was the traitor . Fourteen years elapse when the son , now Captain Aylmer , overhears the calumny and devotes his life to restore his father's honour . This , however , is not done until after several exciting episodes , culminating in the Battle of Waterloo ,

wuere Lanson is shot , and dies confessing his crime . Thus it will be seen that " The Duke " has little or nothing to do with the story , which revolves round the person of Captain Lanson , Lawrence Aylmer , and Mr . O'Hara . Of course Mr . William Terriss is in his element as the gallant son defending his father's memory , while the talent of Mr . Charles Cartwright is peculiarly suited to the part of Captain Lanson . Mr . O'Hara finds a fitting representative in Mr . J . D . Beveridge , and the repentant wife is pathetically

pourfcrayed by Miss Marion Terry . Ot fche principal remaining characters Miss Millward may be commended as Dorothy . Lawrence ' s sweetheart ; Mr . Harry Nicholls and Miss Vane Featherston , who provide the comic scenes ; Mr . L . Cautley and Mr . Charles Fulton , whose make-up as the Duke was admirable . The play is splendidly staged , and supervised hy Mr . Fred G . . Latham , while the military uniforms of the period are designed by Mr . Louis Edwards .

Garrick . —Mr . H . T . Brickwell has arranged with Mr . Oscar Barrett to produce at this Theatre , on Boxing Day , Monday , 27 th December , a Fairy Pantomine founded on the evergreen and favourite story Cinderella . National Skating Palace . —Mons . Buatier de Kolta , the Inventor of the Vanishing Lady , Cocoon , Illustration of Silk , & c , & c , will give his latest marvellous illusion , being an ascent and miraculous disappearance in mid-air , for the first time in public , this day ( Saturday ) , at 4 . 30 and 9 . 30 p . m ., and afterwards every evening at 9 . 30 , and Wednesday and Saturday afternoons at 4 . 30 .

HERTFORD COUNTY COLLEGE .

AFTER all , the training of our boys does not depend so much on making them apt scholars , as it does in laying the foundation for a manly future . " Mens sana in corpora sano " is the motto of Bro . Herbert Catford ' s College at New Barnet , and he seems to do everything in his power to carry ' out both the letter and the spirit of his text , believing that pupils who are contented and happy will learn far more than those who may be miserable

and dejected . We were present on Thursday evening at one of the fortnightly Pupils' COD certs which are arranged for the winter , and were thoroughly pleased with the programme provided . Many of the boys did remarkably well , and it does not detract from their claims for notice if we award the palm to fche elder son of Bro . Starke , who simply made fche visitors as well as his fellow scholars roar with his comic songs . The son of Bro . F .

S . Plowright P . M . 193 took part in a well rendered duet , while the college choir and band appeared to great advantage in the vocal waltz " See-Saw . " Bvo . Catford has so many sons of Masons under his care that we should never be surprised to hear of the formation of something in fche form of a •Lodge of Lewises at his establishment , or perhaps in later years they may follow tho example of Bro . C . W . Hudson and his fellow pupils of Brighton Grammar School , and found a " Hertfordian Past and Present Lodge , "
