LODGE OF FRIENDSHIP . No . 278 .
rpiIE rejoicings of the Easter Week worthily commenced her © 1 on 28 th March with a grand Masonic Ball , given by the members of thia Lodge at the Theatre Royal . To say that it waa a success wonld scarcely do justice to the great care and forethonghfc which had been bestowed on all the arrangements , of which the result was most satisfactory . Masonic Balls aeem to have no exception aa to success , though as they ocour in their turn , each one in
some respect excels the last . The one given on Easter Monday will hold a high place on the list , in fact , perhaps the highest , and the pleasant memories of the great trouble taken by the brethren of the Craft on that occasion to so worthily entertain their numerous guests , will not be lost sight of for many a long day . What made
the entertainment particularly noticeable was the care with w _ ica even the minutest details had been thought of and provided for , and the transformation of the interior of the theatre is hardly capable of description—all waa clean , bright , and g littering—blue and white were the prevailing colours , whioh were delightfully blended with emblems of the Craft , the happy introduction of flowersmirrora and evergreens , moat judiciously disposed , adding
, to the general effect , the result being a charming tout ensemble . The stage was for the time transformed into an Oriental Tented Pavilion , beautifully got up . and at the East end a trophy of thronea of the Craft , Mark and Eoyal Arch degrees were erected , while the back , ground ( specially painted by Mr . Caretto , scenic artist ) waa certainly a work of art . Above the dais of the Friendahip Lodge the
words " welcome " in gaa jets was fixed , this , together with couutleas waxlights , illuminated the whole with charming effect , aud was the object of admiration dnring the evening . The entrance , staircases , and boxes were carefully draped and carpeted , and large mirrors liber . Hy placed in suitable position gave light and brightness to tbe whole scene . In the centre of the Theatre directly beneath the large
sunlight , was placed a picturesque rnatic fountain ( designed and fixed by Mr . Stewart , of Gunners ' -lane ) , which waa in full play all the evening , being supplied with perfumed waters from some unseen source , producing a charmingly cool ancl refreshing effect . Mr . Peso , Upholsterer , of Waterport-strpet , had charge of the furnishing department , which left nothing to be desired . -By half-past nine
o'clock the boxes were well filled with a large number of guests , the body of the Theatre being kept clear for the procession . Punctually at the time appointed His Excellency the Governor , with Lady Adye and party , arrived , and were met at the entrance by Broa . Roberts W . M ., Healy S . W ., Bryant J . W ., and conducted to the Royal box by the Honorary Secretary Past Master Brother Cottrell and the
two Deacons Bros . Culatto and W . Thornton . After the strains of the "National Anthem" had died away , "God Bless the Prince of Wales " was played in honour of H . R . H . the Grand Master , when the curtain was raised and the Masonio procession commenced , the brethren in their brightest jewels and regalia appearing in full force which made a dazzling diaplay , aa they advanced in four lines
and then marched round the theatre , ultimately forming two lines facing inwards , culminating in the east with the arch of steel . His Excellency the Governor was conducted through the double line of brethren by the D . D . G . M . Bro . Lieut .-Colonel Gilbard , and welcomed in the name of the brethren by the W . M . Bro . floberta , who presented the D . G . M . Bro . Cornwell as the representative of the Grand
Lodge of England . The lines then broke np , and dancing commenced , which was continued with the greatest spirit till four o ' clock in the morning , to an excellent programme by the band of the 2 nd Batt . Durham Light Infantry ( 106 th ) , ably conducted by Mr . Davis , the band-master . Supper was served at twelve o'clock , in tbe large saloon of the theatre , and it is needless to say it was plentiful and of
the very best , the Caterer being Bro . J . Canovas , tho display and excellence of the viands leaving nothing to bo desired . We have all heard that hospitality and good feeling are Masonic virtue--, this was fully exemplified on this occasion by the courteous attention of the Stewards and Committee . The gueata at thia moat successful and enjoyable Ball numbered nearly three hundred , among them being
His Excellency the Governor , Lady Adyo and party , Maj v-Gen . aud Mrs . Adams , the Chief Justice , Lady Buiford-Hancock and party , Captain Hon . Fremantle and Mrs . Fremantle and party , Lord and Lady Gilford , Surgeon General Smith , C . B ., R . E ., aud party , Colonel and Mrs . Markham , Mr . Sheriff , Mr . and Mrs . Cornwell , Colonel Gilbard , Mr . Melfort Campbell , the D . O ., General and Mrs . Heal y , and the elite of tho city and garrison . The arrangements , which we
have hnd much pleasure in so deservedly praising , were carried out by an excellent Committee composed as follows : —Bros . Roberts W . M , President , P . M . Coltrell Hon . Secretary , Speed Treasurer , Healy S . W ., Bryant J . W ., T . J . Haynes , Gomez , J . H . Haynes , Henry , Culatto , and Dobranich , to whom every credit is due for tho admirable Arrangements which prevailed throughout , and made the ball such an unqualified success . — Gibraltar Caron . de .
At the last regular meeting of tbe St . John of Wapping Lodge , No . 1306 , held at the Moorgate Tavern , Moorgate Street , E . C , Bro . T . J . T yer was elected W . M . for the ensuing year . The Lodge has since adopted a new name , and will henceforth bo known as the Lodge of Sfc . John ,
1306 . In addition , the Lodge has removed to more commodious premises , viz ., the Cit y Arms Tavern , St . Mary Axe , where the installation ceremony will take place ou the 11 th inst . We trust these changes may pave the way for a prosperous future for the Lod ge .
