THE annual meeting was held on Monday , at Anderton s Hotel , Fleet-street . Lodgo was opened at three o'clock by Bro . Henry Cross was elected a joining member , and then Bro . William James Fortescue
was raised to the sublimo degree , and Bros . George J . Picking and William Hopkins wero passed . Both ceremonies were performed by the I . P . M ., Bro . J . R . Taylor . Lodge was then called off , and after a brief interval , tbe W . M . elect , Bro . Tbomns MnTkland , was presented to Bro . Past Master J . R . Taylor , who had kindly undertaken the duties of Installing Officer . The obligation was duly administered ,
the brethren below the rank of I . M . retired , a Board of Masters was opened , and the ceremony proceeded . On the re-admission of the brethren , the new W . M . was sainted in tho threo degrees , and the following were appointed Officers for the ensuing twelve months : — H . Cox S . W ., W . G . Cole J . W ., J . G . Unite P . M . Taylor , who fully realised all that had been expected of him . We may here say these expectations were of a high standard , and based npon what had been evidenced as to ability by his efforts in the earlier part of the days' proceedings . A proposition
for a rejoining member was submitted to the Lodge for next meeting , and the resignation of a brother tendered , and accepted , with regret . Hearty good wishes were submitted and Lodge was closed . The proprietors of this well-known hotel supplied a most enjoyable banquet , Bro . Arthur Clemow personally superintending the service . On removal of the cloth , Grace—For these and all Thy mercies—was
sung , and the W . M ., Bro . Markland , gavo fche Loyal toasts . Bro . Barham , in brief but expressive terms , proposed the health of the W . M . Bro . Markland had only just been installed , but the members had every confidence in his ability to rule the Lodge , which doubtless during his year wonld continue its career of prosperity , while the happy feeling of sympathy amongst its members would , if
possible , be extended . After a song by Bro . H . Cross— " Hearts of Oak "came Bro . Millbank's reply . He was much gratified at the way in which the toast had been received . He conld bnt feel flattered at the unanimous manner in which he had been elected to the highest position in the Lodge . The way in which he had been received that evening was intensely gratifying . He wonld do all he could to advance
the interests of the members . Short speeches were the order of the evening , and , under the circumstances , he would conclude by again heartily thanking the brethren , one and all , for the reception they had given him . Here Brother Heney favoured with a song , For the Visitors , Bros . Poore aud Lilley replied . In replying to the toast of the Installing Master , Bro . Taylor , after acknowledging tbe
cordial remarks of the W . M . in introducing the toast , felt he had only done bis duty ; if the brethren were satisfied with his exertions , be was amply repaid for any trouble he had been at . A Past Master's jewel was presented to the outgoing Master , who gracefully acknowledged the compliment , at tbe same time he recognised his many
shortcomings , which the brethren had graciously overlooked . The other toasts enstomary on these occasions were done full honour to , and able replies were elicited . Bro . T . Poore gave a popular selection from the works of Dickens . There were several other recitals , and the harmony of the evening was well sustained ; in this regard Bros . H . Mann , A . Millward , Picket , and Chapman , especially deserve praise .

Pattie Laverno singing the solo verses . This having received a most pnt-insiastic reception , the toasts of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales M . W . G . M . ; the Earl of Carnarvon Pro G . M . ; the Earl of Lathom D . G . M ., and the rest of the Graud Officers of the Grand Lodge of England followed in qiick succession . Bro . E . P . Albert P . G . P . responded for the G . Offi * ers . The W . M . next proposed the toast of the
Renevolent Fund , coupled with the name of Bro . L . Alexander Past President . Miss Laverno sang the " Surprise , " and was deserved ly applauded . Bro . L . Alexaudev P . M ., in responding to tbe toast , said ho was pleased to inform those present that the newly-initiated brethren had each given tho sum of 21 s . The W . M . proposed the toast of tho Initiates . Broa . Lorie and Davis ; one he had known fo . *
many years , and tbo other , by the recommendations he had brought , wonld doubtless become a credit to the Order . In order to save time , with this toast be would associate the namo of Bro . Levy , their newl y eleoted joining mnmber . Bro . L . Davis was the first to reply , and he wns followed by Bro . Lovie , who said the solemnity of the proceedings had so impressed him that he could scarcely find words to speak . It
had long been bis earnest desire to become a Freemason , and he had now accomplished his wish . To speak metaphorically , he might say be had stepped on the first rung of the ladder , and he trusted he might be able to ascend to the top . The joining member also spoke , and thanked tho brethren for their recep tion of the toast . Bro . R . Baker I . P . M . then rose ; he had only to mention the name of the W . M . and
he knew how the toast would be received . They had seen how ex . cellently Bro . Myers had performed tho ceremonies , and how firml y ho upheld the dignity of the Lodge , while as a president he was second to none . The members would regret when bis year of office was over . No better man or Mason exists . The W . M . thanked Bro . Baker for speaking of him in such glowing terms . If he had given
them satisfaction , it was most pleasant to receive their approval . The other toasts comprised the Visitors , responded to by Bros . Marks , Baker , Brown and Fletcher . The brethren gave a hearty welcome to Miss Pattie Laverne , who is an old favourite with the members of tbe Joppa . Her rendering of Brother Van Noorden ' s "Yet , " deserves special praise .

called off and on . Bro . H . Opperman , of the Kingsland Lodge , No . 1693 , was elected a member . Bro . Galer was elected W . M . for the next meeting , when Lodge was closed and adjourned . Bro . Oliver , on Ancient Masonic Rituals , on the second Saturday in October , on which occasion we trust he will have a numerous attendance of brethren .

P . M . P . G . Steward , and a full muster of members of the Lodge . The occasion was invested with special interest by the presence of W . Bro . W . Masefield Grand Standard Bearer P . D . P . G . M . Worcestershire , who is a native of Newport , and an honorary member of tbis Lodge . During the recess au address of congratulation , Bigned by all the members of the Lodge , was presented to Bro . Masefield . This
wns now ordered to be entered on the minutes , and Bro . Masefield suitably acknowledged the compliment . At the close of ^ business , the brethren adjourned to a banquet , provided by Bro . Bird , which , by a singular coincidence , was held in the house where the venerable guest of tho evening was born , eighty-two years ago-The building has , ifc is scarcely necessary to add , undergone varions changes , both of business and of form , during the period that & a 3 took
elapsed . The W . M . in proposing the Officers of Grand Lodge , occasion to remark the probably unique circumstances under which Bro . Masefield was present , and expressed the gratification of all tbe members of tbe Lodge afc tbe honour reflected on ifc by having on if roll , and present with them , a native of the town , whoso Masonic career had commanded such deep and general respect , and on w booi Grand Lodge honours bad been so well and worthily bestowed . During the recess au address of congratulation , Bigned by all the members of the Lodge , was presented to Bro . Masefield . This
wns now ordered to be entered on the minutes , and Bro . Masefield suitably acknowledged the compliment . At the close of ^ business , the brethren adjourned to a banquet , provided by Bro . Bird , which , by a singular coincidence , was held in the house where the venerable guest of tho evening was born , eighty-two years ago-The building has , ifc is scarcely necessary to add , undergone varions changes , both of business and of form , during the period that & a 3 took
elapsed . The W . M . in proposing the Officers of Grand Lodge , occasion to remark the probably unique circumstances under which Bro . Masefield was present , and expressed the gratification of all tbe members of tbe Lodge afc tbe honour reflected on ifc by having on if roll , and present with them , a native of the town , whoso Masonic career had commanded such deep and general respect , and on w booi Grand Lodge honours bad been so well and worthily bestowed .
