toast of G . Lodge , laid stress on the value of Masonry , as tending to make men more charitable in their dealings with one another , since in the Lodge they laid aside all religions and political questions , and met on a common platform . He looked upon the spread of Masonry

PRESENTATION IN DURHAM .

ON Thursday , 30 th ult ., au interesting ceremony took placo at the residence of Bro . J . Fawcett , J . P ., the occasion being the presentation of a beautifully illuminate ! address to that gentlemam on his relinquishing tho office of Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Durham , a position which ho had held for upwards of thirty-two years . Tho brethren deputed to make the presentation on behalf of

Rev , J . Cundill P . G . Treasurer , was called upon by Bro . J . Wood to make the presentation , and in doing so referred to the excellent services rendered to Freemasonry by Bro . Fawcett , and to the proud position held by the Province of Durham in Masonic circles . Bro .

Fawcett , in accepting tho address , said it was with feelings of great regret that he had to relinquish the office of Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Durham , and was gratified to find that his efforts in connection with Freemasonry had met with approval , whioh was shown in the presentation of their very handsome address . The address , which is a magnificent specimen of art , was executed by Messrs . Marcus Ward and Co . of London . It was enclosed in a beautifully-carved massive oak frame , and is as follows : —

" To the Right Worshipful Bro . John Fawcett , J . P ., Past Provincial Grand Master and Past Provincial Grqral Superintendent of the Province ofDurhoM . " We , the Freemasons of the Province of Durham , on the occasion of your resigning the office of Provincial Grand Master , held by you for upwards of thirty-two years , respectfully beg you to accept this

expression of our unfeigned regret and gratitude—of our regret for the loss of your valuable services ; of our gratitude for the marked manner in which your lengthened and able administration haa advanced and adorned oor Order . The calm and wise judgment , gentlemanly courtesy , untiring and able energy , and unvarying impartiality and firmness exhibited by you in the discharge of your

high and responsible office , deserve our warm thanks , and claim and have obtained our high admiration . We feel that the proud and in . fiuential position this Province now deservedly holds in the esteem of the Freemasons of England , a position far higher than any . hitherto obtained by it , is in a great measure owing to you . That the Great Architect of the Universe may daring your remaining years see fit to grant you all peace and happiness is our earnest prayer . "

Besides the above inscription , the address was surmounted by Bro . Fawcett ' s coat of arms , and contains his portrait , a full list of the Lodges in the Province , with the date of creation , their Masters and Officers for the year , the names of each Chapter , and their Principals . After the toast of the Past Provincial Grand Master the brethren retired .
