Christmas Entertainment, Boys' School.

CHRISTMAS ENTERTAINMENT , BOYS' SCHOOL .

rpHE annual entertainment which is given at this festive season to J- the pnpils of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys who remain at school during the holidays took place on Wednesday evening . There was a numerous gathering of visitors , especially if we take into account that the customary entertainment to the Old Folks at Croydon was fixed for the same evening . Among those present were Bro . Binckes , Secretary of the Institution , and the Misses Binckes ; Bro .

Dr . Morris , Head Master , Bro . 0 . F . Matier and Mrs . Matier , Bro . E . C . Woodward and Mrs . Woodward , Bro . M > ijor Hawkins , Bro . W . W . Morgan , & a ., & o . The programme was a most entertaining one , and was furnished entirely by Bro . Seymour Smith , whose efforts were duly appreciated , not only by the youngsters for whose especial behoof they were exerted , but likewise by the rest of the

audience . Ihe programme was of a most humorous descrip . tion throughout . It was entitled , " Sea Side Jottings , " waa in two Parts , and included some of Bro . Seymour Smith ' s best songs . The opening of Part I . was descriptive of a Bachelor ' s Paradise , after which the hero , Theophilus , heroically determines upon under * taking a journey , and is fortunate in catching his train , to the

accompaniment of a merry song , " Just in Time . " Once seated in a carriage he gives himself up to moralising on people and things in general and his fellow passengers in particular , whom we are to suppose he entertains by the way with a pretty ballad , "I love my love so dearly . " The example thus set by Theophilus is contagious , and a venerable spinster expresses her ideas on the " Girl of the Period . "

After an amnsing sketch of " The Happy Family , the Melancholy Man causes no little amusement by misquoting a proverb , and follows this exploit up by proving the falsity of the old adage , " out of sight , out of mind . " A humorous song , "Bill Craven , " having been given with great effect , the train reaches "Mnddleme Junction , "

where it seems birds of a feather do not always flock together . The Gnard then gives his ideas , and after another sketch , in whioh is described " The Railway Station , " we are supposed to be at Shinglesea , and make acquaintance with its most prominent characteristics and inhabitants . A patriotic song , " The Tight Little Island , " conclndes Part I .

In Part II . are sketched the adventures of Theophilus , showing how , having been * hooked by a fisherman , ho escapes the sailor , and is then caught by the Tar . A fit of bad punning supervenes , but in due course , be meets the Volunteers , whose gallant captain indulges in so mild a flirtation that Bro . Smith feels under the necessity of contrasting it in song with that of " The Irish Captain . " A variety

of other adventures , in tbe course of which Theophilus , having shown an utter disregard for morals , astonishes his landlady , and is in turn astonished by the Jolly Man , our hero emerges from a conglomeration of misfortunes just in time to encounter Mrs . Brown , A description of her famous Dinner Party forms the climax to the

woes of Theophilus . He resolves on an immediate flight , and having returned to the Metropolis , seeks consolation for all his troubles and difficulties at the Opera , of his visit to which he gives a description . This brings the entertainment to a close . Those who have had the privilege of hearing Bro . Smith will havo no difficulty in picturing to themselves the varied fan and frolic his entertainment contained .

rpHE annual entertainment which is given at this festive season to J- the pnpils of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys who remain at school during the holidays took place on Wednesday evening .
