known as the " Scottish Freemasons' Benevolent Society in India , " for the relief of destitute Freemasons , their widows , and the education of their orphan children . But these semi-public charities afford only an indication of the good work that is always being constantly

though secretly , performed . It would be probably impossible to arrive at even an approximate number of Freemasons in India . But tho twelve Lodges in Bombay city have 400 subscribing members - , while it is believed that about ten times that number have passed through the

Lodges at various times , and are still more or less interested in Freemasonry . This gives us 4000 Freemasons in Bombay ; and if the same ratio holds good throughout India , we shall in the 110 Lodges have 3 , 737 subscribing members , and a total of 37 , 370 Freemasons . But this is ,

of course , a very rough surmise . Still , considering the amount of good they do , and considering also that no charge of disloyalty or irreligion , has ever been brought against this small but influential body of men , it is difficult to see why they were signalled out for attack by Bishop Meurin in his now famous pastoral . —Times of India .
