Our Brother Is Dead.
of the Temple . Ho walked with us , and met with us , in all of the degrees of the Masonic Fraternity . He was by no means the only President of the United States that adorned the Craft- —George Washington , Andrew Jackson , James K . Polk , John Tyler , Franklin Pierce , James
Bnr-hnnan , and Andrew Johnson , were also Freemasons ; but President . Garfie ^ l was as pure a man as the pu rest of them , and will stand beside them in Masonic history as a shining example and illustration of the purityand nobility of Freemasonry . He sought the Craft of his own free will ; he
advanced through all of its grades , approving and endorsing the > m as he proceeded ; and belaid down his life while in active membership in Lodge , Chapter , Commandery and Consistory , He knew Masonry through and through ; he vouched for it with all of his mind and heart ; and he died
a brother beloved . There is no honour the Craft can pay to his memory that it will not gladly pay . While he was living his last days , and journeying through the valley of the shadow of death , it testified again and again , by resolutions of sincere sympathy for himself and his noble
wife , the feeling that everywhere permeates the Brotherhood , and now that he is dead , it will pay the last sad tribute of fraternal respect to his memory . The bereaved widow and children of our late Brother have no sincerer friends than Freemasons in this country . The
American nation mourns the loss of its most conspicuous and powerful citizen and ruler ; but MASONRY ABOUND THE GLOBE MOURNS THE DEATH OF BROTHER JAMES A . GARFIELD . His pure life availed not to save him ; a people ' s prayers are answered not as they wished—nevertheless we bow in
humble submission to the Divine decree , convinced that the Grand Master of the Universe hath done , and will do , all things well . The nation has been unified , and realizes , as it never did before , the brotherhood of man . The
Masonic Brotherhood , and the nation ' s brotherhood have mingled their prayers , and now mingle their tears . May it be ours to receive " the oil of joy for mourning , the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness . "
