Canynges Lodge, No. 1388, Bristol.
Bro . " Burnett . Before wo drink this toast , I havo a very pleasing duty to perform , in handing to our worthy Deputy Prov . G . M . this Past Master ' s jewel , with a request that ho may decorate our I . P . M . with it . Tho V . W . Brother , in receiving tho jewel , said , I am called upon to perform a very pleasing duty . Bro . Burnett , I have presented jewels to many brethren , but I have never done so with
greator pleasuro than I do on this occasion , and allow mo to state , in placing this jewel whero I do , I trust you will havo long and happy years to wear if , that I have never heard a namo spoken of in Masonry with more prniso than your own . Bro . Burnett iu reply , said , W . Master and brethren , I kindly thank you for tho mark of esteem yon havo shown me , and am very grateful to tho V . W . Bro . for tho
manner in which ho has spoken of mo . I feel that I am gveatly indebted to tho brethren for their past indulgences . I have ondeavoured to do my duty for the past twelvo months , and any shortcomings must not be attributed to a lack of lovo for tho Order or interest in the welfaro of the Lodge . At this stage of tho evening a very interesting duty devolved upon Bro . Kent , who approached the W . M ., and
said : Wo aro pleased to hear tho kind remarks of our I . P . M ., and tho encouraging words spoken by our V . W . D . P . G . M . must bo acceptable to ns all . We think , while looking at tho prosperity of tho Canynges Lodge , that wo are greatly indebted to Bro . Wills , as the founder , and with whom first originated tho conception of establishing this Lodgo . Feeling the great boon that has boon conferred upon
so many brethren by its formation , wo have , as a small tribute and mark of our respect , taken this occasion for showing it , by rospectfnlly requesting our Y . W . Deputy to invest Bro . Wills with this P . M . ' s jewel . The jewel was then hauded to V . W . Bro . Pavel ; and Bro . Williams rose to support the statements of Bro . Kent and endorse them , by saying : I feel it a dnty to-night which I owe to the Craft
to say that I have known Bro . Wills , in daily intercourse and Masonically , for a long timo , and I know the mark of respect shown him to-night is only hi 3 just due . I had the honour of being tho first Master of this Lodge , and 1 know how deep a debt of gratitude wo owe to Worshipful Bro . Wills for establishing it ; for yon must boar in mind with him originated tho first idea of its
formation , and were it not for him thero would be no Canynges Lodge this day . Therefore , I say , let him who won tho honours wear them . It was intended to present a proper address to Bro . Wills on this occasion , * but we are uuable to do so through some unforeseen circumstances . From the deep interest Bro . Wills has taken
in tho Canynges Lodge since its foundation , and his continued active participation in promoting its welfare at all times , I hope the insorip tionf which tho jewel bears will be a lasting testimony of the appreciation which tho brethren here at this moment entertain of his services . Tho Y . W . D . P . G . Master then decorated Bro . Wills with
an elegant P . M . s jewel , and in doing so expressed a hearty wish that he might live long to wear it , a sentiment which was loudly applauded . Bro . Wills , on rising to respond , was warmly cheered , he said : I have often heard brethren express surprise on finding themselves in something like my position to-night , but no greater surprise could await mo than this presentation . I assure you I was in
completo ignoranco of it until I entered this Lodge to-night . I feel greatly indebted to tho brethren for their past and present token of respect , and to tho V . W . Brother for the kind sentiments he has expressed . As to the position which I havo taken in tho Canynges Lodge , I have undertaken it as a past and present duty , aud pleasure to promote its interests , knowing by its formation we havo seenred
privileges to onr travelling brethren which they never could otherwise enjoy . It is pleasing and encouraging to see such good men occupy and pass the chair as wo have seen this day . ( Cheers ) . W . Bro . Williams , in proposing the Visitors , remarked that tho toast which had fallen to his lot to propose was one always heartily received in tho Canynges Lodge , and especially w uld it be so to-night , as there wero so many distinguished brethren present . Wo had the
always welcome Bro . the Deputy Prov . G . M . for Monmouthshire , whoso presence that evening was so edifying and complimentary to us . We have also a distinguished brother from London , who was the representative of tho FREEMASON ' CHRONICLE , who had come expressly to witness our installation , ami \ o glean information as to our working . The FREEMASON ' S CIIUONICT . E , as a Masonic journal , is an invaluable medium iu conveying information of n most interesting naturo to all parts , and recording what transpires in our Order
Canynges Lodge, No. 1388, Bristol.
As the brethren in one Province cannot know much of the proceedings at a distance , it must bo apparent that Masonic journal i 3 m , conducted on proper principles , must bo very valuable to the Craft . V . W . Bro . Homfray replied on behalf of tho Visitors , in his usual happy strain , and Bro . Davies replied on behalf of tho FREEMASON ' CHRONICLE . W . Bro . Worlock Prov . G . S ., iu proposing the
health of the W . Masters of tho Province , said it was not an easy matter to fill the office of Master of a Lodge . Each brother in assuming that oflico felt that tho welfaro of his Lodgo depended , to a great cxtont , on him , and npou his being properly qualified to fill that otfico depended the efficiency and regularity of tho working in the Order . Tho toast was duly honoured and responded to by W .
Bro . Trull , on behalf of tho Clarence , W . Bro . Pearson for the Beaufort , W . Bro . Morgan on behalf of tho lloyal Sussex , Bro . G . 0 . Harris Treas . Moira , W . Bro . Hooper Jerusalem , and W . Bro . Notris St . Vincent . W . Bro . Wills proposed tho Officers of the Canynges Lodge , which was followed by tho Masonio Cliarities , from I . P . M .
Burnett , coupling with it tho name of W . Bro . Bowdou , who , on rising to respond to tho toast , said : It is with great pleasuro that I avail myself of this moment to inform you that I havo beon enabled to present a sum of £ 150 . We cannot do better than work hard for the Masonic Charities , and wo must work hard ourselves as well as try to procure the co-operation of our sister Provinces , to aid ns iu
carrying onr candidates through . I never rose with a heavier heart than I do to-night , for since I arrived in this room I havo received a most disheartening telegram , rolativo to a bank failure in London , where our Masonic Charity funds are deposited . According to this telegram , the loss will bo near . C 1 , 000 , but wo may still hopo for better news . I bog to return yon my best thanks for the manner
you have received tho toast . W . Bro . Wills , in proposing success to the Lodge of Instruction , pointed out its many advantages , as a course of tuition in Masonry , must bo highly beneficial to all who wero desirous of learning . Ho trusted tho brethren would drink tho toast with all cordiality , and couple with it tho namo of tho zealous and indofatigablo W . Bro . Compton . Bro . Comptou
appropriately replied , and exhorted the Past Mastei-3 , Mastorsand brothren to attend as often as possible , and participate in the duties of and benefits accruing from tho Lodgo of Instruction . Tho W . Master , in bringing the proceedings to a close , proposed tho health of tho Musical Brethren , adding thereto the namo of tho genial and talented
Bro . Lawson , who replied in a very fitting manner , and thus was concluded ono of the most pleasant evenings that it has been onr good fortune to pass . The enjoyment of the evening was very greatly enhanced by tho excellent musical qualities of Bros . Biggs , Sulley , Worlock , Gore , Norris , and tho instrumental musio of Bro . Lawson .
