tho Lodge as Steward for the E . M . B . Institution . The widow of a deceased brother was relieved with the sum of two guineas . Seven propositions for initiation were handed in , and it was intimated that a Lodge of Emergency would be held previous to the installation meeting . Bro . S . Hickman P . M . proposed that a sum of five guineas be voted from the Lodge , to form a nucleus for the purpose of

presenting the W . M . with a suitable testimonial on his retiring from office . The following notice of motion was given by Bro . M . Spiegel S . D . : — " That the Lodge of Joppa co-operate with other Lodges to petition Grand Lodge respecting the non-admission of members of tho Hebrew Faith in Lodges in Germany . The Lodge was then closed , and the brethren partook of slight refreshments . Tho W . M .

proposed the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts , Bro . E . P . Albert replied for the Grand officers . The toast of" The W . M . elect " was received with applause , tho W . M . saying that the members could not have made a better selection . Bro . L . Lazarus briefly and appropriately returned thanks . Bro . L . Alexander P . M ., President of the Benevolent Fund , responded to that toast , and informed tho brethren

the sum had nearly reached £ 1 , 200 . When tho necessities of a brother required aid , it was given liberally , and in some cases £ 100 had been given j this had enabled many brethren to resume their positions . discharged the duties of his office . Bro . J . E . Walford P . M . 177 , CO ., returned thanks for the visitors in a very excellent speech . Tho toasts of " The Wardens , " "Junior Officers , " and "The Tyler " concluded a very enjoyable evening , the W . M ., Bros . Benjamin , Baum , Clark , and Myers contributed some very excellent harmony .

Confidence Lodge of Instruction , No . 193 . —This Lodge met on Wednesday the 6 th inst ., at Masons' Hall Tavern , Masons ' Avenue , Coleman-street , E . C . Bro . Tollis in the chair . Bros . Croaker S . W ., Walker J . W ., Abell as Sec , John Constable P . M . Treas ., Fenner S . D ., Staley J . D ., Lay I . G ,, E . Gottheil P . M . Preceptor , & c . Tho first ceremony was very ably rehearsed by

Bro . Tollis , after which three of the sections were worked . This being his first attempt to work a ceremony , a cordial voto of thanks to the W . M . was proposed , and unanimously carried . Six visitors were present , four of whom were enrolled members of tho Lodge . Before the closing of the Lodge , Bro . Constable said : Brethren , You are all aware of the absence of our respected Secretary ,

Bro . J . K . Pitt . The reason of his non-appearance is that , in the bosom of his family , he is this day celebrating his fiftieth anniversary . I am sure you will all join with mo in wishing him every happiness , and many years of life to enjoy such ; and , as an expression of our fraternal feeling towards him , I beg to propose that a vote of congratulation be recorded on onr minutes , which will also mark the

high esteem in which he is hold by this Lodge . Tho proposition was seconded by Bro . I . P . Cohen , who concurred in all that had fallen from the proposer . The motion was carried with great applause . It was announced that the second of the series of Lectures would bo given on the 20 th inst . Bro . F . Croaker will occupy the chair next Wednesday .

York Lodge , No . 236 . —At the regular meeting of this Lodge , held on Monday , 4 th Dec , Bro . Wm . Cowling P . M . was elected to the chair of the Lodge for the coming year—being the centenary year of the Lodge . Bro . Wm . Lawton P . M . was at tho same timo oloctcd to the post of Treasurer . M'Oliver , and W . Findley Croupiers . After full justice had been done to tho catering of Bro . Leary , the brethren adjourned across the road to their own hall , whore Bro . Munro proceeded to open his

that effect that tho musical department of No . 360 is celebrated for . After tho "Prince of Wales and the rest of the Royal Family , " Bro . Grunow sang " God Bless tho Prince of Wales . " The three Grand Lodges wero next honoured . P . M . J . Brodio then gave the "Provincial Grand Lodgo of Glasgow , " highly eulogising the work they had done , and the example they had set to

the other provinces in Scotland . Bro . Barrow D . P . G . M ., in tho course of a lengthy reply , said ho was glad to find their labours acknowledged in so influential a Lod ge as tho Commercial . He had known that Lodgo in its young days . It was nearly twenty years since he first visited them , on thoir taking a hall in Croy-place , since which time ho had been an honorary member , Bro . Davidson , then P . M .,

had filled tho office of P . G . J . W . and S . W ., and he was glad to know that their I . P . M ., Dr . Martin , had just been appointed as P . G . J . W . During the twenty years that ho had himself boon connected with their Prov . G . L ., thoir labours had not been light . They found Free , masonry at a very low ebb , holding its meetings in public-houses , perhaps because in those days it was not easy to get good halls . Now

ho was glad to say there waa not a Lodgo in the province that met in a public house . Still their labours were not light ; the numbers of tho Lodges to superintend had doubled , aud , owing to the continued illness of their respected Provincial Master , the greater part of the work devolved on him . The work called , not only for a deal of energy , but also for a deal of patience and forbearance ; but he waa

glad to say that thoy had never had a single case of dispute between the Lodgo Commercial and any of its members to settle . The change was a marked one . This Lod ge had a hall of its own , whore wo are now assembled ; it was a perfect little gem in its way , and good surroundings help to make good members . By tho help of this Lodge and others like it the tone of Masonry , not only in the Province , but

throughout Scotland , had been elevated . ( Cheers ) . Bro . Barrow again rose , to propose Prosperity to Lodgo Commercial , and her Master , paying to the Lodgo and the Master some well merited compliments . Bro . Munro expressed the pleasure he felt , not only in presiding on this occasion , but also at receiving such encomiums from so distinguished and experienced a Mason as Bro . Barrow , who , without doubthad

, done more to elevate Masonry than any other brother in tho Province , and ho might add even in all Scotland , for the Craft at large had taken an example from tho P . G . L . of Glasgow . To-night they were celebrating an epoch in their history ; they had existed for a quarter of a century , and though he was tempted to enlarge ou such a theme , as they had Past Masters present who were at the

formation of the Lodgo he would leave that pleasant duty to them . Bro . D . Lamb then proposed the P . M . ' s of the Lodge . Bro . J . Davidson , one of the founders , who had filled tho chair from 1855 to 1858 , and again for tho years 1868 and 1869 then gave a lengthy , but interesting history of the Lodge from its formation to the present time . Like a good many of the brethren , it had seen its ups and downs ; when ho

took to tho chair it had been closed for two years , its whole possessions were its charter , tho Bible , twenty . four aprons and tho gavels ; now they had opened a Hall of their own . ( Cheers ) . Bro . Brodie gave tho Wardens and other Officers . Bro . J . M . Oliver replied , saying tho officers had been praised for their efficiency , but with such a Master and the aid of tho P . M . ' s it would bo a sh ' amo if they

were not proficient . P . M . McKenzie garo the Visitors . Bro . MaAlister , Greenock , St . John , responded ; ho had at different times filled tho chair for 8 years , and he was glad , from his experience , to testify to tho good working of No . 360 , and also the able way in which the P . G . L . was conducted ; the Grand Lodge should see that other provinces did their duty . When he proposed to take a Hall in Greenock

ho was told he would rain the Lodgo j what was tho result ? they had now above £ 700 worth of property , and during the past seven years thoy had given away no less a sum than £ 470 . Ho hoped they would send a deputation to see them in Greonock , on next St . John ' s Day ; ho would ensure them a cordial welcome . Bro . J . Colquhoun S . M ., iu a truly eloquent speech proposed tho Press . Thoy wero favoured to .

night with four representatives , but ho would ask Bro . Wheeler of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE to reply . Bro . Wheeler acknowledged tho toast , on behalf of himself and brethren . Bro . Dr . Martin I . P . M ., P . G . J . W . said , after a long illness , he had ventured out , as ho could not resist tho temptation of being present to assist in their 25 th

Anniversary ; he proposed thanks to tho musical brethren , especially Bros . Pentland , Peters , Kay , Greenlees , Lamb , Herron and E . Brodie . Bro . Pentland briefly replied , in a speech ,- Bro . Brodio with a song . The Master then gave " Happy to meet , sorry to part , but happy to meet again ; " and after tho company had sung Auld Lang Syne , thoy departed , wishing prosperity to Commercial , No . 360 .
