For it frequently happens that yon must either hold yonr tongue altogether respecting the working in the Lodge or indulge in a system of flattery which has

no foundation in truth . In this instance , however , it is gratifying to be able , conscientiously , to give praise for the smoothness and ability with which the work wasdono , especially when it is considered that th « officers labour under the disadvantage of having no Lodges of Instruction in which to rehearse and practice , for it is well understood ,

that although a ritual may be possessed in manuscript or print , still without practice no one can hope to work efficiently . It is , therefore , highly creditable to the W . M . and officers that the business was carried out so well . Regarding the hospitality , nothing could havo been more satisfactory . He ( Bro . Gottheil ) has always held that a plain

repast is very much to be preferred , and for many very sound reasons , to the elaborate banquets which include costly wines , and which bring in their wake sleeplessness , discomfort and indigestion . Bros . Cottebrune , Mann , Dawson and Mortlock , responded for the Past Masters . Bros Dr . Shiemann , Henley , Mander and Mortlock sang , and Mortlock and Hurley whistled their famous duet .

Kent Lodge of Instruction , No . 15 . —This Lodge held its weekly meeting on Thursday , the 12 th of April , at Bro . Hallows ' , The Chequers , Marsh-street , Walthamstow . Present—Bros . Groome W . M ., W . G . Hallows S . W ., F . Hallows J . W ., Saunders Secretary , Franklin S . D ., Bell J . D ., Upward Organist , Oldroyd I . G ., Pinder Preceptor ; also Bros . Field , Badkin , E . Trebeck and Clark . Tho Lodge was opened in due form , and tho minutes of the last meeting

confirmed . The Lodge was opened in the second degree , and the ceremony of passing was rehearsed , Bro . Saunders acting as candidate . The first section of the lecture was worked by Bro . Pinder , assisted by the brethren . The Lodge was closed in the second degree . Bro . W . G . Hallows worked the first section of the lecture , and Bro . Pinder the second and third sections , assisted by tho brethren . Bro . W . G . Hallows was elected W . M . for the ensuing week . Tho Lodge was then closed in due form .

Strong Man Lodge of Instruction , No . 45 . —Held at the Old Rodney's Head , 12 Old-street , Goswell-road , on Monday , the 9 th inst . Present—Bros . Isaac W . M ., Stock S . W ., Millward J . W ., Brasted S . D ., Powell J . D ., Tolmie Acting Preceptor , Fenner Secretary , R . Pearcy I . G ., Ross , Weedon and Killick . Lodge was opened in due form , and minutes read and confirmed , after which the Lodge was opened

in 2 nd degree . The VV . M . worked the first section of tho lecture , assisted by the brethren . The Lodge was then resumed to 1 st degree . Bro . Ross answered the usual questions and was entrusted . Lodge was again resumed to the 2 nd degree , when tbe ceremony of passing was very ably rehearsed by the W . M ., Bro . Ross acting as

candidate ; the W . M . worked tho 2 nd , Bro . Saul the 3 rd , and Bro . Tolmie the 4 th and 5 th sections of the Lecture , assisted by the brethren . Lodge was resumed to tho 1 st degree , when Bro . Brasted of the Duke of Connaught Lodge , 1524 , and Bro . Ross of Salisbury Lodge 435 , were duly elected members . Bro . Stock was chosen W . M . for the ensuing week . Lodge was then closed , and adjourned .

Fortitude Lodge of Mark Masters , No . 66 , Plymouth . —The annual meeting of this Lodge was held at the Hnyshe Masonic Temple on Monday , the 2 nd inst ., when , after confirmation of the minutes , tho W . Brother John Jackson Avery P . P . G . R .

was duly installed . The ceremony was most efficiently and impressively performed by Bro . Charles Godtsohalk , in the presence of a large board of Installed Masters . He regretted much that his distant residence wonld prevent his being with them so much as he desired , but having regard to the status in the order of his officers he was confident the Lodgo would not suffer shonld he be at any time unavoidably absent . The brethren having spent a short time in social chat , separated , highly gratified with the proceedings .

The Chapter was closed until December , aud the Companions , 39 in number , sat down to a very sumptuous banquet , provided by Bro . Dawkins . Comp . J . Boyd P . Z . said he regretted he had not the time to eulogize the M . E . Z . He

could say he was a good worker in Craft and Royal Arch Masonry , he is ono whom to know is to respect , and he hoped all would cordially drink his health . The M . E . Z ., in reply , thanked Comp . Boyd for his kind expressions , and his rnnltnm in parvo remarks . The M . E . Z . then proposed the toast of tho newly-exalted Companions . Comp . Baugh was one whom he had been acquainted with for many

years . Comp . Do Leliva , in a very excellent speech , thanked the M . E . Z . for the perfect and impressive manner ho had exalted him . The cersmony was so ably rendered by the other two Companions , that it would never be effaced from his memory . Comp . Waugh briefly responded . The M . E . Z . then proposed the health of the Visitors . Comp . H . M . Levy returned thanks for the toast , and

complimented the Z . on his excellent working , also for tho manner he had discharged the duties of the 2 . chair ; he regretted there was not time for Bro . Boyd to give the lecture which ho considered was a great Masonic treat . Comp . J . Boyd said he took a great interest in the welfare of the Chapter ; he , as well as all tho Past Principals , endeavoured to make it one of the best in Masonry ; they had electee

Companions to fill tho chair who conld work well , and his ardent wish was to further the interest of the Chapter . Tho toast of the H . and J . was then proposed . Comp . E . Moody as M . E . Z . elect , said it was the pioudest moment of his Masonic life , and he felt it a great honour to follow those who havo preceded him . Comp . E . H . Thiellay followed as H . elect , and said ho should only be too

happy to render any assistance to the Chapter . Tho M . E . Z . then said he had with pleasure , to propose the toast of Comps . Cor , Venn and Haslett , who had ably performed their duties . Joppa Lodge , No . 188 . —An emergency meeting of this Lodge was held on Thursday , the 12 th inst ., in lieu of tho regular meeting , which fell on the Bank Holiday , at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street . Bros . L . Lazarus W . M ., Miller S . W ., M . Speigel J . W ., L . M . Auerhaan Treasurer , H . Hymans as Secretary , in tho absence of Bro . E . P . Albert G . P ., Campion J . D ., It . Baker I . G .,

H . P . Isaac Steward ; and Past Masters L . Alexander , H . Berkowitz , H . M . Levy , I . Abrahams , A . G . Dodson , Rosier ; and Bros . Bean , Emanuel , Cohen , Botibol , & o . The Lodge was opened , and the minntes confirmed . Bros . Osborne , Blanks , and Lenzburg were raised . Mr . Burrows was balloted for , and duly initiated into the Order . Bro . Israel Abrahams proposed , and Bro . A . G . Dodson seconded , that

a letter of condolence be sent to Bro . E . P . Albert P . M . and G . P ., sympathising with him on his recent bereavement , occasioned by the loss of a dear member of his family , which was carried nnanimonsly amidst feelings of deep regret from every member of the Lodge . A sum of five guineas was placed on the List of Bro . C . Davis , who is a Steward for the next Festival of the R . M . Institution for Girls . A

letter was read from Bro . M . Levy , of the Montefiore Lodge 1017 , on behalf of the Committee , respecting the non-admission of members of the Hebrew Faith into certain German Lodges , which stated that they would be pleased to meet not only the Joppa Lodge Committee , but any other Lodge , and also thafc they had taken active steps in the matter , and hoped that an early meeting would be convened . Other

Lodges have also sent letters co-operating . Three propositions were handed in for initiation , and the Lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned to slight refreshment . The W . M . proposed tho usual Loyal and Masonic toasts . The toast of the Benevolent Fund of the Lodge was responded to by Bro . L . Alexander P . M ., the President , who informed the brethren that the newly initiated brother , ancl Bro .

Lenzberg , had each given 21 s to the fund . The W . M . proposed tho toast of tho newly initiated , who was one in every way entitled to their respect . The toast was responded to briefly and appropriately . Bro . A . G . Dodson I . P . M . proposed the health or the W . M ., who , in reply said , during the period he occupied the chair , his services would always be at their command ; his endeavours to give them satisfaction

would , he hoped , be successful . The toast of tho visitors was responded to by Bros . J . Lazarus P . M . 205 , and J . W . 1017 , followed by Bros . R . J . Tolmie 861 , and M . Moseley . To the toast of the P . M . ' s , Bros . Dodson , L . Alexander , I . Abrahams , and H . M . Levy , returned thanks . They felt proud to respond to it . They could not have a

better W . M . to do the duties , and hoped he would be for many years among them as a P . M . Bros . Miller and Speigel replied for the Wardens , after which the toast of tho Treas . and officers was given , Bro . L . M . Auerhaan responding . Tho Tyler ' s toast concluded the evening . Bros . Benjamin Rosier and Miller contribnted to the harmony .

Confidence Lodge of Instruction , No . 193 . —The meeting of this Lodgo , which was held at the Whittington , Moor-lane E . G ., on Wednesday , the 11 th instant , was presided over by Bro . D . Posener , who rehearsed the ceremony of the second degree , having Bro . F . Croaker acting as candidate . By a vote of the Lodgo to suspend the standing order , the W . M . vacated the chair in favour of Bro . A . B .

Loewenstark P . M ., who gave a rendering of the ceremony of installation , Bro . M . D . Loewenstark acting as Master elect . Subsequently tho second section of tlie second lecture was worked bv Bro . E . Gottheil , assisted by the brethren under the dictation of Bro . Turcmand . It was announced that the Fifteen Sections would be worked

in this Lodge on Wednesday , the 2 oth , bnt as that is the day on which tho Grancl Festival will be held , it has since been thought desirable to postpone the working of the sections until the follow * ing Wednesday , the 2 nd of May , Bro . Joppa Lodge , No . 188 . —An emergency meeting of this Lodge was held on Thursday , the 12 th inst ., in lieu of tho regular meeting , which fell on the Bank Holiday , at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street . Bros . L . Lazarus W . M ., Miller S . W ., M . Speigel J . W ., L . M . Auerhaan Treasurer , H . Hymans as Secretary , in tho absence of Bro . E . P . Albert G . P ., Campion J . D ., It . Baker I . G .,

H . P . Isaac Steward ; and Past Masters L . Alexander , H . Berkowitz , H . M . Levy , I . Abrahams , A . G . Dodson , Rosier ; and Bros . Bean , Emanuel , Cohen , Botibol , & o . The Lodge was opened , and the minntes confirmed . Bros . Osborne , Blanks , and Lenzburg were raised . Mr . Burrows was balloted for , and duly initiated into the Order . Bro . Israel Abrahams proposed , and Bro . A . G . Dodson seconded , that

a letter of condolence be sent to Bro . E . P . Albert P . M . and G . P ., sympathising with him on his recent bereavement , occasioned by the loss of a dear member of his family , which was carried nnanimonsly amidst feelings of deep regret from every member of the Lodge . A sum of five guineas was placed on the List of Bro . C . Davis , who is a Steward for the next Festival of the R . M . Institution for Girls . A

letter was read from Bro . M . Levy , of the Montefiore Lodge 1017 , on behalf of the Committee , respecting the non-admission of members of the Hebrew Faith into certain German Lodges , which stated that they would be pleased to meet not only the Joppa Lodge Committee , but any other Lodge , and also thafc they had taken active steps in the matter , and hoped that an early meeting would be convened . Other

Lodges have also sent letters co-operating . Three propositions were handed in for initiation , and the Lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned to slight refreshment . The W . M . proposed tho usual Loyal and Masonic toasts . The toast of the Benevolent Fund of the Lodge was responded to by Bro . L . Alexander P . M ., the President , who informed the brethren that the newly initiated brother , ancl Bro .

Lenzberg , had each given 21 s to the fund . The W . M . proposed tho toast of tho newly initiated , who was one in every way entitled to their respect . The toast was responded to briefly and appropriately . Bro . A . G . Dodson I . P . M . proposed the health or the W . M ., who , in reply said , during the period he occupied the chair , his services would always be at their command ; his endeavours to give them satisfaction

would , he hoped , be successful . The toast of tho visitors was responded to by Bros . J . Lazarus P . M . 205 , and J . W . 1017 , followed by Bros . R . J . Tolmie 861 , and M . Moseley . To the toast of the P . M . ' s , Bros . Dodson , L . Alexander , I . Abrahams , and H . M . Levy , returned thanks . They felt proud to respond to it . They could not have a

better W . M . to do the duties , and hoped he would be for many years among them as a P . M . Bros . Miller and Speigel replied for the Wardens , after which the toast of tho Treas . and officers was given , Bro . L . M . Auerhaan responding . Tho Tyler ' s toast concluded the evening . Bros . Benjamin Rosier and Miller contribnted to the harmony .

Confidence Lodge of Instruction , No . 193 . —The meeting of this Lodgo , which was held at the Whittington , Moor-lane E . G ., on Wednesday , the 11 th instant , was presided over by Bro . D . Posener , who rehearsed the ceremony of the second degree , having Bro . F . Croaker acting as candidate . By a vote of the Lodgo to suspend the standing order , the W . M . vacated the chair in favour of Bro . A . B .

Loewenstark P . M ., who gave a rendering of the ceremony of installation , Bro . M . D . Loewenstark acting as Master elect . Subsequently tho second section of tlie second lecture was worked bv Bro . E . Gottheil , assisted by the brethren under the dictation of Bro . Turcmand . It was announced that the Fifteen Sections would be worked

in this Lodge on Wednesday , the 2 oth , bnt as that is the day on which tho Grancl Festival will be held , it has since been thought desirable to postpone the working of the sections until the follow * ing Wednesday , the 2 nd of May , Bro .
