The Seoretary announced , with feelings of regret , that since the last meeting of the Lodge two of its members had died , and in accordance with a suggestion he threw out , Bro . Penn proposed , and Bro . Parkhouse seconded , that letters of condolence should be sent to
the respective families , expressing the great regret felt by the brethren at the loss they had sustained , and sympathising with the relatives in their bereavement . This vote having been agreed to , the Worshipfnl Master closed the Lodge , and the brethren repaired to the banquet hall , where , under the personal superintend , ence of Bro . Linscott , a most enjoyable repast was provided . At
the conclusion of the banquet the customary toasts were given from the chair . With that of the Grand Officers the Worshipful Master coupled the name of Bro . F . Binokes P . G . Steward , who said , that after the observations he had addressed to the members of tbe Earl of Carnarvon Lodge on previous occasions he hardly expected to be called upon , but it seemed to him that the Worshipfnl Masters of
the Lodge were ohartered , and were able to do as they pleased . He had great pleasure in returning thanks for this distinguished toast He looked forward to the time when one of the Past Masters of the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge would be called upon to perform a similar duty to that he had been proud to fill in Grand Lodge long since . Bro . Lander proposed the health of the Worshipful Master . The
brethren of the Lodge generally , who knew him best , universall y respected him , while those to whom he was personally known loved him . Bro . Lander thonght it would be difficult to find a brother better fitted to fill the office throughout the length and breadth of Notting Hill . The W . M . briefly replied . He believed he had arrived at the meridian of his year of office , or half way through it . Hitherto
he had been trying to walk in the footsteps of his worthy predeces . sors , and he hoped to continue so to do until he left the obair . The Lodge had been in existence five years , and he thought bad so far gone on very well . He thanked the brethren for the kind way in which they received the mention of his name . The P . M . 's of the Lodge were next toasted , and with them were coupled the names of
the Treasnrer and Secretary . It was quite unnecessary to say any . thing on their behalf , as their deeds spoke more than words could do . Bro . Lander was tbe first to reply , he hoped he might be spared for many years to take part in the working of the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge . He expressed a wish that the present W . M . of the Lodge might secure a list of at least £ 400 for the Boys' School , for which it
was his intention to act as Steward . Bro . Murlia followed , he hoped the motto of the Lodge would always be to shine in that great feature of Freemasonry—Charity . Bro . Penn , Treasnrer , added hia thanks . He was pleased to say , that the Funds of the Lodge were just then on the right side , and he hoped would ever continue so . Three years ¦ ince , he had expressed a hope , that the Lodge would , in the present
year figure as Vice President of all the Chanties , but he was then unaware that £ 100 was needed for this qualification in eaoh of the three cases ; he hoped that at the end of another three years his wish would be realised . Bro . Parkhouse referred to the programme of the founders of the Lodge , who had endeavoured to start it fairly , and with a desire that it sbould . do its duty to the Charities , and on behalf
of Freemasonry general l y . They had unfortunately hnd an appeal from a late member's family , and he was pleased to say they had been able to secure tbe election of one of his orphans to a place in the Boys' School . The W . M . next proposed the toast of the Charities , and to this Bro . Binckes replied . He had no doubt that the Initiate of the evening bad heard that Fremasonry was little more than
a convivial society , but he felt sure he would ere long learn to look upon it as something better . The three Festivals held during the year had added just on £ 40 , 000 to the funds of the Charities , which showed an average of 10 s or thereabouts as contributed by every Mason in the kingdom , which average was far greater than that reached by any other organisation . As Masons they conld not deny that they did not
enjoy themselves , but so long as they could point to such results as these , in connection with the Charities , he thonght they might rest content , and say to those who found fault , "Go ye and do likewise . " He felt it was his duty in such Lodges as the Earl of Carnarvon not . to make strong appeals , but rather to tender thanks for what had been done by its members in the past . He knew that Masonry was a progressive
science , and that the Earl of Carnarvon was a progressive Lodge j he , therefore saw no reason why they should rest satisfied with what had been done in the past , but rather hoped they would go on striving in the future as much as they hnd done hitherto . The toast of the initiate followed , to which Bro . Phillips replied in most appropriate terms . To the toast of the Visitors Bros . Isaacs and several others responded , after which the Officers were honoured , and the proceedings came to a conclusion .
