This being Officers' night a large number of Brethren attended this old established Lodge of Instruction , which was opened with the usual formalities . Bro . Ross answered the questions , and after the Lodge was opened in tho second degree acted as a candidate for passing . Bro . Atkinson was examined , Lodge opened in the third degree , and the ceremony of raising gone through , the same Brother acting as candidate . The Lodge was resumed to the first degree .
The . Preceptor Bro . Arthur Williams , in one of his characteristic speeches , thanked those Brethren who were present who had attended the last Quarterly Communication , for their kindness in placing him as number six of the elected members to seive on the Board of General Purposes , assuring them that although Preceptor to four Lodges of Instruction , and also a hard worker in the Royal Arch Degree , he would endeavour to attend as punctually at the Board as he had done in the past eight years .
LONDESBOROUGH LODGE , No . 1681 . WEDNESDAY , at the Criterion , Piccadilly , was Officers' night , and the Worshipful Master of the Mother Lodge Bro . G . Head took the chair , being supported by Bros . J . Freer S . W ., Wetheult P . M . J . W ., G . Wood P . M . Prec , J . Hewett acting Sec , T . Kelly S . D ., B . H . Springett I . G ., T . Marks , J . Wynman , J . Wall P . M ., Weeden , Brooks , Brice , and others .
The W . M . advanced the Lodge to the second degree , and Bro . Marks was examined and entrusted . The Lodge was opened in the third degree , and the ceremony of raising was rehearsed . This ceremony being ended the W . M . left , and Bro . Wood Preceptor took the chair . He resumed the Lodge to the first degree , and the ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Weeden acting as candidate . Both the ceremonies were perfectly rendered . Bro . Freer will preside at the next meeting .

The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Anthony acting as candidate . M . of the Ravensbourne Lodge was accorded a cordial vote of thanks for the excellent manner in which he had conducted his duties during the evening , it being the first time he had acted as W . M . at this Lodge of Instruction .

M ., in a most comlimentary manner , proposed that a most hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes for the very excellent working of the Worshipful Master , which was seconded by Bro . Stewart P . M . S . W . and agreed to . Bro . Oxley acknowledged the compliment , at the same time thanking
the Brethren who had so ably assisted him in the work , especially those who were unexpectedly called upon to fill the places of Brethren who were absent . Bro . T . Blyth W . M . of the Mother Lodge announced that their summer outing would take place on Thursday , 22 nd June , and hoped the Brethren would join it , so as to make it a great success .
After hearty good wishes the Lodge was closed , the Brethren expressing their pleasure at having received so great a Masonic treat . PEACE AND HARMONY LODGE , No . 199 . THE annual meeting was held on Monday , 5 th inst ., at Dover , when Bro . F . G . Hayward was installed as Worshipful Master , in the presence of a large number of members and visiting Brethren , including several members of the Artillery Volunteers , in which corps Bro . Hayward holds a commission .
The Installing Master was Bro . W . H . East W . M . of the past year , who carried out the work in excellent style , and was afterwards presented with a Past Master ' s jewel , which had been unanimously voted to him . In the evening the installation banquet took place at the Grand Hotel , under the direction of Bro . H . Schweitzer , the manager .
PORTLAND LODGE , No . 637 . THE usual monthly meeting of this Lodge , at Stoke , was a memorable one in its annals , the Worshipful Master Bro . George Bennett having the great privilege of presenting to three old Past Masters the jewel of that office , and , later , the further privilege of presenting Bibles to the Lewises who had carried the Volume of the Sacred Law on the occasion of the laying the foundation stone of the church of St . Barnabas at Stoke a few months ago .
The recipients of the jewels were three Brethren each of whom is well serving the town of Stoke in a different capacity . The oldest , Bro . W . T . Copeland , is the respected clerk to the Stoke School Board , and served the office of Master of the Lodge in 1877-8 ; Bro . J . B . Ashwell is the no less respected Town Clerk of Stoke , holding the office of Master in 1887-8 ; and the third is Bro . J . Eardley , who held the same office in 1888-9 , and who , though not holding any official position in the civic life of the town , yet serves it well in its commercial interests .
Bro . Bennett , in making the presentations , said they were all deserving Masons , in active touch with the Lodge , Brethren whose services had been deemed worthy of recognition by the Provincial Grand Master . He was only echoing the feelings of the Brethren in presenting the jewels as a mark of Masonic regard and esteem . The presents were duly acknowledged as tokens of honour to be valued and cherished .
The Lodge was closed in due form , but before the Brethren vacated their places the Lewises were called in . They were Masters F . Woolliscroft , H . Turpin , E . Davis , Peake , E . C . Butler , A . W . Prince , But , and J . Leese , who , as stated before , had taken part in a recent ceremony . Each one received a
handsome Bible ,- and Bro . Copeland , in addressing the youths , said the Book they had received was highly prized among Masons ; he hoped each would keep it as a memento , study its pages , and let it be the guide of their lives and actions . The Worshipful Master added a few wordB , and the evening ' s business ended .
UNITED LODGE , No . 697 . THE annual installation meeting was held at the George Hotel , Colchester , on Wednesday , 31 st ult . There was a good attendance of members and visitors , the latter including the Provincial Grand Secretary Bro . T . J . Railing , and Bro . J . B . Boul ton , of Forest Gate .
The chief business was the installation as Worshipful Master of Bro . A . S . B . Sparling , who was installed in a very able manner by Bro . H . E . Baker
P . M . Two Past Master's jewels were presented , one to Bro . A . Gosling , and the other to Bro . R . Emson . The new W . M . was heartily congratulated by the visitors upon his accession to the chair . After the Lodge was closed a handsome banquet was served by Mrs . White , to between fifty and sixty guests . The W . M . presided , J and was supported by several Provincial Grand Officers .
ST . JOHN LODGE , No . 827 . rPIHE members had their annual summer outing on Monday , 5 th inst ., 1 when Chester , Eaton Hall , and Hawarden were visited . The party , which numbered fifty-five , and included members and their wives , travelled by the London and North Western Railway to Chester , saloon carriages being provided for them . From the Grosvenor Hotel ,
Chester , they drove in char-a-bancs to Eaton Hall , the seat of the Duke of Westminster . After the Hall had been viewed and the grounds inspected , the journey was continued to Hawarden . Here the Church and Castle and other places of interest were visited . The party were then conveyed back by char-a-bancs from Hawarden to Chester , and dinner was served at the Grosvenor Hotel .
Chester was left at half-past seven , the journey being broken at Manchester , where about an hour was spent . Dewsbury was reached shortly after eleven o ' clock . The weather being beautifully fine , the outing proved to be a very pleasant one , the drive especially being very much enjoyed . The arrangements for the outing were made by Bros . C . P . Pickersgill W . M ., Henry Hill I . P . M ., George Ellis J . W ., and James Fitton S . D . and Treas .

"V"TT ITH a thirty years record of good Masonic and charitable work , this VV Lodge holds a prominent position in the Province of West Lancashire , and the proceedings , interesting and successful , in connection with the annual installation meeting , on Monday afternoon , 5 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope Street , Liverpool , gave satisfactory evidence of vitality and the prevalence of a true brotherly spirit .
