Freemasonry As It Is.
deeds , disabuse the minds of those who lay so unjust an imputation to our charge . When we took our first footsteps within the threshold of our Order we were enveloped in a cloud of darkness , and as
we progressed in the diffbrent degrees we gradually got a glimpse into further mysteries and symbols ; but we must remember that every word communicated to ns contains in it volumes of signification which time alone can unfold ,
provided we apply our minds to investigate the various great principles which Masonry seeks to impart . Our symbols are principally intended to illustrate traditions connected with the Craft from a remote antiquity ,
and so are the lectures on the tracing board , while the catechetical details of instructions in the several degrees are intended to impress on our minds in a convenient form
those moral principles and virtues which ought to characterise every Freemason . It is to be regretted that in some of our Lodges in India
sufficient inquiries are not always made before admitting a candidate , or before permitting him to further participate in our mysteries . Some Masters of Lodges , in their anxiety to augment their numerical strength , have at times admitted candidates without sufficient regard to their
education , antecedents , position in life , and other qualifications which are necessary and requisite in every candidate , and the want of such circumspection has resulted in errors which it became afterwards difficult to rectify . Instances
are not wanting in which brethren not properly selected are sometimes found guilty of gross unmasonio conduct . For the present , it remains for me to appeal to your good sense , to exhort you to bear in mind the position you occupy and
the duty you owe to yourselves , to your country , and to the Craft . As men of honour and intellect , it is for you to prove that you are fully equal to the duties and responsibilities of your position . You have to show that the
moral courage which prompted and sustained you in your resolve to become Freemasons , has not forsaken you , and that you are no less determined now to push forward in the path than when you first entered it . You are the
pioneers of a noble cause , and you should convince the world at large by your virtues , by your good deeds , by stedfast devotion to duty , that you are worthy of the noble Craft to which you belong , and that you have inherited
your share of that energy which impelled your ancestors to push on from the plateaus of Central Asia to the fertile fields of India . You will thereby not only vindicate your
own manliness , but prepare the way for your countrymen who do not now belong to the Craft to follow your example . The enterprise is worthy of the highest commendation , and I wish you God speed in your undertaking .
