Reports Of Meetings.
Allcroft Lodge , he had four very excellent reasons for a special call upon their generosity , namely , the four sons of members of the Lodge who were present inmates of the Institution , and he might mention that the father of one of the boys was a Mason who had not taken his second degree . He thanked the members for their
liberal support in the past , and paid a grateful tribute to Brother William Thomas , who had brought up a record list of subscriptions ; but he hoped their present Worshipful Master would beat that record , and so enable the Board of Management to extend their beneficial work .
The usual compliments were paid to the Officers of the Lodge , and the proceedings were brought to a happy termination at a late hour . During the evening an excellent entertainment was provided , in which Bros . Walter Churcher , Maldwyn Humphreys , John Josey and Will Edwards took part , while Bros . Dr . Haskins and James Kift ably officiated at the piano . • • Ba . rna . to Lodge , No . 2 265 .
INSTALLATION OF BRO . JOHN HODGKYNS . THE annual festival of this prosperous Lodge was held on Tuesday , at the Cafe Monico , Piccadilly Circus , VV ., when , as is usual at these meetings , a large number of Brethren assembled to take part in the interesting proceedings . Bro . J . L . Goldstein W . M . presided and opened the Lodge , which was held in the handsome " Regent" Saloon of the establishment , at half past six o ' clock .
Among those then present were Bros . George Everett P . G . T ., Major T . C . Walls P . G . S . B ., W . A . Scurrah P . G . S . B ., J . J . Thomas P . G . S . B ., John Mason P . G . S . The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed , the Lodge was advanced to the second degree , when Bro . John Hodgkyns W . M .-elect was presented by Bro . Humphrey Phillips
P . M ., to receive at the hands of his predecessor the benefit of installation . This ceremony was very creditably performed by Bro . Goldstein , who was assisted by Bros . Geo . Everett as S . W ., C . Marcus as J . W ., and Van Dyck as I . G . Bro . Hodgkyns was placed in the chair of the Lodge in the presence of a Board of thirty-seven Installed Masters , who afterwards tendered their congratulations .
Upon the return of the Brethren the new Master was duly proclaimed and saluted . The following Officers for the year were invested : Bros . G . H . Paine , 5 . W ., J . J . Harwood J . W ., M . J . Jessop P . M . Treasurer , L . S . Genese P . M . Secretary , S . L . Isaacs S . D ., J . Hart J . D ., W . D . Courtney D . C , G . Louisson I . G ., W . Wright Organist , H . J . Barnato , L . A . Britton and A . M . Abrahams Stewards , R . Whiting Tyler .
The beautiful addresses were delivered by Bro . Goldstein , at the conclusion of which Bro . Hodgkyns , in the name of the Lodge , presented him the truly magnificent Past Master's jewel , which was further embellished by a fine diamond , the gift of Bro . H . J . Barnato . In making the presentation the W . M . referred in very
flattering terms to the efficient manner in which Bro . Goldstein had performed his various and onerous duties during the past year , whilst his popularity was so great that it was with much diffidence that he , the Master , followed in his footsteps . The Lodge would ever remember the services he had rendered , and he cordially wished him long life to wear the jewel and enjoy his honours .
Bro . Goldstein , in reply , said he had endeavoured to do his duty while in the chair , and to further the interests of the Barnato Lodge . Although he belonged to others Lodges , there was really only one Lodge for every Mason , and that was the one in which he was initiated . He was very proud to receive the jewel , because he knew that the Brethren were satisfied with him . He thanked them
most sincerely for the honour they had paid him . Bro . Jessop Treasurer presented the balance sheet , showing the flourishing state of the finances of the Lodge and its Benevolent Fund , which , after a few remarks , was accepted and adopted . The Secretary read letters from Lord Roberts , the Lord Mayor , and several other distinguished Freemasons , regretting their inability to attend . The Visiting Brethren having tendered their congratulations the Lodge was closed .
The installation banquet was served in the International Hall , the company numbering about 130 . The menu was of novel des gn , being "something like a scroll of vellum or parchment" with the items printed thereon , but was hardly convenient for its intended
purpose . Profuse liberality reigned supreme , and the wants of the Brethren were amply administered to by the Stewards . After dinner the customary complimentary toasts ' were submitted by Brother Hodgkyns , who was enthusiastically received ; and cordiality and unanimity were the order of the evening .
An excellent musical programme was provided by Brother W . Wright P . P . G . O . Middlesex , the items being sustained by Miss Marian Lewis . Miss Jeanic Allester , Bros . Will Edwards , Walter George , Arthur Court . The two latter lent colour to the scene by appearing in a fancy costume , with red dre ^ s coats , faced with blue , knee breeches , and silk stockings , which made a pleasing variation . The proceedings were protracted till a late hour , but all agreed they had spent a most enjoyable evening ,

John Mann Ci-one Worshipful Master . The principal business of the day , however , was that of installing Bro . C . A . L . Swale into the chair of K . S ., this ceremony being also performed by Brother Crone , assisted by Past Masters Bro . Thos . Brayshaw , who addressed the newly-installed Master ; Bro . Dr . C . \ V . Before the Lodge was closed Bro . Last year ,, when Bro . Crone was installed as W . M . of the Castleberg Lodge , we referred to the loyal support given him by members of his Mother Lodge ( the Architect , No . 1375 ) of which he was at the time Worshipful Master , and on this occasion that loyalty was not withheld , several members being present from the Province of West Lancashire to see him instal his successor .
The festival of St . John was held as heretofore in the large dining room of the hotel , and the menu furnished by the proprietor ( Mr . J . W . Dugdale ) would have elicited words of commendationhad it been possible for him to be present—even from that ancient
and successful general Paulus ^ -Emilius , the best entertainer of his time , who contended that " it required the same sort of spirit to manage a banquet as a battle , with this difference , that the one should be made as pleasant to friends , and the other as formidable to enemies , as possible . "
Loyal and Masonic toasts were , proposed and duly responded to , the visitors being primarily represented by Bro . Councillor Jas . J . Lambert P . G . D . Eng ., who said he was glad to be there that evening to support his old friend John Mann Crone . He felt disappointed that he had not been able to be at his installation a year ago , and no doubt Bro . Crone would have begun to think that he
would not be present on this occasion , but there he was . He might add that unfortunately he had never before visited any Yorkshire Lodge . But he had heard a great deal about their hospitality , and he must acknowledge that he was really very much impressed with the hearty and good old Yorkshire welcome which had been extended towards him . He also thanked Bro . Crone for this kind
invitation . The health of the Worshipful Master was proposed by Brother Tom Proctor , in a very neat and appropriate speech , the same being briefly responded to by Bro . Swale W . M . Bro . Chas . E . Bygrave P . M ., & c , who had performed a similar function at Bro . Crone ' s installation , again proposed the toast of
his health , to which the latter replied , saying that the fact of living so far away from Settle must necessarily have militated against his successful work as their iirincipal Officer . Bro . Swale , however , would not suffer from this disadvantage , for he would be in constant touch with them , and he possessed all the qualifications for becoming a popular Master . He had had a pleasant year in the chair , and he was extremely glad that he had not retired without
a candidate for initiation . Bro . Swale was a very old friend , and he could assure him that he would endeavour to attend regularly during his tenure of Office , so as to render whatever support he could to his successor . Personally he must thank all his Officers for their well-intentioned and worthy efforts towards himself . Without such support it was impossible for a Worshi pful Master to be successful , but he firmly believed that in this respect Bro , Swale was in good hands ,
