A RECORD OF FOUR DAYS' MASONIC WORK AT YORK .

THE ancient spirit which for so many centuries preserved in York the working of symbolic Masonry has not yet died out , and in that old centre there aro still to bo found a few enthusiastic brethren to whom no labour is too groat if its object is to further the interests of the Koyal Art in any of its branches . To them it is over a pleasure when tho opportunity occurs for introducing a good aud worthy visiting brother into their charmed circle , and such a chance was eagerly

embraced last week . Bro . A . M . Broadley , a Mason whose Masonic fame has travelled over tho world , and who had before visited York and been worthily welcomed , having signified his willingness to consecrate two now Mark Lodges just warranted in tho District of North and East Yorkshire , arrangements were made for a Masonic programme to extend over four days , including the two days of consecration , and tho

scheme was carried out with the most complete success , the result being a most enjoyable series of Masonio ceremonies and visits exemplifying the working of tho rituals iu most of the important branches of Masonry . Work began at York , on tho afternoon of Monday the 7 th inst ., when at 3 . 30 . p . m . an emergency meeting of the Eboracum Conclave

of the lied Cross of Homo and Consta ' ntine , No . 137 , was held at the Masonic Eooms , Queen ' s Hotel , for tho purpose of installing Companion J . A . Bindley , of Burtou-on-Trent , P . M . and P . Z ., Abbey Lodge aud Chapter No . 024 . Tho Conclave was opened by E . Comp . J . S . Cumberland M . P . S ., tho Viceroy ' s chair being occupied by E . Comp . T . B . Whytehead P . S ., and that of Prolate by E . Comp . A . M .

Broadley P . S . Int . Getil . unattached . Amongst tho brethren present wero also Comp . Geo . Simpson S . G ., W . B . Dyson J . G ., A . T . B . Turner Prefect , and P . Pearson Sentinel . The ceremony having been performed tho M . l' . S . on behalf of the Conclave welcomed their Brother A . M . Broadley , who is an honorary member of the Conclave , and expressed thb pleasure experienced by the members at seeing him

amongst them , accompanied by his friend and their brother the newly installed knight , to which Bro . Broadley responded . After the close of the Conclave the St . Peter Sanctuary and Commandery of St . John were successively opened by Bro . T . B . AVhytehead Iut . Gem . unattached , and the degrees were conferred upon Comp . J . A . Bindley , after which the Sanctuary and Commandery were closed with the full

ceremonial . The members having retired , reassembled at a high tea aud spent a pleasant hour in fraternal intercourse . At half-past six an adjournment was again made to the Lodge rooms , where the members of the Eboracum Lodge , No . 1611 , had been called by an emergency summons to exemplify their working in the first degree . M . M . C , and was received by the W . M . with a hearty

welcome , the brethren loudly expressing their pleasure at once more greeting amongst them one who they are proud to own as an honorary member of the Lodge . The work of the Lodge then proceeded , consisting of the initiation of a candidate , which was very neatly performed . At its conclusion Bros . A . M . Broadley , J . A . Bindley , and T . B .

Whytehead left the Eboracum and drove to the Masonic Hall , where the York Lodge , No . 236 , was holding a regular meeting ) the work consisting of two initiations and a passing . The passing had been concluded , but the party were in time to witness the initiation , which was done very impressively by the W . M . Bro . M . Eooke , who was supported by Bros . J . Todd P . M . Past Provincial Grand Registrar ,

A . Buckle P . M . Provincial Grand Deacon , XV . H . Gainforth P . M ., J . Sykes Rymer S . W ., G . Kirby J . W ., and a number of other brethren . At nine o'clock the party again took carriage and returned to the quarters of the Eboracum Lodge , where they found the brethren at refreshment , and here a most pleasant evening was passed . A number of toasts were proposed , the most important of

which was that of the guests of the evemny , which was responded to by Bros . Broadley and Bindley . In his speech Bro . Broadley made some most interesting references to his previous visit , to the interest he felt in York and York Masonry , to which ho had been introduced by his friend Brn . Whytehead ; to the District of Malta , of which he was a Past Deputy District Grand Master ; to the working and

progress of Masonry iu Tunis , where he resided ; and many other topics congenial to the minds of his hearers . At eleven o'clock the party broke up with the Tyler's toast , and after the performance of a number of gless by the Lodge glee party , conducted by Bro . J . S . Cumberland P . M ., who is in music , as in ritual , a tower of strength in himself . Just before closing , a collection was made in aid of a poor

and distressed brother in the North , which raised tho sum of £ 1 lis . On the afternoon of the following day ( Tuesday , the Sth instant ) at 3 . 30 p . m ., the York College of Rosicrucians held a meeting for tho purpose of receiving into the M . C . Bros . J . A . Bindley of Burton-ou-Treut , and C . S . Lane of Hartlepool . R . W . Fra . T . B . Whytehead IX . presided , and there wore also present Fratres Rev . W . 0 . Lnki ?

The aspirants named wore received and invested , aud the Chief Adopt then announced that ho had received authority from tlio Supreme Magus of England to confer the grade of VIII . upon Fra . Broadley for tho purpose of enabling him to fouud a College of the Order in Tunis , and accordingly he had

mnch pleasure in announcing that ho had already acted npon that authority , and had conferred that grade upon their worthy frater . This being an emergency meeting , called for special business , nothing further was brought forward , and tho M . accepted as candidates , were conducted to the Guard Chamber , and received tho Mediterranean Pass , and thence passed the five banners , conducted by Fra . T . B . Whytehead , and finally were received and installed members of the Order by Fra . A . M . Broadley , who subsequently delivered a long , eloquent , and interesting oration , embracing not only the history of the Order , but other points of elucidation

not usually touched upon . Many good wishes having been expressed by the Visitors , the Priory was closed , and the York Knights enter , tained their guests at supper . Many toasts were honoured , including that of Prosperity to the Preceptory , Fras . Broadley and Woodall both expressing their pleasure in seeing its vitality , and the latter alluding to a scheme on foot , projected by Fra . Whytehead , for still

further increasing its effectiveness and usefulness in Masonic good works . At a late hour the Knights separated , amid mutual good wishes . On Wednesday morning a party of tbe brethren were entertained at breakfast , at the Queen ' s Hotel , by Bros . Bindley and Broadley , preparatory to a railway journey to Middlesborough , a town on the

river Tees , for the purpose of constituting and consecrating a Mark Lodge . About , noon tbe party arrived in Middlesborough , and found their way to the Masonic Hall , where Bro . J . S . Cumberland , acting as D . C , proceeded to make arrangements for the ceremony . At two o ' clock the Middlesborough brethren assembled , as well as Visitors from Newcastle , Darlington , and Stockton . The work began by the

opening of a Mark Lodge by Bro . A . M . Broadley , Prov . G . Master of Tunis and Malta , by deputation from the G . M . M . M . of England . The Senior Warden ' s chair was occupied by Bro . T . B . Whytehead P . M ., and tbe Junior Warden's chair by Bro . Rev . W . C . Lukis W . M . York Lodge ( T . l . ) Bro . S . Middleton P . M . Star in the East Lodge ( Scarborough ) acted as M . O ., and Bro . J . S . Cumberland S . W . York

Lodge ( T . I . ) as S . D . Bros . 0 . Marshall and J . E . Wilkinson of York carried out the musical arrangements most effectively . The first business was the advancement of a number of candidates , which was performed by Bro . J . __ . Meek P . M . of the Darlington Mark Lodge and W . M . designate of the Middlesborough Lodge . The R . W . Bro . A . M . Broadley theu proceeded with the Consecration ceremony ,

Bro . J . W . Woodall P . G . M . O . acting as Chaplain . The oration , which was delivered by the Consecrating Officer , was a masterly piece of Masonic oratory , in which the history , teaching , associations , aud influence of the degree were all touched upon , and our only regret was that no shorthand writer was present in order lo preserve a record of what would havo been a valuable and instructive

paper , but which , being delivered extempore , we have no means of p lacing before our readers . At the conclusion of the consecration the chair was assumed by W . Bro . T . B . Whytehead P . M . York Lodge ( T . I . ) , who proceeded to instal the W . M . designate , Bro . J . UMeek P . M ., and afterwards to proclaim him the first W . Master of the Middlesborough Lodgo of Mark Master Masons , No . 276 . The

Officers were appointed . The W . M . then closed his Lodge , and most of the Brethren and Visitors adjourned to the Queen ' s Hotel , where they partook of a good dinner at a moderate charge . The toast list was brief , the W . M . giving tbe Queen , the Grand M . M . Mand Grand Lodge , responded to by Bros . A . M . Broadley Prov . G 3 & -

accepted as candidates , were conducted to the Guard Chamber , and received tho Mediterranean Pass , and thence passed the five banners , conducted by Fra . T . B . Whytehead , and finally were received and installed members of the Order by Fra . A . M . Broadley , who subsequently delivered a long , eloquent , and interesting oration , embracing not only the history of the Order , but other points of elucidation

not usually touched upon . Many good wishes having been expressed by the Visitors , the Priory was closed , and the York Knights enter , tained their guests at supper . Many toasts were honoured , including that of Prosperity to the Preceptory , Fras . Broadley and Woodall both expressing their pleasure in seeing its vitality , and the latter alluding to a scheme on foot , projected by Fra . Whytehead , for still

further increasing its effectiveness and usefulness in Masonic good works . At a late hour the Knights separated , amid mutual good wishes . On Wednesday morning a party of tbe brethren were entertained at breakfast , at the Queen ' s Hotel , by Bros . Bindley and Broadley , preparatory to a railway journey to Middlesborough , a town on the

river Tees , for the purpose of constituting and consecrating a Mark Lodge . About , noon tbe party arrived in Middlesborough , and found their way to the Masonic Hall , where Bro . J . S . Cumberland , acting as D . C , proceeded to make arrangements for the ceremony . At two o ' clock the Middlesborough brethren assembled , as well as Visitors from Newcastle , Darlington , and Stockton . The work began by the

opening of a Mark Lodge by Bro . A . M . Broadley , Prov . G . Master of Tunis and Malta , by deputation from the G . M . M . M . of England . The Senior Warden ' s chair was occupied by Bro . T . B . Whytehead P . M ., and tbe Junior Warden's chair by Bro . Rev . W . C . Lukis W . M . York Lodge ( T . l . ) Bro . S . Middleton P . M . Star in the East Lodge ( Scarborough ) acted as M . O ., and Bro . J . S . Cumberland S . W . York

Lodge ( T . I . ) as S . D . Bros . 0 . Marshall and J . E . Wilkinson of York carried out the musical arrangements most effectively . The first business was the advancement of a number of candidates , which was performed by Bro . J . __ . Meek P . M . of the Darlington Mark Lodge and W . M . designate of the Middlesborough Lodge . The R . W . Bro . A . M . Broadley theu proceeded with the Consecration ceremony ,

Bro . J . W . Woodall P . G . M . O . acting as Chaplain . The oration , which was delivered by the Consecrating Officer , was a masterly piece of Masonic oratory , in which the history , teaching , associations , aud influence of the degree were all touched upon , and our only regret was that no shorthand writer was present in order lo preserve a record of what would havo been a valuable and instructive

paper , but which , being delivered extempore , we have no means of p lacing before our readers . At the conclusion of the consecration the chair was assumed by W . Bro . T . B . Whytehead P . M . York Lodge ( T . I . ) , who proceeded to instal the W . M . designate , Bro . J . UMeek P . M ., and afterwards to proclaim him the first W . Master of the Middlesborough Lodgo of Mark Master Masons , No . 276 . The

Officers were appointed . The W . M . then closed his Lodge , and most of the Brethren and Visitors adjourned to the Queen ' s Hotel , where they partook of a good dinner at a moderate charge . The toast list was brief , the W . M . giving tbe Queen , the Grand M . M . Mand Grand Lodge , responded to by Bros . A . M . Broadley Prov . G 3 & -
