W ., Ross J . W ., Bisset S . D ., Halford J . D ., Tolmie acting Preceptor , Fenner Secretary , Christopher I . G ., Roberts , Defriez , Isaac , Davis , & c . Lodge was opened in dne form . Minutes of last meeting
confirmed . Bro . Roberts answered the usual questions and was ontrnsted . The Lodgo was opened in the 2 nd degree , when the ceremony of passing waa rehearsed by the W . M . in a very able manner , Bro . Roberts acting as candidate . Bro . A . W . Fenner worked the 1 st , Bro . Defriez the 2 nd , Bro . Tolmie the 3 rd , and Bro . Defriez tho 4 th and 5 th sections of tho lectnre , assisted by the brethren . Lodge was resumed
to 1 st degree , when Bro . Cook S . W . was duly elected W . M . for the next meeting , which will bo in a fortnight ' s timo . On tho proposition of Bro . Tolmie , who paid a high tribute to the W . M ., seconded by Bro . Fenner , a vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to the W . Phoenix I « 0 dge , No . 173 . —The members of this Lodge met on Saturday , tho 12 th inst ., at Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street . The following particulars of this old Lodgo may be interesting . It is on the Registry of the Athol Grand Lodgo , and was established on the 27 th September 1785 , at tho Swan Inn in the Borough , whon the number wa 3 231 . At tho Union in 1813 tho number was 202 , and
when the alteration of numbers took place in 1863 ifc took the present number , 173 . The Lodgo will attain its Centenary in 1885 . The W . M ., Bro . J . D . Massey , occupied the chair ; S . S . The Lodge was opened , and the minutes confirmed . Bro . R . R . Dnnlop , Hamilton Kilwinning Lodge , No . 7 , was elected a joining member . Bro . Bennett , a sun of Sir Sterndale Bennett , tho omiuent musical composer , and C . F . Kearley were passed to the 2 nd degroe , and Bro . Gilham was raised , tho working of tho AV . M . and officers deserving especial praise . Bro . Jekyll , tho organist , played some
very excellent and appropriate music . A , board of installed masters was then formed , and Bro . S . S . Phillips S . W . nnd W . M . elect was presented to the Lodgo . Ho was duly installed Master , by the retiring W . M . Bro . J . D . Massey . On tho conclusion of the addresses Bro . J . D . Massey received the deserved encomiums of overy brother and visitor . Tho W . M . having been
saluted , invested his officers , addressing a few pertinent remarks to each . The Lodge was then closed , and the brethren , 73 in number , adjourned to the Crown room , where a sumptuous banquet and dessert was provided by the energetic manager , Bro . E . Dawkins . The W . M . ably presided . In proposing the toast of II . M . the Queen , ho spoke of the kindly feeling shown by her . She had always evinced the greatest
solicitude for the welfare of overy one of her subjects . The National Anthem was then sting . The toast of H . R . H . the M . W . G . M ., the Earl of Carnarvon Pro G . M ., tho R . W ., the Earl of Skelmersdale D . G . M ., and tho rest of the Grand Officers , found a very able respondent in Bro . W . Ough P . G . P . Bro . Farquharson then sang " Let Brotherly Love Continue . " Bro . Massey I . P . M . then rose . Ho
had great pleasuro in proposing the next toast , that was the health of the W . M . ( Cheers ) . In filling the various offices , he had done so to their satisfaction , and during the short period he had occupied the chair , and by the manner he had invested his officers , he had shown his proficiency ; he was sure , at tho expiration of his year of ollico , Bro . Phillips would retire with tho knowledge that he had efficiently
discharged his dnty , and gained tho regard and esteem of every one in the Lodgo . ( Cheers ) . Tho W . M . said he felt great pleasure iu having his health proposed by one who had occupied the chair so worthily , and who had also installed him . Order , after which the Lodge , having been advanced , Bros . Wilson and Spill wero raised . Tho Lodge was resumed to the first degree , and the J . W . rose and expressed his great sorrow at having to ask the Lodge to pass a vote of condolence to their S . D ., on the loss of his wife . This was seconded by the W . M ., and carried unanimously by the brethren , amid expressions of general
regret and sympathy . Tho petition of a late member of the Lodge was then introduced by the Secretary , and signed by the members previous to its presentation to the Lodge of Benevolence , and , after some few remarks from Bro . P . M . Lacey , the sum of five guineas was voted from the fund of Benevolence attached to the Lodge , to"assist tho'Bro ., for the timo being . The case of the
widow of a deceased Bro ., who had been iuitiated in the Sincerity , was then brought forward , and we aro pleased to announce that a similar amount to that given in the previous case was voted from the same fund . The widow may certainly havo cause to thank the members of the Sincerity for this illustration of true Masonry , her husband had only paid one year ' s subscription to the Lodge , and now they
unhesitatingly assist her m the hour of her affliction . Lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to refreshments . After grace the W . M . proposed the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts , in introducing thafc of the Grand Officers , he referred with pleasure to the presence of Bro . Albert , who in reply thanked the brethren for the way in which tho toast had been received . From what he had seen that evening , he
considered Graud Lodge should be proud of having such a Lodge under its banner . The next toast , that of the Initiates , was regularly received and acknowleged by both of the brethren who had been initiated during the evening , in short , but well chosen words . Bro . P . M . Lacey proposed the health of the W . M . He had had the pleasure of initiating , and also of installing their present Master , and
thus felt very great interest in his Masonic welfare . He is well known as a staunch snpporter of the Charities , the interest in which he was always endeavouring to extend . The W . M . heartily thanked the brethren . His principal feeling with regard to Freemasonry was charity . Nono of us know how soon we may have occasion to call npon the funds of the institutions connected with tho Order ,
therefore we should ably snpport them when in a position to do so . He referred to the fact of tho Lodge being represented afc the approaching festival of the Boys' School , and hoped the Sincerity list would bo an extensivo one . He concluded by again thanking the brethren for drinking his health , and then proposed the toast of tho Visitors , of whom ho was pleased to see so strong a muster . Several
of tho visitors acknowledged the toast , and one and all praised the Lodge for tho charitable way in which they had acted during the time of business . Some fnrther remarks were made by the W . M . on the subject of Charity , with the view of introducing Bro . Pereival ( who is the Steward for the Boys' Festival ) to the notice of the brethren , and he , after going the round of the table , announced thafc
the sums promised on his list now amounted to £ 128 lis Od . After expressing his satisfaction , he remarked in the usual dissatisfied manner that he should not be content until he had got £ 150 promised . The toast of the Past Masters having been honoured , was replied to by Bro . Lacey . The health of the Officers , and the toast of tho Tyler concluded the proceedings .

Lacey proposed the health of the W . M . He had had the pleasure of initiating , and also of installing their present Master , and
thus felt very great interest in his Masonic welfare . He is well known as a staunch snpporter of the Charities , the interest in which he was always endeavouring to extend . The W . M . heartily thanked the brethren . His principal feeling with regard to Freemasonry was charity . Nono of us know how soon we may have occasion to call npon the funds of the institutions connected with tho Order ,
therefore we should ably snpport them when in a position to do so . He referred to the fact of tho Lodge being represented afc the approaching festival of the Boys' School , and hoped the Sincerity list would bo an extensivo one . He concluded by again thanking the brethren for drinking his health , and then proposed the toast of tho Visitors , of whom ho was pleased to see so strong a muster . Several
of tho visitors acknowledged the toast , and one and all praised the Lodge for tho charitable way in which they had acted during the time of business . Some fnrther remarks were made by the W . M . on the subject of Charity , with the view of introducing Bro . Pereival ( who is the Steward for the Boys' Festival ) to the notice of the brethren , and he , after going the round of the table , announced thafc
the sums promised on his list now amounted to £ 128 lis Od . After expressing his satisfaction , he remarked in the usual dissatisfied manner that he should not be content until he had got £ 150 promised . The toast of the Past Masters having been honoured , was replied to by Bro . Lacey . The health of the Officers , and the toast of tho Tyler concluded the proceedings .
