shipful Master , assumed control of the gavel ; he had to pro - pose a toast which it had never been his privilege to do before , and a privilege that might never occur again . We have here a brother who has come a long way to visit us , and as a brother and a representative of the Masonic press we are delighted to welcome him . The applause which greets this announcement shows me that
you greatly appreciate the importanco of this toast . The press is a mighty means of diffusing knowledge , and with the freedom of the press is associated tho liberty of a nation . He regretted that so few Masons read . There aro great advantages to be derived from the careful perusal of such a journal as the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . His ( the speaker ' s ) acquaintance with that journal had extended over
a long period , and he always enjoyed and appreciated its contents very much . It was a journal he could commend to eaoh of those present most heartily . The worshipful and worthy brother continued his remarks by speaking of the FREEMASON ' CHRONICLE in the most complimentary and appreciative manner , and concluded by again urging the brethren to a more extended knowledge of the working
of tho Craft through reading Masonio literature , and by calling upon the brethren to drink most fraternally to the health of Bro . Davies . Bro . Davies , in response to the last toast , which had been most enthusiastically received , spoke at length . He congratulated the worship , ful brother on the highly appreciative sentiments which actuated him to propose the toast in such a kind and able manner , aud also the
brethren who had done honour to him personally by receiving his name in connection with the journal he had the honour to represent . A very pleasant social chat was enjoyed , after which the Tyler ' s toast brought a thoroughly edifying eveuing to a close . Besides those already mentioned , Bros . Bradley , Booth , Meadows , and others , contributed by their vocal efforts to amuse the company .
