BRO . DR . JOHN HUGHES . THE remains of the late Bro . Dr . John Hughes , M . R . C . S , L . R . C . P ., of Carry Rivel , near Langport , who died at his residence , on the 27 th nlfc ., at the age of 56 , were consigned to their last resting place , in the parish churchyard , on Monday , tho 2 nd inst ., when Officers of tho Province of

Somerset , brethren from neig hbouring Lodges , and Officers and brethren from Portcullis Lodge , No . 2038 ( Langport ) , attonded the funeral , and ( by dispensation ) wore Masonic clothing . Tbe brethren proceeded from Portcullis Lodge to the residence of tho deceased , whore they took a position

allowing tho body and mourners to pass through , and then followed to the Church of St . Andrew , where the Rev . C . M . Speke Males , Vicar of tho Parish , and a brother Mason , performed the office for the dead . At the conclusion of the service , the brethren filed past the grave , each casting a

sprig of acacia on the coffin . Professional friends of deceased , and a large number of parishioners , attended the funeral , including Mr . J . Louch , clerk to the Langport Board of Guardians , and Dr . Johnstone , of Langport . The coffin was borne upon the shoulders of eight parishioners ,

and was covered with splendid flowers , among which was a beautiful wreath , contributed by the brethren of Portcullis Lodge . The grave was lined with ivy and bordered with acacia . A large congregation attended the ceremony . The deceased had been a medical practitioner in Curry

Rivel for many years , and was one of the district medical officers of the Langport Union . As a Freemason he was a P . P . G . S . B . of Somerset , and Senior Past Master of the Portcullis Lodge , Langport . He took great interest iu the various Institutions .

THE funeral of the lata Dr . William J . Fraser took place at Ashburton Church , on Saturday , the 14 th iust ., amid many tokens of sorrow . Leaving the house at three o ' clock , the cortege consisted of most of the principal townsmen . As representing the Ashburton Lodge , No . 2180 , of which

IHB mortal remains of Bro . the Rev . George Lemon Church , P . P . G . S . Warden , vicar of Chacevvater , were interred on Tuesday , the 10 th inst ., in the family vault at tho parish churchyard of St . Paul ' s . The rev . gentleman , who held the living of Chacewater for forty-three years ,

was a Freemason ( Boseawen Lodge ) , besides which he was a member of nearly all the public institutions of the village . He was very popular with hia parishioners , and highly esteemed by all who knew him . The deceased was carried

to his last resting place by eight brother Masons , while a large number of members of the Boseawen Lodge were attired in the Cornish Masonic regalia—a white sash , rosette and gloves , together with a sprig of acacia .

R . of the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire , was found dead in the parlour attached to his chemist ' s shop in the main street of Northallerton . The deceased gentlemanwho

, was 45 years of age , had been for 22 years in business as a chemist and druggist , and was widely respected . He was a prominent Churchman , having several times filled the office of churchwarden aud sidesman , while he was a

member of the select vestry , one of tho hon . sees , of tho Aorth allertou Sunday School , and he has been an ardent supporter of tho Northallerton Cottage Hospital since its ' ormafcion . Master , was in the chair , supported by Bro . the Rev . C . J . Martyn , Deputy Provincial Grand Master . The Provincial Grand Lodge having been opened , the minutes of the Norwich meeting in 1889 were confirmed . The reports from the various Lodges were presented , showing th ^ t the

numei'ical strength had been maintained . A code of revised bye-laws was considered and adopted . After the transaction of other business , the appointment and investment of Provincial Grand Officers for tho year was proceeded with . Bro . A . H . Moves waa installed P . S . G . W ., and Bro . the Masonio Hall , Ilfracombe , on the 11 th inst ., Bro . William Walteia S . W . was unanimously elected Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . Bro . J . S . Catford P . M . waa re-elected Treasurer , and Brother John Blaokford Tyler . The installation of the W . M . elect aud the appointment and investment of Officers will take place on the Festival of St . John the Baptist , Tuesday , 21 th inat ., at 5 * 15 o ' clook p . m .

On Thursday , the 5 th mat ., a large number of the members of the Monte fiore Lodge of Instruction attended a meeting at the St . James ' s Hall Restaurant , to evince their regard for the Preceptor aud one of the Founders of the Lodge , Bro . Nuthaniel Vallontine , to whom a testimonial was presented on the occasion . The pre sentation was made in a feeling speech by Bro . S . V . Abraham ,

who occupied the chair . He referred to the great services rendered to the Lodge by Bro . Vallentine as its Preceptor , and said that tho members eagerly embraced tho opportunity of his approaching marriage to express to him , in a substantial form , their grateful appreciation of those services . Bro . Vallentino , who was cordially greeted , suitably acknowledged tho presentation , which consisted of a vory handsome aud massive bronze clock aud a pair of vases .

A mooting of the founders of the proposed new Warner Chapter ( No . 225 G ) was held on Monday , the 9 th inst ., at Bridge-chamb rs , Iloe-street , Walthamstow—Comp . William Shnrinnr P . Z . M . "Bismarck Iutime , " by a fellow student , which will be ready immediately at all the Libraries , will be a handsomely bound and well illustrated volume , bristling with moat interesting personal aud characteristic anecdotes of the private life of the great ex-Chancellor .

'Scenes through tho Battle Smoke" will bo another Library Volume , and is from the pen of tba Kev . Arthur Male , who doscriboH the thrilling scenes of the Afghan and Egyptian campaigns . The author served , as an army chaplain , throughout the whole of these

two wars , and most truthfully portrays in vivid pictures the many scenes in which he played an active part . The work will oontaiu immerous illustrations by Mr . Sitlnoy Paget , who served as military artist to the Illustrated London News during these expeditions .

"French Soldiers in German Prisons" is by another army chaplain , Canon Guers , and will form an important contribution to the history of the Franco-Prussian War .
