THE NEXT BENEVOLENT FESTIVAL .
IT is with the greatest satisfaction we are able to * announce that the Deputy Grand Master of England the Right Hon . the Earl of Warwick Prov G . M . Essex has consented to preside at the Anniversary
Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , to be held in February next . It was at the annual meeting of his Provincial Grand Lodge , held at Clacton-on-Sea on Tuesday , that Lord Warwick made
the gratif ying announcement , and he then appealed to the members of the Province over which he presides to loyall y support him on the occasion , an invitation
which was so enthusiasticall y received as to augur well for the success of this project on behalf of the Fund of the ; English Craft which provides Annuities for Aged Freemasons and their Widows .
It is worthy of record that this will be the first occasion in the history of the Institution—58 yearsthat a Masonic ruler of Essex has presided . at one of its Festivals , and this fact should prove an additional
incentive for energetic working by the Brethren of the county in support of their chief in the laudable undertaking he has set himself ; and so convinced are we that this will prove to be - the case that we
confidentl y predict an exceptional return from the Province of Essex in particular , while the high position occupied by the Earl of Warwick as Deputy Grand
Master of England , should ensure him a more than usually gratifying result from the Craft throughout the country in general .
The Benevolent Institution occupies a peculiar position amon g the Charitable Institutions of English Freemasonry , and although Brethren are loth to make any comparisons between the three Funds , there are
few but admit the claims of old people in distress are more pressing than those of children who are parentless , and even sometimes without a single relative to give them a start in life ; for in the case of the younger
generation the nation steps in and at least sees them educated ; but it can do nothing for the Aged Brother or his Widow , unless they throw themselves on the rates , and become actual paupers .
At the present time the Institution has a family of nearl y five hundred old people receiving quarterly sums which certainl y provide them with the necessaries of life , if not a few of its luxuries—210 Aged Brethren
receive £ 40 a year each , 250 Widows get £ 32 a year each , and 28 other Widows are in receipt of half their late husband ' s annuity , the cash outlay under these heads coming to ^ 17 016 each year . It is to provide
, this sum , and to enable the Committee to continue the good work , that the Earl of Warwick has promised to preside at next year ' s Festival , which we hope will
prove a successful one—creditable alike to the worth y Brother who has promised to preside , his important Province of Essex , and the hi gh position he occupies in the Craft as Deputy Grand Master of England ,

KIRBY LODGE . c ~ 1 1 HE Consecration of this new Lodge took place on Monday , gth inst ., and was a " superlative success . " The Lodge originated in the Kirby Lodge of Instruction ,
one of the most influential and successful Lodges of Instruction in the metropolis , a Lodge that has trained some of the most expert workers at the Emulation Lodge of Improvement , for which University of the Craft it has long been regarded as the preparatory School .
The main idea guiding the Brethren responsible for the launching of this new Lodge has been that each Founder should have already proved himself an accurate worker of
our ceremonies , so that the Lodge starts on its career in the unique position of having the certainty , for many years to . come , of there being in the various Offices Brethren as expert in the working of our ritual as can be found in the Craft .
The pre-eminent name amongst the Founders is naturally the first Worshipful Master , and the Brethren had the great satisfaction of placing in that honoured position Sir Forrest Fulton , LL . B ., Q . C ., Recorder of London , himself a member of the Kirby Lodge of Instruction , where he had been accustomed to attend for the practice of the ceremonies a few years ago .
