miring the excellent working of the new W . M . Tho report of the audit meeting -was read aud accepted . Tho Lodge was closed in perfect harmony ; the brethren , numbering 80 , then adjourned to tbe banquetting hall , which bad beeu tastefully decorated , under the guidance of Bro . John Satehell , who waa generally complimented for
hia taste , and a vote of thanks was unanimously recorded to hint . Tho usual Loyal and Masonic toasts wero proposed aud responded to . Visitors : —Bros . E . Davies P . M . Secretary of ii-3 , Wyman 188 , and Newnham 162-1 . Each responded to tho toast proposed in their honour . Tho banquet was most creditably served , and tho brethren left at a lato hour , having spent it most comfortable Masonio evening .
Domatie Lodgo of Instruction , No . 177- —A meeting was hold on Tuesday , the 18 th inst ., at the Surrey Masonic Hall , S . E . Bros . T . E . Walkor W . M ., Boyes S . W ., Bryant J . W ., Smith S . D ., Thorpe J . D ., Hicks I . G ., Larlham Preceptor aud Treasurer , Smith Secretary pro tem , and other brethreu . Tho questions for raising
were answered . The Lodgo was opened iu tho third degree aud the ceremony of raising was duly rehearsed , Bro . Maidment being the candidate . Tho Lodge was closed down to the first degree . Tho S . W . was elected W . M . for ensuing week , aud tho Lodge was closed .
Tranquillity Lodge , No . 185 . —Thoro could scarcely havo been devised a moro appropriate programme than that by which the proceedings were regulated at the meeting of tho above Lodgo , which took place at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham-street , on Monday , tbo 17 th instant . Tho recent death of the sincerely beloved Bro . John Peartree P . M ., who had been connected with the Lodgo for upwards
of a quarter of a century , and held the post of Hon . Treas . for the last eighteen years , caused tho brethren to appear with the usual tokens of Masonic mourning , and also to dispense with tho gay and glittering regiilia usually seen npon tho breasts of many of the Past Masters . Happily , thero was no ceremonial work , else a newly-initiated might have carried away a somewhat sornbio impression of tho entrance
to his Masonic career . Bro . Goorgo S . Paie W . M ., having opened the Lodge , caused the minutes to be road , which were confirmed . From theso it appeared that the sum of £ 100 had a . uain been added to tho Benevolent Fund . Bro . S . Solomon P . M . next proposed a vote of condolence to tho widow and family of the lato Treasurer , and in a speech full of genuine feeling dilated upon the excellent qualities
which distinguished tho departed Brother ; his disinterested kindness and urbanity , his benevolent instincts , and tho unwearying solicitude for tho prosperity of the Lodge which characterised his conduct . The vote was , of course , unanimously agreed to , and tho Secretary ordered to communicate the same to tho widow . Tho Lodge was then closed and adjourned . A really frugal , yet ample supper , was served ,
snch as even the balance sheet brigade would scarcely object to , aud with which it must be stated every ouo present was thoroughly satisfied , because the simpleuessof the repast precluded tho anticipation of broken rest , disordered stomachs , next morning ' s headache , and consequent general seediness , which follows in a greater or lesser degree the partaking of a sumptuous aud luxurious ban . net . Wines
wore entirely dispensed with , and , like staid and sober citizens , the brethren smoked anil limited over a , fjhiss of ale or grog . The toasts were confined to but to two -thu fiist , " Loyalty to throne , aud Prosperity to tho Craft , " which is supposed to include tho Loyal and Masonic toasts ; the second was that of the Visitors , of whom but five wero present , namely , Bros . Henry De Solla , John Culver , James
Bad John ltexwoithy , and John Piggott . The next proceedings might with propriety bo termed a vocal and musical entertainment , from which nearly everything likely to cause hilarity waa neatly and spontaneously excluded . Without the least desire or intention to depreciate tho musical taste and talent of any one whose exertions contributed in any measure to chase away the gloom of the former portion of the
evening , Bro . De Solla ' s performances take the first rank . His pathetic and quaint songs wero highly appreciated , and a pianoforte flolo ( " Trovatore " ) was vociferously applauded . Bro . J . Itoxwortb y reo . ived his fair sharo of praise , and indeed the vocal efforts of Bros . Child , John H . Ross , John Constable , Bailey , Staloy , aud Culver gave universal satisfaction . Special mention must deservedl y bo mado of
Bro . J . D . Barnett , whose versatile capabilities gave him full employment throughout , tho evening . Except Bro . De Solla , who does not require it ; and Bro . Child , who objected to it for reasons of his own , the rest of the vocalists had brought their music , and in nearly all instances Bro . Barnett was called upon to play the accompaniment to each , and also to accede to the request to oblige with some choice
songs from his repertoire . Although , no donbt inadvertently , public recognition of his services was not rendered , ho received hearty t ianks privately from many who had the opportunity of doinn- go . Altogether we never remember any Masonio gathering , during our experience of nearly twenty years , in which so much ability was displayed ( unprofessional ) by members of any Lougo . Great praise
is also due to the W . M . for the fitness and suitability of the whole arrangement , as it was consistent with a due sense of respect , to the memory of ono whose loss the Lodge has every reason so deeply to deplore . Besides numerous brethren and visitors , thero were present —Bros . Bailoy S . W ., Croaker J . W ., P . Levy Sec , Bush S . D ., Staloy I . G . ; Past Masttrs J . Constable , J . Boss , 8 , Solomon , S . Moss , Bloomfieid , Gluckstein , and E . Gottheil .
