— : o : — GREY FRIARS LODGE , No . 1101 . A REGULAR meeting took place at the Masonio Hall , Reading , on Wednesday , 13 th June . Bros . Richard Dowsett W . M ., E . J . Blackwell I . P . M ., VV . Ferguson P . M . acting S . W ., J . H . Hawkes J . W ., Ivey P . M . Secretary , Priokett S . D ., Ravenacrott J . D ., Hickie Org ., Cordrey M . C ., the Seoretary acting as I . G ,, Ileuimings Tyler . Bros . Slaughter , Whitfield , Sparrow , Greeuuway , Bennett , Brighatn . Many others were expected , bnt inst before commencing the business a
heavy thunderstorm prevented several Officers , members , and visitors from attending . Lodge was opened , and the minutes of the last regular meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was taken for Mr . William Morris , of Barnsbury Park , London , who was declared to be approved . Mr . Oliver Egginton , approved at the last regular Lodge , was duly initiated into the mysteries aud privileges of
ancient Freemasonry . The ceremony was admirably performed by the W . M ., who also gave the charge in the first degree , in emtenso . In the absence of the S . W ., who was unavoidably abroad , on account of domestic illness , the I . P . M ., iu conformity with a notice of motion at the last regular Lodge , proposed , that the sum of ten guineas from the funds of the Lodge be applied to the assistance of
the widow and children of a late brother , who were left in destitute circumstances ; this was seconded by Bro . Ferguson , and carried unanimously . Bro . Stransom was re-nominated as Treasnrer for the ensuing year . The W . M . explained the cause of hia absence at the last meeting ( he beiDg Steward at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls ) , and gave an interesting account
of the internal working ot that admirable Institution ; at its close proposing that the ten guineas voted by the Lodge should be paid in the name of the Treasurer of the Lodge for the time being , and that the five guineas voted by the Prov . Grand Lodge of Berks and Bucks should be paid in the name of the Secretary of the Lodge for the time being . This was agreed to . The forms of application to the Lodge of
Benevolence for a grant to the widow of a brother were signed by the members present . All business being ended , the Lodge was closed according to antient form , and adjourned to the second Wednesday in October . We congratulate Bro . Dowsett upon the admirable working of the Lodge , both as regards himself and his Officers . The brethren retired for refreshment to the Ship Hotel , where an
excellent cold collation was provided by Bro . Bailey , the toasts of the evening being the Initiate and the W . M ., both of which were suitably responded to . The subject of a summer trip was fully discussed , and a committee formed to carry out the arrangements , there being on this occasion a deBire to go to Virginia Water , but final arrangements will be made in the course of a week or ten days .

as candidate ; the ceremony included the traditional history . Bro . Lorkin worked the third section of the lecture , assisted by the brethren . Lodge was olosed to the first degree , when Bro . Lorkin worked the first section of that lecture , assisted by the brethren . Brother 0 . Weeden was appointed to preside at tbe next meeting .

Lorkin , the Treasurer of this Lodge of Instruction , will rehearse the ceremony of installation , on Saturday next , the 30 th inst ., that being the last meeting before the recess , which takes place during the months of July and August . The firth Friday , the 29 th inst ., is the date appointed for rehearsal of the installation ceremony , Bro . Stevens , the Preceptor , officiates as Installing Master , aud not the 22 nd , as named iu error in our last week ' s notice .

Daring the proceedings , the brethren of the Metropolitan Lodge of Instruction , No . 1507 , paid a visit , and received a cordial greetiug at the hands of the brethren aud Preceptor of this Lodge . The sincere aud kiud feeling existing between thp members of the two Lodges is demonstrated by the fact that several members co-operate in assisting tho Secretaries to make the
numbers as large as possible at these visits ( this beiug a return visic paid by the brethren of tho Now Concord Lod ^ o t <> the Me tropolitan in April last ) , aui by coming from distant parts , and at somo personal inconvenience . Long may this brotherly lovo continue , and surve to strengthen that bond of affection existing in Masonry , if strength there need bo . Several brethren were elected members , and Bro .
bnuth was appointed to fill the chair at the next meetiug . Business being over , Lodge was adjourned in the customary manner until Wednesday , 27 tli June . The brethren afterwards spent a social hour , when well chosen recitations and songs enlivened the proceedings , Bro . P . M . Cusworth acting as President . Sucoess to each

George Lambert J . W ., D . M . Dewar Treasurer and Secretary , Rev A . W . Hall Chaplain , Herbert Dicketts S . D ., Robert Berridgel . fi . ' R . L . Loveland Stewards ; C F . Matier D . G . M ., James Ing I is , ' E . Sweny , R . P . Spice , H . J . Parsons , James Pinder , F . W . Driver
A . J ) . trodson , W . Body Date , and others . Lodge opened in the Order of St . Laurence the Martyr , and that degree was conferred on Bros . A . Ferguson , Johu Livingston , M . D ., Thomas Lamb Smith , W Prince , and John Brittain . The degrees of Knight of Constantinople , " Red Cross of Babylon , and High Priest , were afterwards oonforreH nn
the brethren entitled to receive them , the last degree being only granted to present and past Principals of the Holy Royal Arch . A P . M . ' s jewel was unanimously voted to Bro . Williams , and ' the brethren afterwards dined together at the Holborn Restaurant . The installation of Bro . Roy as W . M ., and the Annual Festival ' of the Metropolitan Council , will be held at the Mitre Hotel , Hampton Court , on Saturday , 11 th August .
CITT IMPROVEMENTS . —The impending demolition of the Charter , house , and the laying-out of the site for building upon , was tbe subject of conversation at the last meeting for the season of the London and Middlesex Archteological Society , which has just been held , -when Bro . George Lambert , F . S . A ., read an interesting paper " On the Early History of the Foundiug of the Charterhouse . " In the discus .
sion which followed , in which several speakers took part , Bro . Wal - ford , as an old Carthusian , observed that it wus now in contemplation to remove the Hospital and the Poor Brethren to the same neighbour , hood as the School at Godalminsr , and he thought he expressed the opinion of many of his old schoolfellows , who were neither Radicals nor Revolutionists , when he said that they would like to see the institn .

The existing hall was substantially the same , under some disgnise , as the hall of the monastery , and the chapel was not materially altered . Lambert , at the close of tbe debate , said he had reason to believe that before long the Charterhouse would be removed , and the site , which was a very valuable one , situated in the midst of a very thickly . populated and busy neighbourhood , sold for building purposes . Report said that great alterations had of late taken place iu connection with tbe Charterhouse , and that there were not so many
Poor Brethren in residence there as formerly . If , however , the buildings wore to he destroyed , he thought that the marvellous cbimney-pieco of tho hall should at any rate be preserved . It was nraed by some of tho speakers that the old buildings should , if pos . sible , be preserved , and turned to good acconnt as they are . The annual City meeting of tho society is to be held in Goldsmiths' Hall dnring the prosent month .
