WELL MERITED PREFERMENT .
WE have much pleasure in tendering our hearty congratulations to Brother William Lake P . M . P . Prov . G . Eeg . Cornwall , Editor of our contemporary , the " Freemason , " who has been appointed Chief Clerk
in Grand Secretary ' s office , on the resignation , through ill health , of Bro . Alfred A . Pendlebury Assistant Grand Secretary , to whom we tender our sympathy on hearing that his state of health necessitates his withdrawal from
the hope that he may be spared for very many years ^ o enjoy the retiring allowance he will doubtless receive from the Craft , and which it is recommended shall amount to £ 400 per annum . Brother Lake is specially to be congratulated on
this appointment , the more so because it is so richly deserved , and , from our point of view , it is particularly gratifying , because it must be regarded as a well merited reward earned by a worker in the field of Masonic
journalism . During the whole period of Brother Lake 8 association with our contemporary we have enjoyed his friendship , but even if it were not so it would be very difficult to point to a single action on his part calling for condemnation . He has been a zealous and consistent
active service ; but at the same time we couple with it
supporter of all that is held in repute in Freemasonry , and as a result it is safe to say he has won as large a circle of friends in London Masonic circles as is enjoyed by any Brother in our midst . We have no fear of his
capability to discharge the new duties he is starting upon , and shall be much surprised if he does not fully justify the choice made by the executive of Grand Lodge in his behalf , not only retaining the respect of the many Masonic friends he already has , but making many more as his new duties take him into fresh fields of labour .
As a Journalist Bro . Lake will take to his new duties the congratulations of the numerous press friends he h $ s secured during the long period of his connection with the " Freemason" by the geniality of his disposition , his
devotion to his employer ' s interests , and his efforts on behalf of the journal whose destinies he governed , in fact we may say all will hail with joy his acquisition of a
well deserved prize . It has already been suggested that he should receive a testimonial from those with whom he has been associated for so many years , but in regard to this , comment is , perhaps , yet premature .
What do my Masonic friends think of this little gem , culled from a criticism of the Craft by a Plymouth priest named Father Bridgetfc , asks " Amicus , " in tho " Blackburn Standard " : — " For Catholics the matter is settled by authority . Our Lord said to Saint Peter , ' Feed my sheep ! ' We believe that the Pope has this charge and is guided in its performance . Successive Popes , for 150 years ,
have denounced Freemasonry , and refused the Sacraments , even at death , to those who will not renounce it . If it was an innocent thing , this would be the most wicked injustice and impiety . Therefore , if I could find no reason for the prohibition of it , yet , as a docile sheep , I should obey , and believe that my shepherd had good reasons to bid me avoid that pasturage . "
o o o A recent number of the " Daily Chronicle " had an interesting chat on Cassell's " Popular Educator , " which is justly described as the pioneer of popular instruction , and has undoubtedly been one of the educational forces of the country . We understand the familiar work is about to be re-issued , with its many attractive features revised up to date .
o o o Mr . Edwin Fox ( of the Firm of Messrs Edwin Fox and Bousfield ) has been elected a Director of fche Accident Insurance Company Ltd ., St . Swithins House , St . Swithins Lane .
