BAUXEBS—London and County Bank ( Covent-garden Branch ) . ACTUABY AHD MAKAGEE—John Messent , F . I . A . Offices—429 Strand , London . The primary object of this Company is the creation of a New Series of the BRITON MEDICAL and GENERAL LIFE ASSOCIATION upon a perfectly independent basis , and entirely free from any of tho existing liabilities or engagements of the parent Institution , which , though continuing on its present

basis , will devote its more immediate attention to its existing contracts and the profitable investment of its funds . THE BRITON MEDICAL and GENERAL LIFE ASSOCIATION had on the 31 st December last upwards of 26 , 000 existing policies , assuring the sum of £ 7 , 3 G 2 , 183 , producing an annual income of £ 222 , 335 . Its net assets amounted to £ 659 , 305 , exclusive of its large uncalled capital . It has been determined , on the highest actuarial advice , to continue this

large business as an independent First Series , and to create a Second Series , in the form of a new Company , with a distinct capital for fresh policy-holders . Tho creation of a New Series is not a novel idea . It has been adopted by some of the largest and most successful Assurance Companies , and in tho present instance it can be moro effectually established by means of a new Company , wh ' ch , having the benefit of an existing organization of over 2 , 000 agencies in perfect working order , will commence operations with advantages never before

enjoyed by any similar institution . The new Company will , under special agreement , undertake tho collection of the income of the old society at a fixed scale of commission , and will have tho privilege of working all its well-established branches , agencies , and other valuable connections . Tho value of these will bo best appreciated by the fact that the old association has transacted nearly , if not quite , the largest business of any kindred institution of tho same age . In the ten years ended 31 st

December 1873 , the new annual premiums amounted to an average of £ 21 , 698 per annum . Henco the prospects of the now Company are exceptionally encouraging , and offer inducements for the investment of capital seldom to be mot with . It will be able at once to command a largo and lucrative business without incurring tho heavy outlay usually inseparable from tho formation and development of similar institutions . The Directors have caused full estimates to he made as to every point of this

scheme , and havo submitted tho details to four actuaries of the highest eminence , viz ., Mr . C . J . Bunyon , M . A ., Actuary of tho Norwich Union Life Insurance Society ; Mr . A . H . Bailey , F . I . A ., Actuary of the London Assurance Corporation ; Mr . Marcus N . Adler , M . A ., F . I . A ., Actuary of the Alliance Insurance Company ; and Mr . Arthur Pearson , F . I . A ., Actuary of the Metropolitan Life Assurance Society ( whoso report , together with the special valuation of the Old Series Company , which has been independently checked

by Dr . W . Fair , F . R . S ., ot tho Register Ofhce , Somerset House , and Mr . Geo . Humphreys , M . A , of tho Eagle Insurance Company , may bo had on application ) . Persons taking 100 shares or upwards may pay 10 s on appplication , and 10 s by two instalments of 5 s each , at intervals of threo months ; and persons taking 600 shares or upwards may pay 5 s on application , and tho balance by three instalments of 5 s each , at similar intervals . Share warrants payable to bearer

will also be issued . B jA large portion of the first issue of capital has already been taken up by the Directors and their friends , and tho remainder is now offered , in tho first place to the shareholders and policy-holders of the old Company , and next to tho public generally , to whom the Directors confidently recommend the investment

as one ot an unusually promising nature . The Memorandum and Articled of Association may be seen at the Registered Offices of the Company as above . Forms of Application for Shares may be obtained from any of the District Managers or Agents of the Company , the Broker , or direct from the Company ' s Chief Office , 429 Strand , or its City Branch , 21 Cornhill .

No APPEAL TO THE LODGE PUOM DECISION OP THE MASTER . —It is well known Masonic law that the decision of the Master cannot be appealed from to tho Lodge ; it can only be taken to the Grand Master or the Grand Lodge . Why this is so , however , is not so well understood , and we give the view of Bro . ALBERT PIKE on the subject , and believe in its correctness . Tho origin of such law had its

existence in the fact that , anciently , Lodges were composed of apprentices and craftsmen , and the Master being a Master Mason , the same rule which prevailed in Operative Masonry was carried into the Speculative organization , viz .: The workmen could not appeal from the decisions of the overseer or master of the work , for he alone was responsible for tho designs laid down on the " trestle board . " So in our present system , although Master Masons compose the Lodge , the

ancient law still prevails , for the Master is now responsible only to the Grand Lodge or Grand Master . From this rule of supremacy by the Master , he can call the Lodge together at pleasure , and close the same at will , and it cannot be adjourned by vote of the members ; he can also close debate when unnecessarily protracted , and the " previous question" cannot be called for by any member . It is a wise provision for the preservation of harmony and to expedite business . GEO . FRANK GOULEY .
