CRIPPLEGATE LODGE , No . 1613 ,
THE distinguishing feature at the regular meeting , held on the 16 th inst ., and which will , no doubt , constitute one of the red letter days in the history of the Lodge , was the visit of one of its honorary members , the Right Hon . the Lord Mayor . The Lodge has its usual quarters at the Albion , Aldersgate-street , E . G ., and there the brethren assembled , under the presidentship of Bro . William Medwin
W . M ., who , with the assistance of his Wardens and the rest of tho Officers , disposed of tbe nsual business , which included one raising and two initiations . From an nnforseen circumstance the large banqetting room of the Albion was not available on that special evening : it was therefore necessary to seek accommodation elsewhere . But , as it was deemed fitting to receive the honoured guest in state , ancl
with proper regalia and personal decorations , a dispensation from the Grand Master had to be obtained to enable the brethren to display their Craft and other adornments outside their own " valley of Jehosbaphat . " The work of the Lodge being over , the brethren adjourned to the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham-street , E . G ., where a largo reception room had been prepared . Ifc was a brave sight to see tho
brethren ranged aronnd the room , the W . Master and Wardens at the upper end , and the Deacons , with their wands of office , at tho entrance , ready to receive the expected guest , who , with accustomed punctuality ( a well-known characteristic of his Lordship in the Ward of Cripplegate ) , made his appearance at the appointed time , and was conducted , amidst acclamations , to the loft of the W . M . After hearty
salutations , the brethren proceeded to partake of a luxurious banquet , where a commendable moderation in the matter of exciting fluids was noticeable . After grace , the W . M . gave the health of the Queen and Craft , and tbe professional party present , which consisted of Bros . W . Sexton , G . T . Carter , J . Kempton , W . Winn , under the direction of Fred H . Cozens , sang the National Anthem . The health of tho
M . W . Grand Master H . R . H . tbe Prince of Wales was heartily responded to . Bro . J . R . Foulger , Past Master and Secretary , proposed the toast of the Pro Grand Master , Deputy G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , than whom , he thought , none were more energetic in their zeal for the best interests of the Craft , and none more willing to assist when difficulty arises . He would couple
with the toast their highly esteemed Grand Secretary Brother Colonel Shadwell Gierke . The Grand Secretary expressed bis sincere thanks for the kindly and fraternal way this toast was received , on the present and all similar occasions . The Grand Officers always endeavoured to perform their duties as efficiently as possible , but had not yet arrived at a Mnsonic millennium . It was impossible , even
with the best will , to satisfy everybody . There were many brethren not altogether unworthy of some recognition for their services , but the fact was , the Grand Master had , comparatively , few favours to bestow . He could assure tbein that the future conduct of the Grand Officers would be regulated by tho pasfc . He was hi ghly gratified to be present on that auspicious occasion , and was proud to
have been invited to meet at that Masonic board the chief magistrate of the greatest city in the world , who was also an old and respected P . M . f f the Craft . The W . M . next proposed the health of Brother tho Right Hon . tho Lord Mayor who was so well known in Cripplegate as to need no eulogy from him . Tho Lodge congratulated himon hia accession to the highest dignity it was in the power of his fellow
citizens to bestow . Bro . the Lord Mayor , who was received with long and continued cheering , said he rose with great pleasure to respond to the toast . It was a source of unfeigned gratification to meet tbe brethren of the Cripplegate Ward , who for many years past had shown a perfectly sincere esteem and kindness to him . The Cripplegate Lodge had always his special regard . When started he was invited to be the first Master . lie always regretted to have
been unable to accept the highly-prized offer . Bufc thoy would probably recollect that just abont that lime he was Sheriff ' , and what with other duties , besides being Master of another Lodge , he felt unequal to accept the responsibility . Thry had paid him the compliment of electing him an honorary member , and in all his visits ho had been extremely gratified with the careful way in which the work ol tho Lodge was conducted . Tho example set by their illustrious Grand Master showed them that they ought to be guided iu all things by tho great Masonic principle of doing as thoy wonld be done by , and to regard every man ns a brother . Referring to his exalted office , he was proud to occupy tho position of Lord Mayor , for which he was deeply indebted to his fellow citizens and brother Freemasons , with whom he bad been
associated during a tolerably long commercial life . When his health was so kindly proposed nnd heartily received , he conld only assure them that his best energies would always be devoted to their service . The Lord Mayor then proposed the health of tho Worshipful Master , remarking that be had bad the pleasure of his acquaintance for a quarter of a centnry , and always found him a good neighbonr , and
a straightforward man of business . The Worshipful Master briefl y acknowledged the compliment . The toast of the Visitors was responded to by Bros . Coombs and Wright . For the Past Masters Brother J . It . Foulger replied , remarking that Cripplegate Ward had produced Lord Mayors before , notably Sir Matthew Wood , who twice occupied fche high office , and what reason can be urged against their
honoured Alderman being again elected . Brother B . Groner P . M ., to whom tbe toast of tbe Charities hacl been entrusted , said that Bro . Wildey Wright , iu his response for the Visitors , poetically illustrated the great principles of Freemasonry , and glorious heritage of tho jiast , imposing the dnty of perpetuating , the Charitable Institutions . The Cripplegate Lodge , be was glad to say , had done all in its power iu
that direction . The Worshipful Master , taking upon himself the duty of acting as Steward at the coming Festival of the Benevolent Institution , the Lodge immediately voted £ 21 on his list . The same had been done previously , and be remembered when tbe first Worshipful Master announced his intention of representing the Lodge in a similar capacity , in about three months the sum of £ 50 waa subscribed
by fche brethren . The Lodge being only six years old , he though !; ib had nofc failed in doing its duty . He would call upon Brother Terry , who he knew had all the facts and figures afc his fingers' end , to respond to the toast . Brother Terry , in his accustomed forcible and elegant manner , advocated the claims of all the Charities , but as a matter of course dwelt more especially upon the Institution which is dependent upon the zeal , energy , nnd
devotion which ho so lavishly bestows . The Tyler ' s toasfc ended the proceedings . The Visitors numbered fifty-six , among whom were the Right Hon . tbe Lord Mayor ( Alderman Knight ) , Colonel Shadwell Gierke Grand Secretary , Buss A . G . S ., Jas . Terry Seo . B . I ., J .
