gested , " tho result of' pique' and party feeling ; " but be tho act , or the cause of tho act what it may , it strikes one as being most undesirable for him , or any ono in his position , to press tho mattor still fnrthor . Any slig ht advantage in tho war of words haa been gained by him . He can afc least claim to havo acted consistently throughout , while the same cannot be said of Grand Lodge . Nor in what he has written
or said has he exceeded the just limits of well-found and temperato argument . As to tho suggestion that tho motion was agreed to in a thin house , and tho minute rejected in a crowded one , it seems to me to have been benoath the dignity of "A P . G . CHAPLAIN" to havo adopted it , for , as Bro . Stevens very portinently asks , "What would become of our mosfc useful Grand Lodgo decisions , " if tho
measure of their value wero to be judged by tho numerical strength of the meetings at which thoy wore passed ? There is yet another point to be recorded . Thero is . no doubt , a certain amount of justification for tho chargo against Bro . Stevens that his attention has been directed to matters of detail . The questions ho from timo to timo submitted for consideration in your columns
dealt chiefly with verbal differences , and I am not snrprised that many shonld havo thought the reconciliation of these differences was tho solo aim ho had in view . But his motion of 1869-70 covered a larger extent of ground , and pressod for a Committee of Past Masters " to inquire into tho merits of the respective systems of working now in practice , and to report to Grand Lodgo thereon , with such
recommendations as they may think necessary to prevent deviation from the established mode , such deviations being , according to tho Constitutions of Freemasonry , improper , and not to be justified or countenanced . " None , therefore , are to blame for supposing that Bro . Stevens ' late motion in Grand Lodge , and the discussions ho set going in your columns , followed as the latter wero by their republication in book
form , had something in common between them . However , what ideas may have been formed by others is comparatively of small moment . The alternatives to be faced are ( 1 ) Will Bro . Stevens bo wise in pressing the matter still further , or even proposing to Grand Lodge , " that the law it enacted in 1869-70 bo absolutely cancelled ? " or ( 2 ) will it be moro satisfactory for him to leave things as they are ,
contenting himself with bringing under tho notice of Grand Lodge such prominent deviations from established practice as have come nnder hi 3 notice ; such , for instance , as that mentioned by Bos ALBUS in a recent number of your Masonic contemporary , and referred to by a correspondent of yours shortly after—I think in the week ended
13 th instant ? I fancy the latter will be the better course . Bro . Stevens will show his dosiro to keep the peace of Freemasonry undisturbed , whilo , by specifying tho deviations he has mot with in the course of his experience , he will afford the best justification in his powor for the motions ho brought forward in 1 S 69-70 and recently . Fraternally and traly yours , B . and C .
MASONIO DESIGNATIONS .
To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIB AND BROTHER , —Like yonr correspondent "CrwiER , " I have noticed the prevalent mode of complimenting our military brethren with a title more , to my thinking , in keeping with their calling in life than with Masonry as a social luxury . I do not deem the fashion an innovation , but as extreme laudation . Ten years ia a
short period of time to look back upon , but what changes may , and ofttimes do , overcome us within that limited space ? In 1870 the Committees of the various Masonic Charitable Institutions were iidallized by the then perpetual Chairman ; in the current year the Chairman idolized by the Committees . Times change , and we conform to the alteration . I am , Dear Sir and Brother , Yours fraternally ,
