History Of R.A. Masonry In The Province Of Lincolnshire.
HISTORY OF R . A . MASONRY IN THE PROVINCE OF LINCOLNSHIRE .
COMPILE ? FEOM VABIOTJS SOURCES BY COMP . F . D . MARSDEN , P . G . S . E .
THE earliest records of Royal Aroh Masonry in Lincolnshire are those of the Chapter Concord , held in the City of Lincoln , and attached to the Witham Lodge ( present No . 297 ) , and of Sfc . Botolph ' s Chapter attached to the Harmony Lodge , No . 272 . The Chapter of St . Botolph was first convened Mav . 15 , 1807 , an old minute book of that date being : still in existence . Very little , how .
ever is to be fonnd relating to P . G . Chapter , excepting certain entries confirming the records of the Chapter of Concord given below . The Chapter of Concord was founded Aug . 21 st , 1808 , and was held eontinoonsiy from 1808 to 1859 inclnsive . Unfortunately , however , the old Charter has been lost , as also the Minutes prior to Jnly , 1835 . It is probable that these Minntes ( from July , 1835 ) , and the
Register Book of the Chapter of Concord dating from 1808 , are the only existing records from whioh any information may be gleaned respecting the Provincial Grand Chapters constituted in Lincolnshire prior to 1875 . A carefnl search of these books has , therefore , been made by the P . G . Eegistrar ( Comp . T . C . Lazenby , J . 297 ) , and the following are the various references to P . G . Chapters which appear therein .
Extracts from old Begister and Minute Books , Chapter of Concord , 297 , Lincoln . 1822 . May 12 th . " Rev . Matthew Barnett , recommended as P . G . Supt . " It appears from tbe reference in tbe petition ( vide below ) recommending Dr . Oliver , that this Companion was appointed P . G . Snpfc .,
but as his name does not appear as a member of the Chapter of Concord , Lincoln , it is probable ho was a member of one * of the other two Chapters in the Province . 1843 . At a Chapter held Sept . 15 tb . it was proposed and agreed to ' That the thanks of the Chapter be given to the M . E . Z . for the trouble bestowed and diligence employed in investigating the
signatures affixed to the Petition for a Chapter to be held at Boston . " "That the many irregularities thereby brought to li g ht render it imperative to apply for the controlling authority of a P . G , Superintendent . " " That tbe Principals of this Chapter be reqnested to present ft respectful petition to the M . E . Pro Grand Z . tbe Earl of Zetland ,
soliciting him to make snch appointment , and suggesting to him the name of tbe M . E . Comp . the Rev . George Oliver , D . D ,, pastZ ., as most fitting for the office . " 1844 . Feb . 22 . The following Memorial was accordingly forwarded to W . H . White , Esq ., Grand Scribe E ., for presentation to the Earl of
Zetland . " To the most Excellent the Earl of Zetland , Pro Grand First Principal of the Supreme Grand Chapter of R . A . Masons of England . " We , the Principals anrl Companions of the Chapter of Concord , No . 374 , attached to the Warrant of the Witham Lodge of Freemason s
