ALBERT VICTOR LODGE , No . 1778 . THE regular meeting was held at the Town Hall , Pendleton , on Friday , 20 th inst ., Bro . Wm . Thos . Blease W . M . Drew 1134 , W . Binns 1134 .
Three ceremonies constituted the principal business of the evening , viz ., the initiation of Mr . William Statham , Builders' Merchant , Pendleton , into the mysteries and privileges of ancient Free-masonry ; and the passing to the degree of "P . O . of Bros . Bev . Wm . Goodman Edwards Bees , M . A ., and Charles Joshua Bower . The usual festive board followed .
URMSTON LODGE , No . 1730 . THE annual meeting and Festival of St . John took place at the Victoria Hotel , Urmston , on Saturday , 14 th inst ., Brother James Ormrod W . M ., and it was a most successful function in every way . The Brethren met at an early hour , and Lodge having been opened by the W . M ., the preliminary business was transacted and a Board of Installed Masters formed , Brother Edwd . L . Littler P . P . G . P . Treasurer occupying the S . W . ' s chair , Bro . J . H . Marsh Prov . G . S . D . that of J . W ., while Bro . John Bowers P . P . G . P . Org . acted as I . G ., and Bro . G . G . Mends as Deacon .
Bro . James Shaw Whitley S . W . was presented to receive the benefits of installation , and having satisfactorily answered the ancient constitutional questions , was duly placed in the principal chair , the ceremony of installation being performed in a most admirable manner by Bro . Orinrod . Following a now very general custom , the work had been assigned to various Past Masters , Bro . John Bowers presenting and explaining the working
tools of the first degree , while Bro . Littler undertook a similar duty with regard to those of the second and third degrees ; Bro . George A . Meyers P . Prov . Gr . D . C . delivered all the proclamations , the address to the newlyinstalled Master was given by Bro . Swindells , the one to the Wardens by Bro . T . W . Bone , while that to tbe Brethren generally was in the capable hands of Bro . W . Goodacre P . G . Swd . Br . Provincial Grand Secretary .
Bro . Whitley W . M . invested tbe Officers , as follow : Bros . Hedley Jones S . W ., A . Hawkins J . W ., K . L . Littler P . M . P . P . G . P . Treas ., G . B . Lloyd P . M . P . P . G . Tr . Sec , W . H . Ashworth S . D ., J . F . Mends J . D ., G . A . Myers P . M . P . P . G . D . C . D . C ., John Bowers P . M . P . P . G . P . Org ., A . Edwards I . G ., B . Appledore , J . Renshaw , W . Proudfoot , F . Taylor , and Beuben Cochrane Stewards , J . Slyman , J . P ., P . M . P . P . G . S . D . Char . Bep .
In explaining the Treasurer ' s jewel , and , by tbe way , this was the only one distinguished by a special description , for a specific reason whioh Bro . Goodacre gave , namely , that Bro . Littler , the first candidate in the Lodge had been initiated by himself ( the first Master ) , he further stated that the Urmston Lodge had this year attained its majority . We may mention that Bro . Littler has held office in the Lodge during the long period of twenty years without intermission , fourteen of which have been in the capacity of Treasurer .
Before the Lodge was closed , Bro . Goodacre remarked to the Brethren that it was only fair true merit should receive its due recognition , and it was with extreme pleasure that he congratulated Bro . Ormrod on the excellence of his ceremonial of that day . The Festival of St . John , which was truly of a recherche description , and equal to any of Bro . Past Master John Walton's previous efforts , was held in
the large banqueting room of the hotel , especially decorated for the occasion , over forty members and visitors taking part in the symposium . Loyal and Masonic toasts were pleasantly interspersed with songs , recitations , & c ., the contributaries being Bros . Marsh , Bowers , Littler , Jones , Henry Hall P . M . 1375 P . P . G . Tr ., Charles Shaw W . M . 1147 , Edward Boberts P . M . 1459 , and others .
Bro . Goodacre replied on behalf of the Grand Officers , and reverted in touching terms to the death of Earl Lathom , and also to that of his youngest daughter , Lady Edith Wilbraham , which latter had occurred a day or two previously . He said he fully sympathised with the succeeding Earl , who had recently attained the position of Provincial Grand Master-designate of West Lancashire , in succession to his deceased father , and believed that he would have the sympathy and loyal support of every Brother with whom he might come in contact .
Bros . J . H . Marsh and A . K . Boothroyd P . M . 1134 , & c , Prov . Gr . Std .. whose names had been specially coupled with the toast , responded to that of the Provincial Grand Officers , and gave some interesting details of Provincial work . Bro . Ormrod I . P . M . proposed the health of the Worshi pful Master , saying it was the toast of the evening . It had given him great pleasure to
instal Bro . Whitley , and the opportunity being afforded , he had readily availed himself of it . He was sure that the newly installed W . M . would not lack in management and interest , but would do credit to the Lodge . It was no light honour which he had accepted , and at the close of his period of office he hoped the members would not only realise his worth , but would be proud of his appointment .
Bro . Whitley W . M . responded , saying ho thanked the Brethren for the outburst of enthusiasm , but their reception of the toast had filled him with emotion . He -would endeavour to perform the duties of his high office satisfactorily , at the same time trying to maintain its dignity . The Lodge had attained its majority , and this was one ot the most important epochs in its existence , and the fact ought to be marked in some especial way , which
he hoped the members would afterwards determine . They had tbe father of the Lodge present ( Bro . Goodacre ) , who had treated them to some interesting speeches and a lot of good advice , and he sincerely hoped they would see him for many years to come . In conclusion Bro . . Whitley said the scene of that evening would be engraved on his memory as long as he lived . Bro . Whitley then proposed the health of the I . P . M ., and said he

approached this task feeling that it was an easier matter than the last . Bro . Ormrod had performed his duties in a manner whioh left nothing to be desired , and his work had called forth their , approbation . Several candidates had expressed themselves to the effect that they would never forget his deep impressiveness , and they who had seen his ceremony of that day must be convinced that he had discharged his duties with ability . The annual picnic and ball held during his year of office had been the most successful in
connection with the Lodge , and they were proud of the energy which he had always displayed . As W . M . he had been asked by the Lodge to present to him a Past Master's collar and very handsome gold jewel , by way of testifying to the esteem in which Bro . Ormrod was held , feeling sure that so long as the jewel adorned his breast he would wear it unsullied . The jewel bore this inscription : — Presented by the Brethren to
BRO . JAMES OBMBOD P . M ., as a mark of their esteem . Jan . 14 th , 1899 . Brother Ormrod I . P . M ., in responding , said it was not for him to judge
of the truth of the remarks uttered , but it was for him to accept them . With a very apt alliteration he said the speakers had been lavishly laudatory , but if he had fulfilled and carried out the duties of the Lodge he ought to be satisfied . Nobody ever reached the pinnacle of his own satisfaction . Other toasts followed .
Besides those already mentioned we noticed there were present Bros . John Walton jun . P . M ., Geo . Franklyn , W . Bowden P . M . 155 P . P . G . Beg ., I . B . E . Burkett W . M . 1375 , B . H . Ibbotson W . M . 1588 , Joseph Ward W . M . 2359 , W . Broughton P . M . 1345 D . C , Chas . F . Davies J . W . 1496 , H . G . Davies 1083 , 0 . G . Rowley 645 , and others .
CONCORD LODGE , No . 1534 . THE regular meeting was held at Chester Bank , Prestwick , on Thursday , 19 th inst ., Bro . Dr . F . Stephenson W . M . Walker to the sublime degree of M . M ., the W . M . undertaking this duty .
Succeeding these proceedings was fche festive board , when Loyal and Masonic toasts were relieved by songs , recitations , & c , given by Bros . W . T . Walker , Walter M . Symons , Edward Boberts P . M . 1459 , J . Stanley Derbyshire J . W . 1565 , Gilbert L . Hardcastle J . D . 1773 , and others .
EGERTON LODGE , No . 1030 . THE regular meeting was held at the George Hotel , Heaton Norris , on Monday , 16 th inst ., Bro . Dr . Charles Porter W . M . St . George Lodge , No . 1170 ; Alfred Boyd , formerly of the Imperial George Lodge , No . 78 ; and Mr . Aubrey Francis Seed , Manufacturer , Heaton Chapel , the former as joining members , and the latter as an initiate . The ceremony was performed by the W . M ., assisted by Bro . W . A . Bacon S . W ., who presented and explained the working tools , and Bro . J . B . Oldham J . W ., who delivered the address in the N . B .
Bros . J . Bell Martindale and Harold Halker Broome were passed to the degree of F . C , by Bros . W . H . Vaughan P . M . P . P . G . Beg ., and A . E . Broome I . P . LODGE OF FAITH , No . 581 . THE regular meeting was held at the Bradford Hotel , Mill Street , Manchester , on Wednesday , 18 th inst ., Bro . Charles H . Griffiths W . Ernest Whittaker , Licensed Victualler , Bradford
Hotel ; Charles Albert Toyn , Salesman , Openshaw ; Henry Bailey , Wholesale Fruiterer , Openshaw ; and John Lawton , Engineer , Openshaw . The first ceremony was performed by Bro . Robert Adshead I . P . M ., and the last by Bro . John Greenup P . M . D . C , the others falling to the lot of the W . M ., whilst Bro . Samuel Andrew J . W . presented and explained the working tools .
At the festive board which followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts were agreeably varied by songs , recitations , & c , the contributaries being Bros . Councillor Wm . T . Haworth W . M . 1166 , Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 , Geo . Thompson 2185 , and others .
Bro . Greenup , in proposing the health of the W . M ., alluded not only to his regular attendance , but also to the very excellent character of the work performed by him in every office which he had filled . His position as Master would add dignity and strength to the Lodge , and the Brethren would never regret having placed him in the principal ohair .
In responding , Bro . Griffiths W . M . spoke of the itinerant Masons , and warned the initiates against indiscriminate charity towards such as he instanced who bad recently made their appearance in the police courts , informing his auditors of the fact that there was a proper place where all genuine cases would unfailingly meet with prompt assistance .
Bro . Griffiths afterwards proposed the health of the newly initiated Brethren , saying that when he joined the Lodge it was in conjunction with three others , and such a circumstance had not beeu repeated until that day . He spoke very ebeeringly , advising the new members to act upon those principles which they had heard enunciated , and they would not only become true and useful members of society , but good members of the Faith Lodge ,
The initiates responded in very neat speeches . Bro . Toyn stated that he was much obliged to the Brethren for having admitted him among them , and felt lifted up in consequence . He fully realised tho step which he had taken that day would be one well worth remembering . Bro . Bailey said that previously to entering the Lodge he had no idea whatever of the seriousness and gravity of the obligations he would have to take , but felt assured it would be for the best . Bro .
