R . M . I . B . PENSIONS INDEMNITY FUND .
WE publish in another column a list of the amounts already paid in to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys' Pension Indemnity Fund , from which it will be seen that a total of £ 409 has been received . In addition to this amount a great many other sums have been voted , and doubtless , now that attention has been attracted to
the subject , many of theso will be paid in by the Treasurers of tho Lodges concerned during the next few days . These amounts , with others we know to be
forthcoming , give evidence that the proposal has the support and sympathy of a large body of the Craft . In reference to tho subject we extract the following from the Evening Neivs and Post of Wednesday : —
Tho proposal to commute tho pension to be voted fco Bro . F . Binckes , the Secretary of the Boys' School , is being misunderstood in various quarters . Bro . Binckes is fnlly entitled to recognition for his long services , and the question arises how much shall his pension amount to ? To relieve tho Institution of any responsibility on this subject ,
it was proposed that each Lodge in the Kingdom be asked to subscribe a sum to a " commutation " fund . A distinguished Mason at once came forward and offered his cheque for the fall amount required , and said he was content to wait for repayment until the Craft voted the money . This kind offer put an end to one or two difficulties whioh
presented themselves , bufc it has given rise to others . For instance , at a Lodge meeting in the Provinces , when the proposal came forward to vote £ 2 10 s from the funds to the commutation account , some strong remarks were made , and it was ultimately agreed that the Lodgo , while regretting the necessity for raising tho sum , resolves
to contribute its proportion , the amount to be raised oy the voluntary subscriptions of tho brethren . Wo very mnch question if subscriptions aro required for this fund in any such spirit as is hero manifest . Tho Institntion is fully prepared fco meet its own liabilities , but when a kind offer is made to relieve the general
funds , it is of course fully appreciated , but nofc if tho money is fco bo wrung from the Lodges , as appears to have been attempted in the case in point . We know sufficient of the gentleman who guaranteed the full amount of the commutation to be convinced he
does not want to be reimbursed in any other spirit than thafc of true Masonio feeling , and we also know that there are enough supporters of tho scheme fco make up any deficiency thafc may arise through refusing donations tendered in such a manner .
The following circular has been forwarded us for publication : — Lamb Building , Temple , London , E . C . 21 st March 1890 .
DEAR Sin AND BROTHER , —At the close of last year a circular was issued by Bro . J , D . Langton , tho Hon . Secretary of the Provisional Committee which is now entrusted with the management of tho Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , with tho object of obtaining tho concurrence of tho Lodges and Subscribers in helping to raise a Special Fund to enable tho Committee to secure tho retirement of
Brother Binckes from the office of Secretary of the Institution , au end which it was felt ought to command tho assent and assistance of all who are really interested in the future well-being of our School . To that nppcal much and generous support has been given , and some of the largo Provinces are assisting by collecting their entire quota within thoir own Provinces .
Bufc the manifest importance of the desired end being attained afc the earliest possible moment , induces me , on behalf of myself aud colleagues , to call your earnest and immediate attention to the matter . The unanimous resolutions of fche General Courts , and the appoint-Went of the Provisional Committee charged to carry out the recom-

mendations of tho Committee of Investigation , over whioh I hud the hononr to preside , rouder it necessary for us to appeal to you for the aid we now seek . If rendered , it will secure the great object of enabling tho management to start with an entire change of the
administration , and to break completely away from tho past . It will preclude all question of devoting subscriptions given for the School fco retiring allowances and pensions . It will enable ns to carry out yonr wishes to tho full , as you have expressed thorn , and as we understand them .
Let me ns strongly as I may beg yon nofc to let the great work be crippled or retarded by laying our Appeal aside ; if you are of opinion onr work ought to be thorough and complete , we must ask you to support us . We have already obtained results whioh we trust you will appreciate . Under the new Head-master we have every
confidence that tbe tone and morale of the School will be raised , and made worthy of our Order , and we are giving unremitting attention to start the new management on that course whioh yon have indicated has yonr approval . I wonld earnestly and respectfully bo <** of you to permit OB to
complete what has thus been begun , and .-. able us to continue our duties untrammelled by any traditions or practices of the pasfc , and then hold us responsible if we fail to achieve what we ought to do . In tho full assurance that you will see fche wisdom as well aa necessity of thus acting , and of aiding onr common purpose in the true spirit whioh distinguishes onr greafc Brotherhood .
I am , for myself and colleagues , Very faithfully and fraternally yours , FRED . A . PHILBRICK , Grand Registrar .

The brethren of the Royal Brunswick and St . Cecilia Lodges held a joint " At Home " at the Royal Pavilion , Brighton , on the 19 fch inst . The company numbered over three hundred , and the gathering proved highly enjoyable .
The rooms were tastefully decorated , the floral arrangements being by Messrs . W . Balchin and Son . Light refreshments were supplied in tho drawing rooms by
Messrs . Booth and Sons . The music room , banquetting room , and saloon were set aside for dancing , the band being under the direction of Mr . H . S . Gates .
We are pleased to note that the brethren of the Bute Lodge , No . 960 , have subscribed the handsome donation of -615 15 s to the Llanerch Colliery Explosion Fund ,
which has been handed to the Mayor of Cardiff by Bros . Peace and Ferrier . We are informed that tho members of the Lodge hope to subscribe a similar sum in a few days to the Morfa Explosion Fund ,
On the 23 rd inst . there was a large muster of Masons from all parts of the Province , at Stalybridge , on the invitation of the three local Lodges , to participate in a special service in aid of the Cheshire Masonic Charities .
The members met at the Masonic Rooms in good force despite the unfavourable weather , and , headed by the band of the 4 th C . R . V ., marched to church , where a sermon was preached by the vicar , Bro . Rev . James Grant Bird P . G . C . A substantial sum was realised .
It is announced thafc the " Ocean Wave " Syndicate , which is now being converted into a Limited Company , will remove their two ingenious machines , which enable visitors to sail on a mimic sea , to
