CORRESPONDENCE .
FACTS , SUGGESTIONS , AND QUESTIONS .
To the Editor of THE FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —I can satisfy so mnch of Bro . Norton ' s inquiry , made towards the end of his paper of 15 th inst ., as to Master Masons' Lodges and Smith ' s Pocket Companion for 1736 . I have by mo at the moment a copy of tlio latter , kindly lent by Bro . W . Spencer . On turning to the list of Lodges at the end , I find the
following : — < : 110 . ' Bear and Harrow , Master Masons' Lodge , Butcher-row , second and fourth Fridays . 117 . King ' s Arms , Master Masejns' Lodge , in tho Strand , third Monday and fifth Sunday . 120 . Oates's Coffee House , Masters' Lodgo , in Great Wild-street , first and third
Sunday . " The above do not essentially differ from the description of tho same three , in Pine ' s List for 1734 , as reprinted by Bro . Hn han . There is ono entry in Smith's list , 1736 , on which I should esteem it a favour if Bro . Hughan wonld throw somo light . It is the
following : — " 115 . Scots Masons Lodge , Devil , Templo Bar , second and fourth Monday . " This list is anterior to the constitution of the Scottish G . L ., which was established in 1736 . Is " Scots Masons Lodgo" titular or descriptive ? That is , is it the stylo and title of the Lodgo bestowed
npon it because , perhaps , tho members were chiefly Scotchmen who were working Freemasonry according to the rite of tho English Grand Lodgo ? Or , does it mean a Lodge of Scotch Masons , who , having no Grand Lodge of their own , had the protection of tho English Grand Lodge extended to them , and at the same time were permitted to work in accordance with their own rite ? Perhaps Bro . Hughan will kindly offer a solution of this mystery , and oblige , Yours truly and fraternally , " Q . "
A CORRECTION . To the Editor of THE FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —I am anxions to correct a little mistake which appears in your last number of tho CHRONICLE . In your report of " Confidence " Lodgo of Instruction , I am represented as Secretary of tho Lewis Lodge 1185 ; such is not tho case , as
I am only a M . M . in that Lodgo , and at tho meeting in question the word Secretary was not at all mentioned . I do not know how the error got into print . Lower down in your report a second mistake occurs , you say Bros . Lewis and Abbot returned thanks , & c . For Lewis—please read Harris—the report otherwise is perfectly accurate .
I am , dear Sir and Bro ., yours fraternally , KENNETT HARRIS , Lewis Lodgo 11 S 5 .
P . S . —Our much respected Brother and P . M ., Arthur Learcd , is Secretary of our Lodge . K . II . 26 th September 1877 .
