M . on rising said he had now a very pleasing duty to perform , and that was , in the name of the Lodge , to present Bro . Veal , tho retiring W . M . with a Past Master ' s jewel ; he was confident that it would be highly appreciated ; the brethren all
considered the jewel woll earned , as the dutios of his office for the year had been carried ont with tho greatest excellence ; in conclnsion he hoped the G . A . O . T . U . would permit him to wear it for many years to come , so that it might be looked npon by his children with the highest value and estimation . A brief acknowledgment was here given by the Immediate Paast Master , who bad no
desire to detain the brethren as he supposed they would expect to hear his voice later in the ovening . Votes of thanks—firstly , to Bro . Veal , for the very efficient manner in which he had conducted the affairs of tho Lodgo ; secondly , to Bro . P . M . Dawson , for the able manner he had acted as D . C . ; thirdly , to the Audit Committee ; fourthly , to Bro . H . T . Hardy , for his attention to tho duties of
Secretary ; and two proposals for initiates brought the business of the Lodge to a close . A sumptuous banquet and dessert , provided by the proprietors ( Kingston and Fromm ) , followed . The artistic arrangements and general view of the tables was most enticing , and this was further well supported by the abundance of good things that followed . The W . M . proposed tho usual Loyal and Masonic toasts , all of which
were duly honoured . The I . P . M . said he now rose with great pleasure to propose the toast of the W . M . All present well knew his capabilities and willingness . He had filled creditably the offices prior to that he now held , and he believed this was a unanimous opinion of all the brethren . He had been associated with him for some considerable time , and he trusted that his year of office would
be a successful one in every respect . The W . M ., replying , thanked Brother Veal for the kind expressions he had made respecting himself . He was ready and willing to work if it came before him . He sincerely hoped to make good progress , aud he thought this might be expected when he saw snch good feeling around him . He had every faith in being well supported by his Officers . Iu proposing the
health of the I . P . M . he could not speak too highly of what Bro . Veal had done for the Lodge . His snccessful efforts were already known to all the brethren . The expouse and trouble that Bro . Veal had put himself to in various ways for the welfare of the Lodge commauded their gratitude . He wonld ask them to be upstanding and give a hearty Wapping fire to their esteemed Bro . Veal , which it is needless
to say was well responded to . Bro . Veal , in reply , said when he first filled the chair he thought it an easy task ; he , nevertheless , was amply rewarded for all that he had done when ho saw it so well acknowledged . He heartily thanked them for tho handsome present they had thought proper to give him , and shonld feel proud to wear it as long as he lived . Notwithstanding that he had left the chair he
shonld always be pleased to be brought into action whenever he was required . He hoped to be amongst them for some time to come , and see the present Officors advance and attain tho prominent position that Bro . Magrath now held . The toast of the Initiate waa next given and suitably replied to . The next toast from the chair was
that of the Visitors , all of whom severally responded , in terms praising all they had seen and heard . Tho E . A . 's song , with others , added much to the enjoyment of the brethren , thus a really pleasant evening was spont . The Officers' toast was next in order , and that of the Tyler brought the meeting to an end .

St' -ward , W . Hogg P . M . Secretary . Tho Installing Master , Bro , Hullam , then gave a lino rendering of tho three charges , and con . eluded his arduous duties amid the applause of all present . The ballot was taken for the admission of Messrs . Thomas Christmas and Thomas Eastman ; proving favourable , those gentlemen were admitted into the secrets and mysteries . The report of the Audit Committee
was presented , and unanimously adopted . Lodge was closed in due form , and tho brethren sat down to an excellent banquet , served iu capital style by the caterers , Bros . Fromm and Kingston . On the removal of the cloth , tho nsnal toasts were given , that of the Queen and the Craft being heartily received ; Bro . Friedeberg sang a verae of the National Anthem . The health of the Prince of Wales was
next honoured , followed by a verse of " God Bless the Prince of Wales . " The W . M . then gave tho Earl of Carnarvon Pro Grand Master , tho Earl of Lathom Deputy Grand Master , and the Grand Officers past and present , whioh was responded to by Bro . J . Wright P . G . P . Bro . Hallam , having taken np the gavel , expressed the pleasure he felt in proposing , for the first time , the health of the
W . M . With this all present would be in accord , and he was sure all would join in it . Bro . Durell was a W . M . the brethren might be proud of ; they all felt assured that , if his health permitted him to attend every meeting , he would give satisfaction by his working . The W . M ., in reply , thanked Bro . Hallam and the brethren for the kind and cordial manner in which the toast had been proposed and
received . He was very much indebted to them , and trusted that , as Bro . Hallam had wished , he would be able , with the help of the G . A . O . T . U ., to attend every meeting , and discharge his duties to the satisfaction of all . The Past Masters were next honoured , the W . M . saying that all the brethren liked to be Past Masters , and work up in that direction , but their true value could only be felt by a new
occupant of the chair . Bro . Hallam responded ; he was gratified at the warm and hearty manner in which the toast- had been received . He might be pardoned for saying a few words about himself . During the past year , as W . M ., he had experienced many anxious moments , and had received great assistance from the Past Masters , the Wardens , and , above all , the members of the Lodge . On behalf of
himself and fellow P . M . ' s , he tendered his sincere thanks . The toast of the Visitors was next given , and duly responded to . The health of the Treasurer and Secretary was then proposed , and heartily received . Bro . Musto replied , on behalf of Bro . Hogg and himself . He had had the honour of introducing the W . M . into Freemasonry , and teaching him some portion of his Masonio knowledge . Bro . Durell
proved himself an apt pupil . It at all times afforded him ( Bro . Musto ) considerable pleasure to see those whom he had introduced into the Order , or imparted Masonio instruction to , arrive at the chair of K . S . For himself , he would be always willing to perform any duty or hold any office in the Lodge whereby he might advance its interests . Speaking as Treasurer , he said that whilst
they found him the money for the bills the W . M . ordered , if not extravagaut , he wonld pay them , but their Treasurer conld not become their banker . He also trusted the Benevolent Fund ( recently started ) would not trench upon the comforts of the brethren , as he maintained that , whilst they were enjoying the fourth degree , we felt most for the wants of others . The Initiates was then given , the
W . M . remarking that without the introduction of new blood the Order would gradually decline . He asked them to give a hearty reception to tho newly made brethren . In response , Bro . Eastman said he scarcely knew at present what to say , but he promised them that , with God's help , he would strive to become a worthy Mason . This sentiment—endorsed by Bro . Christmas , the other initiate—was
very favourably received . The health of the Officers was then given , and duly responded to . The Tyler's toast concluded a very enjoyable evening's proceedings . Bro . Godolphin , in his songs— " The Village Blacksmith" and Monarch of the Woods "—was most effective , and Bro . C . Eschwege also gave much pleasure by his . rendering of
" The Vagabond , " and a reoitation from " The Lady of Lyons . Several other brethren contributed to the general harmony , and a word of praise is due to Bro . Shelford 765 for his able acoompanyment , and the very enlivening morceaux played during the post prandial procedings .
