Bro. Emra Holmes's Lecture On The "United Orders Of The Temple And Hospital."
BRO . EMRA HOLMES'S LECTURE ON THE "UNITED ORDERS OF THE TEMPLE AND HOSPITAL . "
NOTES BY Lures . —No . in . 1 ijunrrc-1 nut with creeds , and as a member of tlie Church of England , I have as much respect for tlie Roman Catholic Knights of St .
J ohn as for those of the faith to which I myself belong , but , so far as in me lies , I must see the same justice and fair play accorded to the one as to the ether .
uro . Holmes , , 'ifter making a very unnecessary assertion of ri ghts on the part of the Freemasons , as compared with the English laiigue , ventured to state to Grand Conclave as follows : — " A
body of Knights met in Paris , and "revived the English laiigue ofthe Order , but as Protestants , and bearing in mind it was a Papal Order , they had no more right to call theimelves Knights of
Malta , than th .- Sir Kni ghts present had . " Jf liro . I b'hnes made this assertion with an impv'ifvCt knowledge of his subject , I hope he will pardon my saying that some caution should be
exercised before public statements are made which the speaker may afterwards find he cannot support . Jf on the other liand h ? was aware that he was giving utterance tq a boa it fill declara-

tion , in positive opposition to historic fact , then I look in vain for any other motive than that of an unprovoked and gratuitous attack on the brotherhood * he designates as the "
Manchestenan body . I do not clearly comprehend whether the Paris Knig hts are intended by Bro . Holmes to be described as Protestants , or whether the revived
languc only is meant , or both 3 I will , however , take them as a whole . The Knights meeting in Paris were of the Roman faith , as 1 have before stated , were a lawfully constituted commission
of the Order , and were representative of a majority of the then existing langites ; they were well aware that the revived languc would be mostly composed of members of the Church of
England , and they provided accordingly ( as I have before quoted ) in the Articles of Convention . It is however , useless , now that the schoolmaster is far abroad , for this parrot cry to be run " ' out as aoainst the lawful claim of the
English laiigue , because its members are mostly ofthe Protestant faith ; such a ilinisy pretence is the too plain indication of a miserably bad cause , and could only have any effect when
addressed to the ears of the ignorant or the unwary . Bro . Holmos himself strenuously advocates the L-gal position of the Emperor Paul of Russia : and the Roman Catholic branches ofthe
Order accepted him as their lawful head and chief ; was he a Roman Catholic ? Can anything after the latter fact , hj said against the rig ht of action of the French Commission , or
the claims of those deriving under it Was the Duke of Susses ., whose apocryphal position Bro . Holmes fondly hoped , by his unsupported statements , to convert into a substantial reality , a
Roman Catholic : What were the Royal brothers George IV . and William IV ., and the late revered Prince , Albert the Good , who all received their crosses from Roman Catholic
branches of the Order ? Is it a mistake in history that the Bailiwick of Brandenburg , after separating itself from the main body on account ot its adoption of the reformed faith , was again
reunited with the Order , retaining its altered creed and electing its own Bailiff" ? And is it untrue that the Bailiwick is at the present time acknowledged as a lawful institution of the Order , and
yet holds the Evangelical faith ? Is it an error to suppose that the legality of the Russian Priories of the Greek Church has never been i upugned : Was Louis de Boisgeiin , ( a Roman
Catholic Knight ) , the Order ' s most accomplished historian of his date , under some delusion when he wrote , " 1 he Order of Malta , though it regrets the circumstances that have occasioned its
separation from the knig hts of a different religion , does not refuse them a place among its members to fight against the enemies of Jesus Christ . " Pope Pius XL , whose virtues struck
with awe even the cruel monsters , his persecutors , was of the same opinion , and approved the association ofthe Russian Knig hts ofthe Greek Church with the Order of Malta . It may indeed
"And sisterhood too , seeing that the roll of the Order includes the Dowager Countess Beauchanip , the Countess of Mount Charles , the
Dowager Lady Torphichen , the Viscountess St . Jal , Lady Leigh , Lady Lechmere , Lady Hoare , Lady St . George , and others .
