REPLY . 20 th January , 1879 . VV . M . and Brethren . — To respond suitably lo such an address as that which you have just presented to me is a task to which . I feel totally inadequate . I find it almost impossible to select words which would fully convey to you the depth of
my gratitude . 1 assure you I have never experienced such a mingling of feelings as 1 do on the present occasionfeelings of surprise and thankfulness . Surprise , when 1 consider how undeserving I have been of such a mark of favonr as you have just evinced towards me . I know of nothing in my conduct , either as a member of the lodge , or as one of its officers , to warrant such an
outcome of friendly feeling ane ! regard as you have just displayed by your valuable present . . It would be false were I to deny that I have taken a deep interest in the affairs of this loelge ever since I became a member of it ; and to the affairs of Lodge 126 , my interest is not confined , for it extends to every institution connected with our Order .
During the years I spent in thc several offices of the lodge I felt the spirit of honest and earnest ambition flowing higher anil higher as 1 approached that honourable andresponsibleposition , which I bave just vacated , and with that spirit of ambition within me , I became the more conscious of my own we-aknesses ant ! shortciming ; . when I contemplated the duties and responsibilities of the exalted position of
W . M . of the lotlge . It needed no such evidence as an address and testimonial to assure me of your personal esteem , and truly Masonic feeling towards me , for these you nave constantly proved by the assistance , support , and forbearance , which you so willingly accorded to mc during my year of office as your W . M . It is alone to that suppoit and forbearance , must be
attributed whatever small success may have attended the discharge of the tluties which devolved upon me . The feelings of thankfulness which so largely mingles with those of surprise , I cannot . sufficiently express . 1 can einl . give you my word of solemn assurance , that these feeling ' s ate genuine anil sincere . The kin , l and too flattering expressions contained in your beautiful address I coultl not
attempt to reply to ; but the words of friendship and regard which it contains I will never forget , and I ask you to believe that they are fully reciprocated by me to the members of Lotlge 126 . The valuable present whicli accompanies that address I shrill ever guard and preserve for its intrinsic value as well as a memento of the friendly spirit and fraternal
feelings which I know prempts you to present it ; and 1 trust it may ever keep me in constant remembrance of the great lessons which are conveyed to the minds of all true Freemasons by the symbolic teaching of the compasses anil square . The feelings of honour and pride with which I shall ever regard the Degree of Past Master , are beyond my power
eif expressing . This jewel will ever serve to remind me of the pleasantest year of my Masonic career—the year I spent as W . M . ot my own parent lotlge—thc Lod ge of Israel , a lodge which has ever he-Id an honourable position amongst the- lodges on the roll ot the Gram ! Lod ge of Ireland . Although 1 have served in all the offices of the ! i _ li > i . anil have now surrendered the last anil must
honourable- uf iliese offices , yet my interest in its well bt-iii" - is neit diminished . I cannot share ihe feelings , which I regret , is so manifestly exhibited by many , who mi leaving the chair of the W . M . can console themselves with the idea that they have nothing more to tin in the affairs and labours of the lotlge .
1 his line of reasoning I cannot adopt , for 1 am strongly cf the opinion that every P . M . should try lo be in his place at the lodge meetings , and so endeavour to promote the interests of the lodge , by his presence anti advice , and thus afford to his junior brethren the benefit of ihe experience which by his years of service he has becn able t
acquire . My earnest prayer is that the year we have just entered upon may be one of much prosperity to the lod ge , and that its meetings may be happily begun , conducted with order , and closed in harmony . That brotherl y love may
prevail , and every moral and social virtue may cement and unite us . Again thanking you for your valuable present and address . I remain , yours truly and fraternally , THOS . RICE , P . M . 126 .

RICE , P . M . 126 .
