At the last monthly meeting of the Peace and Harmony Lodge , No . 359 , at Southampton , it was decided to present a resolution of thanks , engrossed * and illuminated on vellum , and a testimonial , to the Secretary of the lodge , Bro . A . J . Aliller , P . AL , on his retirement from that office

to fill that of Provincial Grand Secretary . Bro . Aliller has been Secretary to the lodge for thirteen years , and is succeeded in the office by Bro . John Adams , P . M . The testimonial , by Bro . Aliller ' sown desire , will take the form of a Life-Governorship of the Alasonic School for Girls , which will be purchased for him from the lodge funds .

Bro . the Duke of St . Alban ' s has arrived at St . George ' s Hotel , Albemarle-street , from Bestivood Lodge , Nottingham ; and Bro . the Duke of Abercorn , G . AL Ireland , at Hampden House , from visiting the Alarquis of Lansdowne at Bowood , Wilts .

Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught , attended by Alajor Egerton , left Buckingham Palace last week for Biarritz , were they will remain for a few weeks for the Duchess's health . The infant Princess remains at Windsor . Bro . Sir Erasmus Wilson has promised to give £ 2500 to found a Scholarshi p in the Royal College of Alusic , including education and maintenance .

Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Albany , K . G ., and his bride will be present at a grand ball to be given in honour of them on June 12 th at the house which Albert Grant built some years ago . Bro . the Lord Mayor yesterday laid the foundation-stone of the City of London College , and arranged to be present to-day ( Saturday ) at the UniversitTes ' boat-race . On Thursday , the 23 rd ult , Bro . the Lord Mayor , having issued his precept , Alderman Sir Thos . Owden presided at a Wardmote in Bishopsgate Schools for the

election of a Common Councilman . There were present the Deputy , Bro . Johnson , Bro . Fitch , Air . Bush , CC ., Air . Boor , C . C ., and others . Mr . Norris proposed Bro . Henry Clarke , citizen , merchant , goldsmith and spectacle-maker , as a fit and proper person to represent the Ward , which was seconded by Bro . Fitch , who remarked he had known Bro . Clarke for some time , and he esteemed and respected

him . Sir Thos . Owden declared Bro . Clarke dul y elected . In reply , Bro . Clarke said he would do all in his power to maintain the dignity and prestige of the Corporation . He has for some time interested himself in questions of Municipal Reform , City Parochial Charities , and the Civic Guilds . Bro . Clarke will , no doubt , be an acquisition to the Court of Common Council , having much leisure time , and having travelled a great deal in various parts of the world .

Bro . the Lord Mayor was enabled to intimate , at a State luncheon given by Bro . His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught on the occasion of the Duke ' s speaking at the meeting , reported m our last issue , for the furtherance of the scheme of the Royal College of Alusic , that the Queen will personally declare Epping Forest open to the people for ever m the course of a few weeks . Her Alajesty wishes to do

this , showing again her deep interest in all that is good and useful for her subjects , but does not wish to be entertained at a banquet . Her Alajesty , since the death of the Prince Consort , has several times visited the City and East-end to promote some good work , but has always declined any festivities . It is rumoured that Bro . the Lord Alayor on the occasion may be created a baronet . We sincerel y hope the report may not turn out to be too good to be true .

Bros , the Marquis of Headfort , the Duke of Marlborough , and the Earl of Dalkeith have left town for their respective seats in the country . Bro . the Lord Mayor has been invited b } ' Bro . Lord Carington , Caplain of the Corps of

Bro . Sir Arthur Haytcr , M . P ., entertained at dinner , on the 23 th ult ., Bros . Earl Granville , Earl of Dalhousie , the Speaker , and the Premier , and their ladies . Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Albany , attended by Air . Royle , arrived at Alentone on the 22 nd ult ., and

afterwards met the Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coburg , who arrived on a visit to Her Alajesty . We regret to say that H . R . H . had a fall , and is again laid up with his knee . ' He will shortly proceed to Artosin , the palace of his fiancee , and then to Berlin , to visit the Crown Prince of Germany .

Bro . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has now in hand , or promised , £ 100 , 000 for the Royal College of Alusic , a third of the whole sum asked for . Bro . the Bishop of Peterborough and Miss Alagee have taken a house at Stokes Bay , near Peterborough , as the palace is in such a state of bad repair as to be uninhabitable .

Lady Stanhope , at the family residence , had a reception on Saturday . Amongst the numerous guests were Bros , the Earl of ' Onslotv , Lords Balfour of Burleigh , and Tweedmouth , Colonel Tayler , ALP . ; and Sir Bartle Frere . A large number of ladies were present . The members of the Merchant Navy Lodge of Instruction , No . 7 S 1 , have invited Bro . James Stevens , P . AL , P . Z ., to deliver his lecture explanatory of the ceremonies of the First Degree on Wednesday evening , the 5 th inst . This lodge of instruction meets at the Silver 'Tavern , Burdett-road , Limehouse , under the Preceptorship of Bro . S . J . Turquand . On the above occasion a large muster of brethren is expected . Lodge will be opened at 7 . 30 .

Arthur Robins and his parishioners are about to place a memorial window in the chancel of the parish church of Holy Trinity , Windsor , as a thankoffering for the deliverance of the Queen on the 2 nel ult . from the assassination attempted by Roderick Alaclean .

The Prince of Wales presided at Willis ' s Rooms , on Thursday evening last , at the festival dinuer in aid of lhe funds of thc Victoria Hospital for Children , Queen's-road , Chelsea . Bro . the Alarquis c : Hamilton and Colonel A . Ellis were in attendance on Kis Royal Highness .

On Thursday , the Earl of Winterton „< id Lad y Georgiana Hamilton , daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn , were married at St . George's Church , Hanover-square , when their Royal Highnesses , the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge were present .

lhe l'Veemasons ot Ireland , out of respect to the Dukeof Abercorn , the Grand Alaster Mason of Ireland , considered it a fitting opportunity of showing their respect to his Grace's family , by presenting Lady Georgina with a present on the occasion of her marriage . It consists of an old Irish cross , pendant , and earrings , set with brilliants and Irish pearls , and of great artistic design .

lhe anniversary banquet of ( he Chaucer Lodge of Instruction , No . 1540 , will take place at the Grapes , St . 'Thomas-street , Borough , on Tuesday , the 4 th inst . The first annual ball of the East-end Licensed Victuallers took place at the Limehouse Town Hall , on the 21 st ult ., with marked success . The ball was promoted by Bro . W . Davies ( host , 12511 ) , Governor of the Licensed

Victuallers School , whose untiring exertion , aided by the co-operation of many well-known East-end brethren . and friends , received the attendance of a company exceeding 150 , despite the inclement weather . A capital band , guided by the baton of Bro . Louis Honig , 1319 , discoursed some excellent music until supper-time arrived . Bro . VV . Davis presided , and was supported by Bros . Christian , Lamb , and IT . Chown . The supper was elegantly served .

A novel but useful Congress is now being- held in Paris ; it is called the Book-keepers' Conference . It appears that the science of book-keeping is very behindhand in France . It is only taught in the commercial schools , and that very imperfectly . 'The object of the Congress is to get it introduced into the primary schools

as part of the national education . It was stated by one of the speakers that many important French firms were really in ignorance of the real state of their balance-sheet for lack of competent book-keepers . This is extraordinary , if true ; but it is certain that the French are as weak in arithmetic as they are in geography .

The Art Gallery of Birmingham is about to be enriched by a portrait of Lord Hartington , the first , we believe , for which he has sat . It is painted by Bro . H . T . Aluntis , and was on view for some days at Devonshire House , previouslytowithdiawal for submission to the Royal Academy .

Notice is given that owing lo exceptional circumstances Her Alajesty ' s birthday will this year be celebrated in I ' -ngland on Saturday , the 3 rd of June . In all other places Her Alajesty ' s birthday is to be kept , as usual , on the 24 th of Alay .

The Prince of Wales has become patron of the Norfolk County Cricket Club , and will subscribe five guineas annually to its funds . The committee are arranging some good matches tor the ensuing season . At a banquet which took place on Thursday week at Lusby ' s Alusic Hall ( of which Bros . Charles Crowder and George Adney Payne are the proprietors ) .

a presentation was made to these brethren , consisting of illuminated addresses on vellum , beautifully framed , and a purse of gold . appreciation of the management of the above well-conducted establishment . In consequence of the death of Mr . Christopher Pond , of the well-known firm of Spiers and Pond , it has been deemed advisable by the surviving partner , Air . F . VV . Spiers , to convert the business into a limited company , for the purpose of realising the late Mr . Pond ' s interest . The capital required for the purpose ( £ 500 , 000 ) was at once subscribed privately , and , under the title of Spiers and Pond ( Limited ) , the business will be carried on as heretofore . Mr . A novel but useful Congress is now being- held in Paris ; it is called the Book-keepers' Conference . It appears that the science of book-keeping is very behindhand in France . It is only taught in the commercial schools , and that very imperfectly . 'The object of the Congress is to get it introduced into the primary schools

as part of the national education . It was stated by one of the speakers that many important French firms were really in ignorance of the real state of their balance-sheet for lack of competent book-keepers . This is extraordinary , if true ; but it is certain that the French are as weak in arithmetic as they are in geography .
