The lodge having been opened , Bro . O'Fanell was passed to the Degree of F . C ., and Bro . F . Cox duly raised to the Degree of M . M . The bye-laws were read , and the election of W . M . and Treasurer took place . The S . VV ., Bro . Shand , was unanimously elected W . M . ; Bro . Swallow , P . G . S . D . Middx . ( founderof the lodge ) , was re-elected

Treasurer ; and Bro . Potter , Tyler . The usual jewel was voted to the retiring W . M . Propositions of candidates for next meeting were submitted ; three visitors desired to join the lodge . The brethren afterwards dined at the Cafe Royale ( Bro . Nicholl's ) , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , including "The W . M . Elect , " were given and responded to , and the brethren dispersed at eleven o ' clock .

Robinson , duly proposed at the last meeting , which proving unanimously in his favour , he , being present , was initiated

by the W . M . ; the working tools being presented by Bro . lames Paterson , J . VV . ; and the charge delivered by Bro . Bowes . Bro . Capt . Deacon being a candidate for preferment , anil having proved his claim , was passed by the W . M . ; the tools being presented by the S . VV ., Dr . A . H . Young , and the Lecture on the Tracing Board delivered by Bro . Bowes . After the lodge had been duly closed the brethren adjourned to refreshment .

On the return of the brethren from church , the Craft lodge was closed in due form , when the brethren proceeded to the Lion Hotel , where an excellent banquet was prepared by Bro . R . Lloyd . The usual loyal and Masonic roasts were given and responded to , a very pleasant evening being spent ; Bro . Chas . Blagbrough , of Leeds , contributing some excellent songs . The brethren retired at an early

HALIFAX . —St . James ' s Lodge ( No . 44 S ) . — The usual meeting of this lodge was held at the Freemasons' Hall , on Tuesday evening , the 21 st ult ., when Bro . Wm . Swale , W . M ., presided , and opened the lodge in the Three Degrees , and Bro . C . T . Rhodes , P . M ., gave the Lecture in the Third . Bro . Keighley Walton was

unanimously elected as a joining brother , and was afterwards introduced to the brethren by Bros . Councillors R . WorsicU and J . B . Brierley , both of whom contributed to the enjoyment of a very pleasant gathering . The Life Subscribership to one of the Masonic Charities , usually balloted for , fell on this occasion to Bro . A . I home , fiio ; and others . A splendid repast was served in a most praiseworthy manner by Bro . Wyatt , a liberal course of game being presented by Bro . Edwards ; whilst Mrs . Captain Long kindly made her annual donation of a magnificent pudding , and the privilege accorded the W . M . to furnish the dessert was carried out in a

manner that was highly appreciated . At the conclusion of the repast , the usual Masonic toasts , preceded by " The Queen and the Craft , " were duly honoured , after which "The Health of the W . M . " was cordially toasted , allusion being made to the manner in which Bro . Long had not only worked in the interest of his own lodge , but to his exertions in founding the sister lodge at Clevedon , which task

had been recognised by the Prov . Grand Master by the award of the highest collar of office at his disposal . The W . M . acknowledged the compliment in the course of a few well-chosen remarks , assuring the brethren that the success of Freemasonry would ever be his anxious study . Other toasts followed , the speakers including Bros . Rev . Knox Fletcher , Edwards , Scoones , and Hurd , and a most enjoyable evening was spent .

LIVERPOOL . —Hamer Lodge ( No . 1393 ) . —The usual meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the iGth ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street . 'The lodge was opened at 6 . 30 by Bro . VV . C . A gentleman was proposed for initiation , and the loelge was afterwards closed . The brethren then adjourned to refreshment , and during

the evening the W . M . was complimented by the visitors on his excellent working . Bro . P . M . Evans proposed "The Health of the Ofiicers . " Owing to the absence of the S . anil J . Warden , young ofiicers were called upon to do the work without previous notice , anil the manner in which it was done ivllecti-d great credit upon Bro . Jackson , P . M ., the Preceptor of the Hamer Lodge of Instruction .

MANCHESTER . —Avon Lodge ( No . 1633 . )—The usual monthly meeting was held at the Denmark Hotel , Grecnheys , on Wednesday , the 22 nd ult . Bros . A . Painter , W . M . ; Whittaker , S . VV . ; and all the other ofiicers were present , and n , embers anil visitors numbering some thirty-two . The lodge was opened at Kive . o ' clock with solemn prayer , and the minutes of the previous meeting

were read and confirmed . 'The ballot was afterwards taken for two gentlemen , and , being unanimous in their favour , they were declared duly elected . One of them was then initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M ., after which the leielge was called off , and the brethren adjourned to tea , anel at 7 . 15 they re-assembled in the lodge-room , and the other candidate was duly initiated by the W . M . Bro .

Leigh , P . M ., delivered the corner stone address to both candidate's , and Bro . S . D . McKcllcn presented and explained the working tools in , 1 highly satisfactory manner . Bro . Bestock , P . M ., then assumc-d the W . M . ' s chair , and proceeded to interrogate Bro . J . C . Curtis , who was a candidate for raising . 'The manner in which Bro . Curtis answered the questions was most commendable , and is not often heard . Bro . Bestock then in a masterly manner

raised Bro . Curtis to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., and the ceremony was never performed in finer style , the whole being done without a single hitch , and producing an impressive effect on the candidate , as on all present . On the conclusion of this beautiful ceremony the loelge was lowered by virtue , and when " Hearty good wishes " had been expressed by the visitors , was closed in peace and harmony at 9 . 10 .

read and confirmed . Bro . Tate worked the First Section , and Bro . Brown the Second , assisted by the brethren . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Dehane being the candidate . Bro . Fox worked the Third Section , Bro . Lardner the Fourth , and Bro . Brown the Fifth , assisted by the brethren . Bros . Dehane , Goodenough , Croxton , and Godden were elected as members . Bro . LEWES . —South Saxon Chapter ( No . 311 ) . — The annual meeting of this chapter was held on Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., at the Freemasons' Hall , and Comp . Jos . Farncombe installed as M . E . Z . for the ensuing year . During the proceedings Comp . R . II . Ellman was presented by the lodge with a '/ .. jewel , in recognition of his lengthened services to the chapter . 'The Second and Third Principals installed were Comp . S . Tanner and Comp . G . Stone . The various other ofiicers having been invested , the business

was concluded , and an adjournment made to the Bear Hotel , where a most excellent dinner was served Mr . Whitcomb . The guests numbered about twenty , the afterdinner proceedings being of the usual character . Comp . V . P . Freeman , Prov . G . Secretary Sussex , and father of the South Saxon Chapter , was among the guests , and he assisted very materially in the ceremonies ofthe day , which included two exaltations . A resolution was unanimously passed approving the formation of a Provincial Grand Chapter for Sussex .

All international balloon contest is bcni" ; arranged for by the Balloon Society of Great Britain . 'The aeronauts will probably ascend from the Crystal Palace , and each will travel r . s far as the balloon will take him in a given time . FORTS ON SANDY COASTS . —The annual prize

instituted by the King of the Belgians will he awarded in 1 SS 1 for the best essay on the means of improving ports established on low anel sandy coasts such as those ot Belgium . The competition is open to authors of all nations , Essays must be sent in to the Minister of the Interior before January 1 , 1 SS 1 . —Acadetnv .

SS ART EXHIBITION . — The managers of the Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition in connection with the Church Congreiss at Leicester have issued a catalogue raisonnc of its principal contents , showing thai the loan collection is much larger than last year , embracing upwartls of 400 specimens . Embroidery of the ancient and of the modern schools will be largely represented , in

chasubles , copies , e , rphreys , maniples , altar cloths , & c , not only English , but Flemish , French , and Italian . English and Continental missals , ancient bibles , early printed and in manuscript , Russo-Greek " Icones , " or religious and devotional pictures , monumental brasses , incised slabs , chalices , alms dishes , drawings and elevations of churches ,

photographs and chromo-lithographs of old ecclesiastical pictures , and every variety of illumination will be there ; and worshippers of relics will have permission to inspect inter alia , a piece of ancient embroidery "traditionally said to have formed part of Wickliffe's vestment , " and ^ scnt for exhibition by the present Rector of Lutterworth .

Long had not only worked in the interest of his own lodge , but to his exertions in founding the sister lodge at Clevedon , which task

had been recognised by the Prov . Grand Master by the award of the highest collar of office at his disposal . The W . M . acknowledged the compliment in the course of a few well-chosen remarks , assuring the brethren that the success of Freemasonry would ever be his anxious study . Other toasts followed , the speakers including Bros . Rev . Knox Fletcher , Edwards , Scoones , and Hurd , and a most enjoyable evening was spent .

were read and confirmed . 'The ballot was afterwards taken for two gentlemen , and , being unanimous in their favour , they were declared duly elected . One of them was then initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M ., after which the leielge was called off , and the brethren adjourned to tea , anel at 7 . 15 they re-assembled in the lodge-room , and the other candidate was duly initiated by the W . M . Bro .

Leigh , P . M ., delivered the corner stone address to both candidate's , and Bro . S . D . McKcllcn presented and explained the working tools in , 1 highly satisfactory manner . Bro . Bestock , P . M ., then assumc-d the W . M . ' s chair , and proceeded to interrogate Bro . J . C . Curtis , who was a candidate for raising . 'The manner in which Bro . Curtis answered the questions was most commendable , and is not often heard . Bro . Bestock then in a masterly manner

raised Bro . Curtis to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., and the ceremony was never performed in finer style , the whole being done without a single hitch , and producing an impressive effect on the candidate , as on all present . On the conclusion of this beautiful ceremony the loelge was lowered by virtue , and when " Hearty good wishes " had been expressed by the visitors , was closed in peace and harmony at 9 . 10 .
