The lodge was opened in the customary manner and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed . Bro .
Wright was raised to the Third Degree . The ballot was taken for Mr . Henry Mardell , which proving unanimous in his favour he was declared elected and duly initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry by Bro . Mc-Dowall , I . P . M ., the W . M . having vacated the chair in his favour that the candidate might be initiated by his old friend and companion in arms the I . P . M ., they having for many years been associated in the brigade . 'I he secretary
announced a proposition for next meeting , and the lodge was then closed in peace and harmony . The brethren subsequently adjourned to supper , after which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and responded to , including "the VV . M ., " " the Initiate , " and " the Visitors , " who suitably acknowledged the same , thus closing the season with a very enjoyable evening , Bros . Nuding , Walker , Beard , McNish , Petley , and others contributinc their quota to the harmony of the evening .
SAINT MARY ABBOTTS LODGE ( No . 1974 ) . —The second regular meeting under the presidency of its new W . M ., Bro . Capt . Charles F . Compton , was held on the 24 th ult . at the Town Hall , Kensington , VV ., and proved a great success , both in point of attendance of members and their friends and in the excellency of the working and banquet arrangements afterwards . This was necessitated b y the amount of work upon the agenda pap : r , consisting of two initiations , one passing , and two raisings . Early as the
hour was , a very good muster of the brethren were in their places when the W . M . sounded his gavel and opened the lodge . After the confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting the report of the Permanent Committee was brought up and adopted . The W . M . then vacated the chair in favour of the I . P . M ., Bro . Capt . A . Nicols , who , assisted by the principal officers , raised Bros . G . S . Smyth and A . A . Williamson in a manner which must have made
a profound impression on their minds . The same efficiency marked the working of the Second Degree , which was taken by Bro . Dr . S . Skinner , P . P . G . D . C . Dorset . Bro . Dr . Francis C . Compton , P . G . Org . Surrey , son of the W . M ., then took the chair and proceeded to initiate his two friends , Messrs . H . E . South and F . VV . Stericker , into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry , which ceremony he performed in his usual pleasine and perfect style . On the
motion of Bro . George Capper Harding , P . M ., 1238 , Sec , seconded b y Bro . Capt . A . Nicols , it was unanimously resolved "That an expression of sympathy and condolence with her Majesty the Queen and with her Royal Highness the Duchess of Albany in the bereavement they have sustained by the death of His Royal Highness Prince Leopold , P . G . Warden , be recorded on the minutes of the lodge . " Telecrrams and letters of reeret at inability to attend were
received from Bros . Sir Algernon Borthwick , Irwin E . B . Cox , and other brethren . One joining member was proposed , and will no doubt be elected in due course , for his familiar face has often been seen in this lodge as a visitor . At the conclusion of the business the Master and his Wardens " put by their jewels , " and members and visitors adjourned to the banquet which was served at Bailey's
Hotel . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured during the evening , and the charity of the brethren invoked and heartily responded to . On opening the charity box the W . M . found in it a strange little coin , certainly not current in this country , which gave him the opportunity for making a very humours speech , shortly after which the brethren separated to their respective homes .

placed on the minutes to Bro . fc .. Kirby , P . M ., for the admirable manner in which he had performed the ceremony that day , and Bro . Kirby having suitably acknowledged the kindness of the brethren , the VV . M . rose and in a few appropriate remarks presented the I . P . M . with a Past Master ' s jewel which had been subscribed for by the brethren . Bro . Davy returned his heartfelt thanks forthcirgrcat kindness to him on all occasions ; he would always wear
the jewel with pleasure and pride . To him it came as a great surprise . He had only striven to do that which every brother ought to do—his duty to the Craft and the chair . After many expressions of goodwill towards the VV . M . and " i hcarty good wishes" from the visiting brethren , the lodge was closed in due and ancient form . The brethren afterwards adjourned to the banqueting hall , where an excellent repast was provided by our worthy
Bro . II . Spurrier , to whom , as well as to Mrs . Spurrier , very great credit is due for the efficient arrangements that had been made for the creature comforts of the brethren , the viands and wines being all that could he wished . The VV . M . presided , being ably assisted by his officers . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , that of "Our Most Gracious Queen" being given in very
feeling terms b y the VV . M . " The Grand Master , " " The Masonic Charities , " "The Installing Master , " and "The I . P . M . " were very cordially received , and "The Charities " found in Bro . Leith a very able and energetic supporter . The proceedings were greatly enhanced by the excellent singing of Bros . Fricker and Higgins , Bro . Aubrey ably presided at the piano .

Recorder of Bolton , who had remained in Bolton at the conclusion of the Quarter Sessions in order to be prcsentat the meeting of the lodge and be present at the installation of Bro . Ilarwood , who is serving the ofiice of Mayor of Bolton for a second year and reierred to the honourable iiosition tilled in the Masonic Fraternity by the learned irother , and the pleasure his timely visit had afforded all the
brethren . I he motion was cordiall y agreed to and ordered to be inserted on the minutes of the proceedings . Bro . Pope in acknowledging the compliment paid to him expressed his gratification in attending a lodge in a town where he had been officiall y connected for very many years , where everything appeared to be worked so well , and where all the needful arrangements has been carried out with such
zeal and precision , he could not hel p referring to the great courtesy and kindness extended to him by the Magistrates generally , and the Mayor of the borough in particular , who were always ready and willing to afford him every possible assistance and anticipate his every wish . The
Mayor , the W . M . of to-day , was the youngest Magistrate on the bench , but his acquaintance with him had been such as to satisfy him that he was a true type of an Englishman , frank , open , and straightforward , and it had afforded him great satisfaction to be present to welcome his admission amongst the rulers of the Craft .
The lodge room was most tastefully decorated and adorned with many banners the property of private members of the St . George ' s and other lodges , with their respective arms and crests elegantly embroidered thereon , and were arranged under the direction of Bro . Blain , an old Mason and P . M . of this lodge . " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by the visiting brethren , and the lodge was closed .
Banquet was prepared under the able supervision of Bro . Priestley and Mrs . Priestley , whose efforts were heartily appreciated and gave the greatest satisfaction to the brethren . The musical brethren mustered in force and contributed materially to the success of the meeting , which was the most successful Masonic gathering in Bolton for some years , and will be long remembered by those who had the privilege of being present on the occasion .

announced a proposition for next meeting , and the lodge was then closed in peace and harmony . The brethren subsequently adjourned to supper , after which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and responded to , including "the VV . M ., " " the Initiate , " and " the Visitors , " who suitably acknowledged the same , thus closing the season with a very enjoyable evening , Bros . Nuding , Walker , Beard , McNish , Petley , and others contributinc their quota to the harmony of the evening .
SAINT MARY ABBOTTS LODGE ( No . 1974 ) . —The second regular meeting under the presidency of its new W . M ., Bro . Capt . Charles F . Compton , was held on the 24 th ult . at the Town Hall , Kensington , VV ., and proved a great success , both in point of attendance of members and their friends and in the excellency of the working and banquet arrangements afterwards . This was necessitated b y the amount of work upon the agenda pap : r , consisting of two initiations , one passing , and two raisings . Early as the
hour was , a very good muster of the brethren were in their places when the W . M . sounded his gavel and opened the lodge . After the confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting the report of the Permanent Committee was brought up and adopted . The W . M . then vacated the chair in favour of the I . P . M ., Bro . Capt . A . Nicols , who , assisted by the principal officers , raised Bros . G . S . Smyth and A . A . Williamson in a manner which must have made
a profound impression on their minds . The same efficiency marked the working of the Second Degree , which was taken by Bro . Dr . S . Skinner , P . P . G . D . C . Dorset . Bro . Dr . Francis C . Compton , P . G . Org . Surrey , son of the W . M ., then took the chair and proceeded to initiate his two friends , Messrs . H . E . South and F . VV . Stericker , into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry , which ceremony he performed in his usual pleasine and perfect style . On the
motion of Bro . George Capper Harding , P . M ., 1238 , Sec , seconded b y Bro . Capt . A . Nicols , it was unanimously resolved "That an expression of sympathy and condolence with her Majesty the Queen and with her Royal Highness the Duchess of Albany in the bereavement they have sustained by the death of His Royal Highness Prince Leopold , P . G . Warden , be recorded on the minutes of the lodge . " Telecrrams and letters of reeret at inability to attend were
received from Bros . Sir Algernon Borthwick , Irwin E . B . Cox , and other brethren . One joining member was proposed , and will no doubt be elected in due course , for his familiar face has often been seen in this lodge as a visitor . At the conclusion of the business the Master and his Wardens " put by their jewels , " and members and visitors adjourned to the banquet which was served at Bailey's
Hotel . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured during the evening , and the charity of the brethren invoked and heartily responded to . On opening the charity box the W . M . found in it a strange little coin , certainly not current in this country , which gave him the opportunity for making a very humours speech , shortly after which the brethren separated to their respective homes .

Recorder of Bolton , who had remained in Bolton at the conclusion of the Quarter Sessions in order to be prcsentat the meeting of the lodge and be present at the installation of Bro . Ilarwood , who is serving the ofiice of Mayor of Bolton for a second year and reierred to the honourable iiosition tilled in the Masonic Fraternity by the learned irother , and the pleasure his timely visit had afforded all the
brethren . I he motion was cordiall y agreed to and ordered to be inserted on the minutes of the proceedings . Bro . Pope in acknowledging the compliment paid to him expressed his gratification in attending a lodge in a town where he had been officiall y connected for very many years , where everything appeared to be worked so well , and where all the needful arrangements has been carried out with such
zeal and precision , he could not hel p referring to the great courtesy and kindness extended to him by the Magistrates generally , and the Mayor of the borough in particular , who were always ready and willing to afford him every possible assistance and anticipate his every wish . The
Mayor , the W . M . of to-day , was the youngest Magistrate on the bench , but his acquaintance with him had been such as to satisfy him that he was a true type of an Englishman , frank , open , and straightforward , and it had afforded him great satisfaction to be present to welcome his admission amongst the rulers of the Craft .
The lodge room was most tastefully decorated and adorned with many banners the property of private members of the St . George ' s and other lodges , with their respective arms and crests elegantly embroidered thereon , and were arranged under the direction of Bro . Blain , an old Mason and P . M . of this lodge . " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by the visiting brethren , and the lodge was closed .
Banquet was prepared under the able supervision of Bro . Priestley and Mrs . Priestley , whose efforts were heartily appreciated and gave the greatest satisfaction to the brethren . The musical brethren mustered in force and contributed materially to the success of the meeting , which was the most successful Masonic gathering in Bolton for some years , and will be long remembered by those who had the privilege of being present on the occasion .
