Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

generally of the Hyde Park Lodge , —I do not know where 1 am to find words to thank you for your most acceptable presentation . There is one thing , it will be a great consolation when it arrives at home . Brethren , iG years ago my wife became blind ; a clock is her constant companion , and you may be sure an article of that description will ever be in her remembrance , for we greatly love one another . 1 am sure that it will be a source

of great rejoicing to her mind when 1 ten her of such an unexpected thing , as indeed it is to myself . I must be brief of speech , but 1 must thank those brethren who have forwarded this kind movement for my benefit . Believe me , 1 sincerely thank you , and from the bottom of my heart . You have heard thekind remarks of my friend , Bro . Gellion , and I trust during my long service I have given satisfaction . I always try to do my duty to everybody . I never became

a Jack-in-office . I instructed those who were entrusted to me for guidance for the best interests of our common employers , the Great Western Railway Company , and of the public . 1 was ever told , and taught them , to look after the comfort of the public and so enhance the interests of the Company . I am very happy to say I have had many manifestations of approval from the highest in the land and from the lowliest individual in the world . For in little

attentions and instructions what to do when travelling , especially poor people have always commended themselves to my mind . It has come within my province to be in the society of the highest . It was my privilege from 1 S 50 to 1 S 72 always to meet Royalty whenever they travelled on the Great Western line . I have talked with every member of the Royal Family , and at all times I have carried out their instructions without the slightest trouble to anyone . To the

general public , also , it has been my privilege always to give satisfaction . 1 trust I may still continue to do that sort of thing as long as the G . A . O . T . U . permits me . 1 am greatly thankful to him for the great and good help vouchsafed 13 me . It is not the first time 1 hive experienced the appreciation of my brother officers , and someof the public , for in 1 SS 0 , and in this ronm , 1 was presented with this valuable watch . Worshipful sir , I should like you to

read the inscription upon it . The W . AI . read the inscription as follows : "Presented to Wm . Craig by valued friends in appreciation of his uniform kindness and civility extended over a period of many years . January , 1 SS 0 . " It is a very pleasing thing to know , brethren , that , having gained this in 1 SS 0 , 1 have been steadfast in my duties in every way , so that 1 have maintained the character that

gave me this and your most acceptable present . It is an instruction in Alasonry where it says "And keep me steadfast , " and I hope I have proved myself an acceptable brother in Alasonry . I trust that I may always continue in your favour , and believe me the greatest value that I put upon everything is your estimation . 1 was quite unprepared for anything of this description , and I hope you will accept what I have said in all sincerity .

Snowden Kirk , LP . AL 1716 ; VV . Harris , LP . AL 1 G 62 ; XV . XX' . Johnson , S 13 ; J . j . Tyler , S 9 S ; A Holmes , 225 G ; and C Al . Holland , 1804 . The lodge having been opened , Bro . Alfred Thorn was duly passed to the Degree of F . C . This being the annual election meeting the by-laws of the lodge were read by the Secretary , after which , on the ballot being taken for the W . AL for the ensuing year , the brethren ' s unanimous vote

was in favour of Bro . W . Maxfield Mead , the S . W ., Bro . John Collier was for the 12 th time elected 'Treasurer , and Bro . C Sheppard , Tyler . The usual Past Alaster ' s jewel was unanimously voted tothe retiring W . AL The Auditors ' of accounts appointed were Bros . C II . Flynn , G . VV . Holmes , and Vv . G . W . AL , then formally presented a complete set of gauntlets and wands to the lodge which was much appreciated by the brethren , who at once tendered him their hearty vote ol thanks . Other business having been gone through and propositions received for the next meeting , the lodge adjourned to refreshment , which was enlivened by some songs capitally rendered by Bros . A . Holmes , H . VV . Boorer , J . Young , E . Hambridge , and others .

Shadwell Clerke Lodge ( No . 1910 ) . —The memory of the distinguished brother from whom this lodge derives its name , promises , indeed , to be kept in green remembrance for many a long day . lt is barely a year ago that one of the largest gatherings ever known in a private lodge assembled to support the then Grand Secretary , who had kindly come forward at a critical moment to assume the office of W . AI . and occupy thc chair of thc

Shadwell Clerke Lodge . I hose who were privileged to be present on that occasion can never forget the great and imposingceremony of installation . It was impressively conducted by an exalted ruler in thc Craft in the presence of nearly all the Grand Officers and a host of warm and sympathising friends . Alas , Bro . Col . Shadwell Clerke never ocupied that chair a second time . We unfortunately know too well the sad details of his loss , so soon , so very soon , after

this very interesting scene . But the crowded gathering on Monday , the jSth ult ., to witness and celebrate the installation of Bro . Geo . J . Reed , P . AL 12 SS , was a convincing proof of the warm interest with which this lodge is regarded , not merely by its members and the Craft generally , but more especially by the ollicers of Grand

Lodge and thu leading representatives of the different Degrees of Alasonry . 'The proceedings commenced by the passing of two initiates of the lodge . This ceremony was conducted in an admirable manner by the very popular Treasurer , Bro . Charles Belton , P . AL The chair was then occupied by Bro . C . Fitzgerald Alatier , and Bro . Geo . J ,

Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

Reed , having been presented by Bro . Alather , was duly installed in a manner so peculiarly imoressiveas to suggest the belief that the Installing Officer had difficulty in dispersing the cloud of sorrow with which memory could not fail to shadow the proceedings . Our space will not permit us to give a full list of all present on this occasion ; we can but give the names of those

best known . Of Grand Oflicers we must name Bros . E . Letchworth , G . Sec . ; Richard Eve , P . G . Treas . ; Capt . N . G . Philips , A . B . Cook , Rev . J . S . Brownrigg , Mather , C . A . Driver , C . F . Alatier , Crossland Hay , C . Belton , Williamson , Balfour Cockburn , Gilles , Howard Thompson , Jabez Church , Gordon Aliller , Thos . Wye , G . Holmes , and others . The usual banquet took place at Freemasons' Tavern ;

but before we close this account we must not omit to chronicle two very pleasing incidents ; first , the presentation to the lodge of a most excellent print of the late Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , by the present Grand Secretary , Bro . E . Letchworth , and , secondly , a most touching allusion to the services and illustrious Alasonic career of the late Bro . Clerke by the Grand Chaplain , Bro . the Rev . Studholme Brownrigg , when returning thanks for the toast of "The Grand Officers . "

AL 9 6 , as a joining member , and the

initiation by the W . AL , Bro . J . F . Hepburn , C . C , of his eldest son , Air . H . Frankland Hepburn . The meeting was well attended and the members were gratified to have present Bros . E .

Geo . J ,

Reed , having been presented by Bro . best known . Of Grand Oflicers we must name Bros . E . Letchworth , G . Sec . ; Richard Eve , P . G . Treas . ; Capt . N . G . Philips , A . B . Cook , Rev . J . S . Brownrigg , Mather , C . A . but before we close this account we must not omit to chronicle two very pleasing incidents ; first , the presentation to the lodge of a most excellent print of the late Bro . "
