a Jack-in-office . I instructed those who were entrusted to me for guidance for the best interests of our common employers , the Great Western Railway Company , and of the public . 1 was ever told , and taught them , to look after the comfort of the public and so enhance the interests of the Company . I am very happy to say I have had many manifestations of approval from the highest in the land and from the lowliest individual in the world . For in little

attentions and instructions what to do when travelling , especially poor people have always commended themselves to my mind . It has come within my province to be in the society of the highest . It was my privilege from 1 S 50 to 1 S 72 always to meet Royalty whenever they travelled on the Great Western line . I have talked with every member of the Royal Family , and at all times I have carried out their instructions without the slightest trouble to anyone . To the

general public , also , it has been my privilege always to give satisfaction . 1 trust I may still continue to do that sort of thing as long as the G . A . O . T . U . permits me . 1 am greatly thankful to him for the great and good help vouchsafed 13 me . It is not the first time 1 hive experienced the appreciation of my brother officers , and someof the public , for in 1 SS 0 , and in this ronm , 1 was presented with this valuable watch . Worshipful sir , I should like you to

" It is a very pleasing thing to know , brethren , that , having gained this in 1 SS 0 , 1 have been steadfast in my duties in every way , so that 1 have maintained the character that

gave me this and your most acceptable present . It is an instruction in Alasonry where it says "And keep me steadfast , " and I hope I have proved myself an acceptable brother in Alasonry . I trust that I may always continue in your favour , and believe me the greatest value that I put upon everything is your estimation . 1 was quite unprepared for anything of this description , and I hope you will accept what I have said in all sincerity .

Shadwell Clerke Lodge ( No . 1910 ) . —The memory of the distinguished brother from whom this lodge derives its name , promises , indeed , to be kept in green remembrance for many a long day . lt is barely a year ago that one of the largest gatherings ever known in a private lodge assembled to support the then Grand Secretary , who had kindly come forward at a critical moment to assume the office of W . AI . and occupy thc chair of thc

Shadwell Clerke Lodge . I hose who were privileged to be present on that occasion can never forget the great and imposingceremony of installation . It was impressively conducted by an exalted ruler in thc Craft in the presence of nearly all the Grand Officers and a host of warm and sympathising friends . Alas , Bro . Col . Shadwell Clerke never ocupied that chair a second time . We unfortunately know too well the sad details of his loss , so soon , so very soon , after

this very interesting scene . But the crowded gathering on Monday , the jSth ult ., to witness and celebrate the installation of Bro . Geo . J . Reed , P . AL 12 SS , was a convincing proof of the warm interest with which this lodge is regarded , not merely by its members and the Craft generally , but more especially by the ollicers of Grand

Lodge and thu leading representatives of the different Degrees of Alasonry . 'The proceedings commenced by the passing of two initiates of the lodge . Alather , was duly installed in a manner so peculiarly imoressiveas to suggest the belief that the Installing Officer had difficulty in dispersing the cloud of sorrow with which memory could not fail to shadow the proceedings .
