COLCHESTER . —United Lodge ( No . 697 ) . — Presentation to the Secretary . —The monthly meetof this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 25 th ult ., nd there was an unusually large attendance of members a nd visitors , it having been understood that a testimonial Lhirli had been subscribed for by the members ) was to be presented to Bro . Thomas Rix , P . M ., P . P . G . Swd . Br ., in vaiuaoie services to uic

recognition ot nis long anu luugc as its Secretary . In making the presentation , the VV . M ., Bro . G . Pung Hazell , referred to the long and valuable services which Bro . Rix had rendered to the lodge , and his love and zeal for Freemasonry in general . He alluded to the fact that Bro . Rix had twice passed the chair , and that for a space of nearly 20 years he had filled the office of

Secretary , without receiving any fee or reward , beyond a mere verbal recognition ot his services . During the whole of that long period he had only been absent twice , and it occurred to one of the oldest Past Masters ( Bro . T . Eustace ) that such devotion to Freemasonry , and such faithful service to the lodge , was deserving of more than verbal acknowledgment , and a subscription was started for the

purpose of presenting Bro . Rix with a substantial mark of their appreciation of his labours . The members of the lodge most readily contributed towards the fund , and he now had the pleasure of asking Bro . Rix's acceptance of a marble timepiece and an illuminated address , " in grateful recognition of his long , valued , and efficient services as Secretary . ''

Bro . Rix , in response , thanked the Worshipful Master for the way in which he had spoken of his services , which he said were rendered without the hope or expectation of reward . The duties of Secretary of such a lodge as that , numbering as it did betweeen So and go members , were no light matter ; and had it not been for the valuable assistance he always received from his friend , the P . G .

Secretary , Bro . Railing , he should never have been able to cope with the difficulties which often presented themselves . However , so long as he had health and strength , and so long as it was the wish of the brethren , he should be happy to continue in the office which he had filled , he hoped to the satisfaction of all , for so many years . He thanked the brethren from the bottom of his heart for their very

Bro . Wheatley proposed the toast of "The VV . M . " in very flattering terms . The VV . M ., in reply , expressed his gratification in being elected to fill the chair of so large and prosperous a lodge . He would do his best to still further enhance its prosperity . He had been instrumental in introducing seven members , who had all done credit to the lodge .

The toast of "The Installing Officer" followed , and was received with great enthusiasm . Bro . Wheatley made a modest speech in reply . He said that he owed a great deal of his knowledge to the untiring efforts and co-operation of three of their Past Masters , in the persons of Bros . Jessett , Walls , and Spearing , who hap rendered him every assistance towards perfecting him

in his duties . It would ever remain a great source of gratification to him that his efforts had received so much appreciation , and as he personally considered far above his merits . "The Visitors" followed , and gave Bros . Moorman , W . M . ; Croaker , W . M . ; Snelson , P . M . ; Harvey , P . M . ; and Chandler , P . M . ; an opportunity of saying many complimentary things in respect to the working and

prosperity of No . 1512 . Bro . W . Spearing replied in appropriate terms for " The Past Masters , " and Bros . Jessett and Walls for " The Treasurer and Secretary , " and "The Masonic Charities . " The toast of " The Officers" concluded the programme . The W . M . is to be congratulated upon the success of the day's proceedings , and for the able manner in which he presided over so large a gathering .

Br ., and Prov . G . Sec , for his kindness in being present and assisting in the installation ceremony . There being no further business , the lodge was closed . ' The brethren subsequently celebrated the Festival of St .

John with a banquet , the catering and serving of which was a triumph to Bro . John Walton , the affable host , and gave the greatest satisfaction to all . After the banquet the W . M . proposed , in appropriate terms , the toasts of " Her Most Gracious Majesty the Oueen" and " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . " ~ Bro . W . Bowden , P . P . G . Purst ., proposed "The Right

Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon , M . W . Pro G . M . " Bro . John Slyman , I . P . M ., proposed ' "The Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , R . W . D . G . M ., and R . W . Prov . G . M . of West Lancashire , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and coupled with it the name of Bro . Goodacre , P . G . Swd . Br . All these toasts were well received , especially the last

mentioned , and were heartily drunk . In referring to Bro . Goodacre , Bro . Slyman said it was a source of great pleasure to the members of the Urmston Lodge to see Bro . Goodacre amongst them , who was the founder and father of their lodge , and its oldest P . M . Bro . Slyman also spoke of the magnanimous manner in which Bro . Goodacre had ( after coaching him into the duties of

Installing Master ) elected to stand aside and see his pupil perform the ceremony , contenting himself with investing the officers . Bro . Slyman expressed himself very grateful for this concession and kindness . Bro . Goodacre , in reply , said it was very gratifying to see a child of his like the Urmston Lodge grow up and flourish as it had done . It was 10 years since it was consecrated ,

and he was installed first Master , since which time three of its membeis had received Prov . Grand honours , viz ., their first candidate , who was made Prov . Grand Chaplain , then himself , who was made Prov . Grand Registrar , and , lastly , Bro . E . L . Littler , who had recently been appointed Prov . Grand Pursuivant , and this was he ( Bro . Goodacre ) thought a test and proof they had initiated the right kind of men .

He had been very pleased to see Bro . Slyman perform the installation ceremony so smoothly and satisfactorily as he had done . Bro . Goodacre , in speaking of the desirability for uniform working , gave a short history of the progress of Freemasonry since theyear 1717 . In that year , and up to 174 6 , there was a ruling body who called themselves Ancient Masons , and had their particular style of working ; but in

the latter year another ruling body sprung into existence , and differed in their work from the former . In 1 S 13 the first-named body , who were governed by H . R . H . the Duke of Kent , and the second by H . R . H . the Duke of Sussex , amalgamated ; the present Grand Lodge of England was the result . The Emulation Lodge of Improvement working was practised by the Grand Lodge , and consequently Bro .

Goodacre expressed his opinion that the same should be observed in all lodges under its rule . Bro . Goodacre ' s remarks were listened to with great attention by all present , and were much applauded . Bro . Gittens proposed " The Health of Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston , V . W . D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . G . Officers , Present and Past . "

would do all in his power to promulgate the tenets and principles of Freemasonry , and by his future conduct would justify the confidence reposed in him . The toast was well received , and Bro . Bone ' s health heartily drunk , after which Bro . E , L . Littler sang " Here's to his health . "

The Worshipful Master , in reply , after thanking Bro . Slyman for his kind remarks , said he fully appreciated the great honour that had been conferred upon him , and said he should do all in his power to maintain the prestige the lodge enjoyed , and promote the good fellowship and harmony which characterised its members .
