Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

if evidence was wanting , they had that evening seen an act of courtesy by Bro . Hughes , the I . P . M ., who , though able and willing to perform the installation ceremony in an excellent manner , had , by an act of kindness and Masonic affection , given way , and allowed the esteemed Secretary , Bro . Osborn , P . M ., to render the ceremony . That Prov . Grand Officer could come forward and take

the duty at a moment ' s notice , and take it in a perfect , able , and feeling manner , which proved that the Prov . Grand Master made wise selections in his officers , for they not only won their purple , but were anxious to come to the front and do anything they could for the dignity and honour of the lodges to which they belonged . It was a great source of pleasure to him to come to such a lodge , where

everything was so well done , and where good feeling and unanimity were so much exhibited . He must speak of the good working . He was pleased to see a new W . M . come forward so perfect in his duties , who performed the initiation ceremony in an excellent manner . He must express his admiration at the magnificent manner in which the Deacons worked . They all knew the confusion which arose when there were

two or more candidates if it was not worked properly , for in that case it would not possibly impress the initiates . The manner in which the Deacons worked was excellent , there being no confusion , and everything being done in proper order , and it was a great gratification for him to see it , and a great credit to the lodge . He was deeply grateful for the kind way in which the toast had been received . Bro . j . Hughes , I . P . M ., proposed "The Worshipful

Master , " and said it had fallen to his lot to assist in installing a Provincial Grand Officer into the chair that evening . The choice of the brethren in selecting Bro . Wright Prov . G . Org . had given every satisfaction , and the working of their W . M . would please the brethren more every time . He was reminded that time was short , and he would therefore at once give the toast . Bro . W . Wright , P . G . Org . Middx ., VV . M ., thanked the I . P . M . for the kind words used in which the toast had

been proposed . Having been elected and placed in the position of Worshipful Master , he should endeavour to fulfil the duties , and not disgrace the post . He was the second initiate in the lodge who had attained the chair , and had been the Organist for many years . He had worked hard for the position , and had had the help of his dear old fatherin-law , Bro . Osborn , P . M ., and of Bro . Weeden , P . M ., in

the lodge of instruction . He had tried to do his best , and no Mason could do more . He was pleased to initiate two of his brothers and an old friend , and believed they would prove a great acquisition to the lodge . Bro . S . Wright had long wished to be a Mason , but had waited until he ( the W . M . ) reached the chair . He would do his duty as a Mason , and try to act as their W . M . should , so that when

he left the position it would be a credit to them and himself . "The Initiates " having been heartily honoured , and responded to , the W . M . gave "The Visitors . " Bro . Cox , W . M . 1839 , returned sincere thanks . They had been impressed with the admirable manner in which the initiation ceremony was conducted , and congratulated the lodge on its W . M .

Bro . Geo . R . Langley , P . M ., W . M . elect 2381 , also responded , and said the pleasure of his second visit had not diminished , but had exceeded that of his first visit . He congratulated the lodge on the able manner in which the whole of the ceremonies had been carried out , and on the high position it held in the province as evidenced by the provincial collars he saw . It had accorded him great

pleasure to be present at Bro . Wright ' s installation , and asked to be allowed to congratulate that brother on his excellent rendering of the initiation ceremony . "The Installing Master , Past Masters , Treasurer , and Secretary , " was next proposed by the W . M . Having referred to the Past Masters , he said he was very much indebted to Bro . Osborn , P . M ., Sec , for what Masonic

knowledge he had . Bro . Osborn initiated , passed , and raised him , exalted him in the Royal Arch , and had installed him that evening into the chair . He regretted the absence of Bro . Bird , P . M ., through illness , but hoped he would soon recover . Bro . Hurran , Treas ., had rendered valuable service to the lodge , and deserved the gratitude of the members .

Bro . J . Hughes , I . P . M ., said he was glad to be succeeded by such an honourable brother as their W . M . He felt a certain sense of disappointment at not installing Bro . Wright , but the circumstances were peculiar and pressing , and he could not refuse to give way to Bro . Osborn . He was pleased to think he had given satisfaction , for he had always endeavoured to perform the ceremonies attached to

his office to the best of his ability . Bro . J . Osborn , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., Sec , said he was in a peculiar position to whicli he had looked forward with the greatest pleasure . He had the honour some years ago of initiating his son , but unfortunately the Great Architect took him away before he was enabled to fill the Mastership of the lodge . The next pleasurable thing that occurred to him had been the opportunity , for which he cordially

thanked the I . P . M ., of installing the one he loved best on this earth , his son-in-law , into the chair that evening . Bro . Wright was the second initiate of the lodge , but from reticence on his own part had not reached the chair before . He was quite sure whatever might be Bro . Wright ' s shortcomings that he would prove a good W . M . of the lodge . Looking round the table at the number present to support him , he was sure he would also be a popular and genial Master .

"lhe Officers" was duly honoured , after which the Tyler ' s toast closed one of the most successful gatherings ever held by this lodge . An excellent selection of vocal music was performed under the direction of Bro . A . J . Wright . Miss J essie Hotine

sang two songs in a pleasing manner , and Mrs . Horace Banks rendered " Angus Macdonald " in a charming and sympathetic style that was much appreciated by the brethren , 'lhe humorous element was well sustained by Bro . Sam Wright , and amongst others who assisted were Bros . Arthur Weston , James Bayne , and W . W . Lee .

The addresses to the Wardens and brethren were given in his usual impressive manner by Bro . j . T . Thorp , P . M . A Past Master ' s jewel was presented to the retiring W . M ., Bro . W . H . Barrow , by the W . M . in a felicitous speech , and was gracefully acknowledged by the

recipient . The Treasurer ' s report , as also that of the Stewards , was received and approved . Bro . J . T . Thorp , P . M ., was unanimously elected as Preceptor to represent the lodge at the Union Lodge of Instruction during the session 1891-2 . Bro . Thorp , in acknowledging the honour done to him , said that he had held that office now for a number of years , and while accepting it with gratitude ,

should not like' to feel he was preventing any one else from occupying that important position . Two propositions for initiation having been handed in , Bro . S . S . Partridge made a statement with respect to the library in the Freemasons' Hall , saying that the Library Committee were anxious to make it more useful , and more easily accessible to members than it had hitherto been . With

this object in view it was thought proper that as the member of the lodge already on the Committee had been appointed Secretary and Chief Librarian , another member should be chosen to fill the vacancy and so strengthen the Committee . Bro . S . S . Partridge proposed , and Bro . VV . Kelly seconded , the appointment of Bro . the Rev . H . S . Biggs to represent the lodge on the Library Committee .

1 his was supported b y the VV . M ., and carried unanimously . Bro . the Rev . H . S . Biggs suitably acknowledged the honour conferred upon him . A number of letters of apology were read , and " Hearty good wishes " were given from Provincial Grand Lodge , and from Lodges 279 , 451 , 541 , 1007 , 1265 , 1330 , 1391 , 1561 , and 20 S 1 . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren to the number of TO sat down to the banquet , after which a long

list of toasts was disposed of . The Worshipful Master proposed "The Queen and Craft , " which was received with musical honours . With the next toast proposed by the VV . M ., " The M . W . Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and the Grand Lodge" were coupled the names of Bros . W , Kelly , D . P . G . M ., and S . S . Partridge , P . A . G . D . C . England . This toast was also received with musical honours , and ,

in reply , Bro . W . Kelly said that it was 45 years since he was installed as the first W . M . of the John of Gaunt Lodge , and though owing to his increasing years and business engagements he had been unable to visit the lodge as often as he should like to have done , yet now he had more leisure he hoped to come among them more often . With respect to

Grand Lodge , he begged to thank the brethren present for the very cordial reception they had given to the toast . Bro . S . S . Partridge briefly acknowledged the toast . The W . M . then proposed "The P . G . M ., the Right Hon . the Earl Ferrers , the D . P . G . M ., and the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge . " In reply , Bro . the Rev . C . Henton VVood , M . A ., P . G . S .,

thanked the brethren for the hearty manner in which they had received the toast , and remarked that he thought the Province of Leicesterand Rutland was unique in one respect . Itwas proud to possess in Bro . Kelly an I . P . P . G . M ., an officer which no other province had , so far as his recollection went . The I . P . M . then proposed "The VV . M ., " who , in reply ,

expressed his thanks for the hearty manner in which the toast had been received , and requested the assistance of the P . M . ' s to maintain the working of the lodge in its present very satisfactory manner . " The Visitors and Sister Lodges " was next proposed by the VV . M ., and was replied to by Bros .
