people that on earth do dwell , " was first sung , followed by the Psalms xcv ., xcvii ., and cl . Bro . Rev . W . H . Hornby Steer read thc Lesson , I . John , iii ., 1 to 25 ; after this followed the Nunc Dimittis ; and the anthem " Thine , O Lord , is the greatness" ( Kent ) was sung before the sermon , Bro . W . H . Longhurst , Prov . G . Org ., most efficiently presiding at the organ . The sermon was preached by Bro . thc Rev . J . Stewart , M . A ., Prov . Grand Chaplain , from the words , " Whosever shall do thc will of my Father that is in heaven , thc same is my brethren , and sister , and mother . "
The banquet took p lace in thc Sussex Assembly Room , the Prov . Grand Master presiding , and about 200 brothers being present . Bro . A . T . Dartnall , the successor to Bro . W . S . Parker , of the Pantiles , was thc caterer , and the menu was an excellent one . Bro . Earl AMHERST gave " The Oueen and the Craft , " following on after the National Anthem with "H . R . ft . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " " God bless the Prince of Wales " being sung .
The PROV . GRAND MASTER then proposed " Ihe Earl of Lathom , Pro Grand Master ; the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Deputy Grand Mastcr ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " remarking on the great labours and time they had devoted to the brotherhood , and the regret he felt that Bro . Sir John Monckton , an old Kentish man , and thc Prov . G . M . of Yorkshire , were not able to be present . But still they had there the Grand Treasurer of England , Bro . George Everett , and Bro . Smith , thc Deputy
Prov . G . M . of Yorkshire , and with their names he would associate the toast . Bro . EVERETT , who first responded , after alluding to the Chairman as one of the most popular Prov . Grand Masters of England , expressed his great appreciation at spending such a delightful day in Freemasonry , which , as thev knew , was one of the most striking and impressive brotherhoods thc world had ever known , and he believed that they were entitled to the best thanks for carrying out those grand principles on which their Order was founded .
Bro . SMITH ,- next responding , cordially reciprocated the good feelings which had been expressed . Bro . J . SMITH EASTES , D . P . G . M ., proposed " Bro . thc Earl Amherst , Prov . Grand Master , " dilating on his many good qualities , and the valuable assistance he had given to the Masons of Kent at a time it was most required . Hc ' added that whilst there were 58 lodges and 3500 members in Kent , there was yet room for many more .
Bro . Earl AMHERST , in responding , mentioned that that was the 31 st occasion on which he had appeared in that capacity . They had during the past year , he mentioned , added one new lodge to their roll , and one new chapter had also been organised . He thankfully acknowledged thc hearty
support he had received from Kentish Masons when he . occupied thc position of Chairman at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . During the past year they had grown peacefully and prosperously , and he thanked them heartily for the unfailing support they had given him , and he hoped they would long continue as prosperous and united .
• Bro . Earl . AMHERST next gave the toast of " lhe Deputy Prov . G . M ., Bro . J . Smith Eastes , " in complimentary terms , and expressed his opinion that no Provincial Grand Master ever had a more faithful adviser and wise
counsellor than he had in Bro . J . Smith Eastes . Bro . J . SMITH EASTES responded in grateful terms , alluding to the length of time he had been connected with Masonry , and the proud privilege he felt in occupying his present office . Earl AMHERST having to attend a Court function in London was obliged to leave at this stage , and
Bro . J . SMITH EASTES , who succeeded to the chair , then proposed " The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " coupled with the names ofthe Prov . S-G . W ., Bro . A . T . Simpson , W . M . S 74 , and Bro . Captain W . H . Tylden-Pattenson , P . M . 1854 , P . S . G . W . In response Bro . SIMPSON , on behalf of the Present Provincial Grand Officers and himself , returned thanks , gracefully alluding to the honour paid
through him to the lodge which he had the privilege to represent . That lodge was by no means insensible to the responsibilities it had incurred ; thc members recognised the great services which were expected of them , and it would be their duty during the following year to devote their energies to carry out the great objects of their noble Craft . Bro . Captain TYLDEN-PATTENSON also responded to the toast .
Ihe remaining toasts were" The Visitors , " " The Masonic Charities , " and "The Holmesdale Lodge , No . S 74 , and the Pantiles Lodge , No . 2200 , " the respective Masters—Bros . A . T . SIMPSON , W . M . 8 74 , and TOM RYDER , W . M . 2200—responding . The Tyler ' s toast was responded to by Bro . BOULTER , who , it should be mentioned , was ver } - energetic throughout the da } ' in preparing the lodo-e rooms and in the performance of his duties .
During the evening a selection of vocal music , under the direction of Bro . F . H . Cozens , was performed by Miss Jessie Griffin , Bros . J . A . Brown , Edward Dalzell , F . H . Cozens , and Charles Ackerman , Mr . F . H . Cozens accompanying . It remains to be said that Bro . R . Stevenson was the Secretary , and that he attended to the wealth of detail in connection with thc occasion with considerable ability , assisted by Bro . H . Harris , joint Secretary .
A pleasant feature in connection with the visit to Tunbridge Wells was the presentation of the new edition of " Pelton ' s Guide , " bound in purple covers , with gold lettering , to the principal visitors , II

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF MIDDLESEX .
A meeting of this Provincial Grand Lodge was held at the Town Hall , Hounslow , on Saturday , the 27 th ult ., under the presidency of Bro . Colonel Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., P . G . W ., Provincial Grand Master , when there was a large attendance of Provincial Grand Officers and brethren . The Provincial Grand Lodge having been formally opened , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . The Audit Committee ' s
report , which was unanimously adopted , showed a substantial balance , notwithstanding thc grants for charitable purposes amounted to £ 76 during the year . Thc Charity Committee ' s report was also very satisfactory , only one application for relief being received , as against two the previous year , the Committee being of opinion that this was in a great measure due to the care exercised by lodges in the admission of candidates . I he next business on the agenda was a motion b y Bro . WM . DODD , P . P . G . D ., asking that each lodge in the province should pledge itself to contribute £ 1 annually to produce an annuity of ^ 40 to be granted to an annuitant to be elected by Provincial Grand Lodge . After a short discussion the motion was by leave withdrawn .
Bro . IHRVI'P , D . P . G . M ., in moving a vote of thanks to Bro . Pritchard , P . G . Treas ., drew attention to the fact that although exceptionally liberal grants were made , thc balance was increased by ^ 35 . Bro . PRITCHARD , P . P . G . Trerts ., returned sincere thanks for this mark
of appreciation of the brethren , and also thanked the Prov . Grand Secretary ( or his assistance . He expressed thc opinion that thc office ol Prov . Grand Treasurer should not bc an annual one , but should be extended for two or threc years , as there was a certain amount of work to do which it was only possible to learn with thc assistance of the Prov . Grand Secretary .
On the motion of the DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER , a vote of thanks was accorded the Dalhousie Lodge , and especially Bro . C . A . Walter , P . P . G . D ., for the excellent arrangements made for the meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge . The Prov . Grand Lodge was closed , and the brethren then partook of a substantial repast .
The usua' toasts followed , and were received with the customary heartiness .
In proposing "The Grand Officers , " thc PROV . GRAND MASTER said that Bro . Fenn was the best representative they could have , for he was one of the most able and efficient working Grand Officers they had . There was nothing in the Order Bro . Fenn was not able efficiently to perform—in thc French as well as the English language .
Bro . T . FENN , Pres . Bd . General Purposes , in response , said the Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , was devoted to the interests of the Craft , and his zcai and interest had been intensified b } ' his advancement to his present position . As the brethren had been told , the M . W . G . M . never took any step in Masonry without first consulting the Pro G . M ., than whom
they could have no better or more able adviser . At the last Grand Lodge they had a specimen of the way the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Deputy G . M ., could do his work , and the admirable way he conducted the meeting was an earnest of his future usefulness to thc Craft . With respect to the other Grand Officers , he could assure them that the executive Grand Officers had an earnest desire to do ail they could to create harmony amongst the
brethren and the lodges , and to further thc interests of Masonry in even possible direction . They had no other object in view , and that object , as far as his experience went , had been achieved . Bro . RAYMOND H . THRUPP , D . P . G . M ., proposed " The Provincial Grand Master , Colonel Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., " and said that some of those present mi ght not know that that night was an epoch in that Provincial
Grand Lodge . It was the 21 st year of its meeting . They had been children up to the present time , but were now men , and could look any other Pro \ - Grand Lodge in the face , and hold up their heads with 40 lodges in the province . This had been done to a great extent by thc good working an hearty support of thebrethren in the province , but itwas mainly owing t °
the kindness and genial support given to the province by Bro . Sir Franc-Burdett . Their Prov . Grand Master has shown himself a good Mason an a kind and courteous gentleman , who welcomed the junior Mason m ' ¦ _* province as he did the oldest Past Master , and he had won for hinisel < name and a reputation that no other brother would ever gain in that provinc

M . I . Boys , 15 guineas ; and R . M . B . I ., 30 guineas , on the occasion of its Jubilee Festival next year .
I he next business on the agenda was a motion b y Bro . WM . DODD , P . P . G . D ., asking that each lodge in the province should pledge itself to contribute £ 1 annually to produce an annuity of ^ 40 to be granted to an annuitant to be elected by Provincial Grand Lodge . After a short discussion the motion was by leave withdrawn .
Bro . IHRVI'P , D . P . G . M ., in moving a vote of thanks to Bro . Pritchard , P . G . Treas ., drew attention to the fact that although exceptionally liberal grants were made , thc balance was increased by ^ 35 . Bro . PRITCHARD , P . P . G . Trerts ., returned sincere thanks for this mark
of appreciation of the brethren , and also thanked the Prov . Grand Secretary ( or his assistance . He expressed thc opinion that thc office ol Prov . Grand Treasurer should not bc an annual one , but should be extended for two or threc years , as there was a certain amount of work to do which it was only possible to learn with thc assistance of the Prov . Grand Secretary .
On the motion of the DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER , a vote of thanks was accorded the Dalhousie Lodge , and especially Bro . C . A . Walter , P . P . G . D ., for the excellent arrangements made for the meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge . The Prov . Grand Lodge was closed , and the brethren then partook of a substantial repast .
The usua' toasts followed , and were received with the customary heartiness .
In proposing "The Grand Officers , " thc PROV . GRAND MASTER said that Bro . Fenn was the best representative they could have , for he was one of the most able and efficient working Grand Officers they had . There was nothing in the Order Bro . Fenn was not able efficiently to perform—in thc French as well as the English language .
Bro . T . FENN , Pres . Bd . General Purposes , in response , said the Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , was devoted to the interests of the Craft , and his zcai and interest had been intensified b } ' his advancement to his present position . As the brethren had been told , the M . W . G . M . never took any step in Masonry without first consulting the Pro G . M ., than whom
they could have no better or more able adviser . At the last Grand Lodge they had a specimen of the way the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Deputy G . M ., could do his work , and the admirable way he conducted the meeting was an earnest of his future usefulness to thc Craft . With respect to the other Grand Officers , he could assure them that the executive Grand Officers had an earnest desire to do ail they could to create harmony amongst the
brethren and the lodges , and to further thc interests of Masonry in even possible direction . They had no other object in view , and that object , as far as his experience went , had been achieved . Bro . RAYMOND H . THRUPP , D . P . G . M ., proposed " The Provincial Grand Master , Colonel Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., " and said that some of those present mi ght not know that that night was an epoch in that Provincial
Grand Lodge . It was the 21 st year of its meeting . They had been children up to the present time , but were now men , and could look any other Pro \ - Grand Lodge in the face , and hold up their heads with 40 lodges in the province . This had been done to a great extent by thc good working an hearty support of thebrethren in the province , but itwas mainly owing t °
the kindness and genial support given to the province by Bro . Sir Franc-Burdett . Their Prov . Grand Master has shown himself a good Mason an a kind and courteous gentleman , who welcomed the junior Mason m ' ¦ _* province as he did the oldest Past Master , and he had won for hinisel < name and a reputation that no other brother would ever gain in that provinc
