MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold its next regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday next at 4 p . m . The regular monthly meeting of the Council of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will be held at Freemasons ' Hall to-morrow ( Saturday ) at 3 p . m .

Bro . Dr . Ralph Gooding , P . G . D ., has been elected a member of the Court of the Worshipful Company of Poulters . The 19 th anniversary festival in aid of the Surgical Appliance Society was held at the Hotel Metropole on the evening of the 25 th ult ., the amount of subscriptions

announced by the Secretary being £ 755 . The Handel Festival at the Crystal Palace was brought toaconclusionon Friday , the 26 th ult ., with a performance of " Israel in Egypt . " There was a crowded audience and the enthusiasm with which the efforts of the soloists and chorus were greeted was very great .

By command of the Queen a levee was held by the Prince of Wales at St . James ' s Palace on Saturday last . The Dukes of Edinburgh and Cambridge , Prince Christian , and Prince Henry of Battenberg were present , while the diplomatic and general circles were numerously attended .

The Grand Duke of Hesse , Prince Louis of Battenberg , and Princess Alice of Hesse took leave of her Majesty on Saturday last , and left Windsor Castle for Darmstadt , being accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg as far as Paddington , while Prince Henry of Battenberg took leave of the visitors at Charing Cross .

A _ festival was given by the executive of the German Exhibition on Saturday last in aid of the German Hospital at Dalston and the German Society of Benevolence . The fete took place under Royal patronage , and among the distinguished persons present were the German Ambassador and Prince Pless . The programme was an admirable one and well carried out , and the attendance very large .

The presentation of the gift from the pupils of the Princess Helena College , Ealing , to Princess Christian took place in Buckingham Palace on the 25 th ult . The gift consisted of a large silver centre bowl and four smaller ones for horns , and the presentation was made by the Lady Principal and six of the scholars , to whom her Royal Highness expressed her most cordial thanks for the present .

VVe are desired to state that on and after the 7 th inst . the meetings of the Brixton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1 949 , will be held at the Prince Regent , Dulwich-road , Heme Hill , S . F .. On the above-mentioned date Bro . E . A . Francis , P . M ., Preceptor , will rehearse the ceremony of installation in its entirety , when it is anticipated he will be supported by a goodly number of brethren .

A State concert was given by command of the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Thursday , the 25 th ult ., at which there were present the Prince and Princess of VVales , with the Princesses Victoria and Maud , the Grand Duke of Hesse and his daughter , the Princess Alice , the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh , the Duke and Duchess of Connaught , Prince and Princess Christian , and other members of the Royal Family .

A medal commemorative of the Royal Naval Exhibition has just been issued by the authorities . It is made of white metal , and on the face has a representation of the Eddystone Lighthouse , flanked by effigies of the Camperdown , 1 S 91 , and the Victory , 1 S 05 , while on the reverse is inscribed " In commemoration of the Royal Naval Exhibition . Patron , the Queen . 1 S 91 . "

the Prince and Princess of Wales and their daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , accompanied by Earl Fitzwilliam and a number of distinguished personages visited Rotherham on the 25 th ult . for the purpose of opening a public park which has recently been purchased for 5 ^ 22 , 000 . The Royal visitors , who met with a most enthusiastic reception , returned to Marlborough House the same day .

The Prince and Princess of VVales , accompanied by the Princesses Victoria and Maud , visited Aldershot on Friday , the 26 th ult ., for the purpose of inspecting the 19 th Hussars , who are under orders for India . The Royal party on arriving at the Camp were received by Bro . Lieut .-General Sir Evelyn Wood , V . C , and his Staff . At the close of the proceedings the Prince expressed himself as being well satisfied withthe appearance and discipline of the regiment and the steadiness and precision of its movements .

The Old Etonian dinner in commemoration of the 450 th anniversary of the foundation of Eton College was held at the Hotel Metropole on Saturday last , under the presidency of the Duke of Westminster , among those present being Bros . lt has been arranged that the guard of honour at Guildhall on the occasion of the visit of the Emperor and Empress of Germany to the City next week shall be composed of regular troops . The presentation of the Corporation address will take place in the library , and the luncheon in

the Guildhall . On Saturday next , the nth instant , the Emperor will review a force of volunteers on Wimbledon Common , and afterwards with the Empress will visit the Crystal Palace . On the following day his Majesty will dine , with the Prime Minister and the Marchioness of Salisbury at Hatfield .

The date of the meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Suffolk , which was provisionally fixed for the 31 st of July , has been altered to Friday , August 7 th . The gathering is at Thornham Hall , the seat of the Provincial Grand Master , Lord Henniker .

The directors of the Empire Palace , Limited , have declared the second interim dividend for the present year at the following rates : is . Sd . on each share of £ 1 on which ios . has been paid , and 2 S . 6 d . on eachshare of £ 1 on which 15 s . has been paid , the said interim dividend to be payable on the 7 th inst .

On the occasion of the Volunteer review on Wimbledon Common on Saturday , the nth instant , the Duke of Cambridge will take command of the troops , who will be formed in two divisions , the first being under the command of Bro . Lieut .-Gen . Sir Evelyn VVood , and the second under the Duke of Connaught .

The new Exmoor Lodge at Minehead is making an uncommonly good start . At the monthly meeting recently 12 new members were elected , four of them being initiates , and the P . G . M ., Lord Dungarvan , and the Dep . P . G . M ., Bro . Else , were also elected honorary members . A number of proposals were submitted For consideration at the next meeting , and Bro . Haddon was appointed the delegate on the Charity Organisation Committee of the province .

The invitations issued by the Corporation of London to the dejeuner which will follow the presentation of _ the address of welcome to the Emperor of Germany on Friday next , the ioth instant , have been so generally accepted that it has been found necessary to erect a temporary gallery at the east end of the Guildhall in order to accommodate them all . Bro . Harry Foster , the newly-elected Sheriff of the City of London , is the subject of a biographical notice in the City Press this week . His career has been a busy and useful one in connection with the City and its philanthropic and educational institutions . to place on record their sense of the great loss which they have sustained by the death of Sir Robert Nicholas Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., who for many years was their Treasurer and colleague . Government , subjects connected with the work of this Association . The unexpected decease , in the prime and vigour of life , of one so gifted and so genial as Sir Robert Fowler was , is sorrowfully felt by the Committee ; and they would offer to the family of their late honoured friend this expression of their profound sympathy . During the past few days further interesting relics of Roman London have been discovered by the workmen engaged upon the excavations which are now in progress on the site of Dimsdale's old banking house , Cornhiil . The wall which has been discovered , almost 12 feet in thickness , was probably one of the boundary walls of the old town

of Londiniensis , a stone slab of 12 inches to iS inches in thickness , and of great length , being probably the corner stone of some important building . Many human bones have been found , as well as pieces—broken , of course—of armour . Last week , at a depth of nearly 30 feet , a skull was found embedded in a layer of white clay , and later , portions of leg and arm bones were picked up .

The wall which has been discovered , almost 12 feet in thickness , was probably one of the boundary walls of the old town
