MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS
The " Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar , Diary , and Pocket Book for 1 SS 6 , " has just been issued , it being its sixteenth year of publication . As in previous years , it contains ample particulars respecting every home and foreign Masonic body , of any recognised position , the points in which it differs from its predecessors being an improved , and perhaps , a more concise arrangement of the
contents , and that greater accuracy in the details which is the invariable result of the same careful enquiries , repeated again and again through a long course of years . It contains particulars of all the newest lodges and chapters , even that of the Empire Lodge , which was consecrated as recently as last week , being included . As a guide to the general body of the Craft it will be found invaluable , while in the case of those who travel much , or are members of
several branches of Masonry , it may be considered almost as an indispensible -vade mecum . Bro . Lord Brabourne presided at the last monthly House dinner of the Empire Club for the current year on Wednesday . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Lathom had the honour of being included in Her Majesty's dinner party at Windsor , on Wednesday , the 25 th ult .
Bro , Sir F . Milner , Bart ., one of the defeated candidates at the recent election for York , has been nominated for the Sowerby Division of the VVest Riding ( North ) of Yorkshire . The Queen has been p leased to confer the Garter , rendered vacant by the death of Bro . the Duke of Abereorn , Grand Master of Ireland , on the Marquis of Abergavenny .

P ., was among the guests at the annual dinner of the Scottish Corporation , held at the Freemasons' Tavern on Monday ( St . Andrew's Day ) , under the presidency of the Earl of Iddesleigh . Bro . Plunket , M . P ., H . M . ' s First Commissioner of Works , has taken the initial steps towards having the statue to the memory of the late General Gordon erected in Trafalgar-square , it being supposed it will be placed on the site now occupied by that of the late Bro . General Sir Charles Napier . The Brownrigg Lodge of Instruction , No . 163 S ,
has resumed its meetings for the session at the Alexandra Hotel , Kingston Hill , and the average attendance of brethren from the neighbouring fraternities shows that those who hope to attain to office are not unmindful of the duties which go with honours . Brethren will be cordially welcomed at the meetings , which are held every Monday evening at S p . m . A National Great Priory of the Templar Order
will be held at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Friday next , the nth inst ., at four p . m ., when the report of the Council for the past year will be submitted , and in the event of there being a sufficient number ' of candidates , the Great Prior will hold , under the banner of the Shadwell Clerke Preceptory , a Priory of the Order of Malta for the purpose of installing them members of the Order . The usual banquet will follow at six p . m .
The Loan Collection of Soudanese Relics now and for some time past on view in the Grand Saloon of Drury Lane Theatre deservedly ranks among the principal attractions of the day . The events of which they are a memorial are of recent occurrence , and of so glorious a character , as showing the sterling stuff of which our British battalions are composed , that if the collection
remained open for several months to come , there would certainly be crowds upon crowds of visitors anxious to divide their attention between the exciting and realistic scenes in " Human Nature " relating to the fighting in Egypt and the mementoes of that fighting . The exhibits have been lent by many among the principal actors in the events to which they relate , the list of contributors being
headed b y Bro . General Viscount Wolseley , whose collection , consisting of banners , drums , shields , silver-mounted swords , & c , occupies Trophies i , ii , and iii . Lieut .-Col . Kitchener—Trophies v . and vi . —shows a Mahdi uniform from the battle of Abu Klea , camel saddle and sheepskin rug belonging to a Mahdist Emir killed at Debbeh , a Soudanese Sheikh's robes , crocodile shields , the colonel ' s Arabic
seal as Emir of the Bishareen and Kababdeh Arabs , and a piece of Brussels carpet from Gordon's room at Khartoum . Bro . Vice-Admiral Sir W . Hewett , Trophy viii ., has sent among . many objects of interest the robe of honour and shield given him by the King ^ of Abyssinia . Among Gen . Graham's collection at Trophy ix . is a Soudanese Kourbash , the parting gift from General Gordon when starting for
Khartoum , and a Soudanese easy chair . At I rophy xii . are some curious musical instruments lent by Col . Paget , Scots Guards , and there are several relics of Arabi to be seen in the inner room , the late Egyptian rebel General having presented them to Bro . A . M . Broadley , who was his leading council at the memorable trial at Cairo after
the I el-el-Kebir campaign . It must be very gratifying to Bro . Augustus Harris , to whom we are indebted for the exhibition , that he should have becn able to bring together so large and various a display of relics of recent events in Egypt , and all the more so from the manner in which his efforts have been appreciated by his patrons .

C , who is rector of Long Melford and deservedly respected by his parishioners , was somewhat violently handled during an election riot by a mob of roughs from another district , who , however , were ignorant of our
rev . brother ' s personality . On the 1 st of January , Messrs . Martin and Co ., bankers , of Lombard-street , perhaps the oldest firm in the country , will establish branches at Sidcup and Chislehurst . This house has lately been extending its London business , and is showing afresh a tendency to move with the general increase of population and business .

Messrs. Leoni And Co's Patent Gas Heating And Cooking Apparatus.
MESSRS . LEONI AND CO'S PATENT GAS HEATING AND COOKING APPARATUS .
Very great improvements have been effected of late years in the apparatus in use in large and small establishments for heating and cooking purposes , and there is probably no firm in England which has had more to do in simplifying , perfecting , and cheapening these apparatus than that of Messrs . Leoni and Co ., of the Patent
Adamas Works and Offices , 54-70 , St . Paul-street , New North-road , Islington , N . ; and also Show Rooms , 74 , Strand , W . C . The success achieved by this firm is due to the care and personal supervision bestowed by Messrs . Leoni on every detail of the manufacture , while the perfection to which they have carried their patents is shown by the numerous medals and certificates of honour which have been awarded them at different local and
international exhibitions , and the testimonials they have received from their customers , as well as from men of science . Thus among the more recent honours awarded them may be mentioned three silver medals at the International Electric and Gas Exhibition , Crystal Palace , 1 S 82-3 , and the gold medal at the International Health Exhibition in 1 SS 4—the Inventions Exhibition of this year not being available for the admission of inventions which had been
previously exhibited . Among the testimonials they have received may be mentioned that of Mr . William Whiteley , the well-known "Universal Provider" of Westbournegrove , who , writing in July , 1 SS 1 , mentions having had in use for the five preceding years Mr . Leoni's cooking apparatus , and that it had proved "eminently satisfactory , " having " with the greatest ease and without any interruption " prepared " meals daily for upwards of 1000 persons . "
Sir E . H . Currie , Chairman of the London Hospital ; the Secretary of the Corporation of Birmingham ; and the Lady Superintendant of the National Training School of Cookery , South Kensington , are equally laudatory in their accounts of these cooking stoves . As regards the stoves , kitcheners , & c , Sic , they are of the best material and make ; are sold at prices , according to size and finish , which are moderate , almost beyond conception ; and are very marvels of economy . The kitcheners made of cast
iron range in price from £ 3 15 s ., which is suitable for a family of from four to six persons , the consumption of gas per hour being only 11 cubic feet , while the largest size , suitable for schools , colleges , & c , cost £ 37 , and consumes only 30 cubic feet of gas per hour . If further corroboration is needed , we should advise our friends to visit the manufactory , St . Paul-street , New North-road , N ., where they will be received with courtesy , and we feel sure , will be delighted with what they see .
