Courses of lectures on the " Principles of
Agriculture " will be delivered during the autumn , winter , and spring months by Mr . Bernard Dyer , F . C . S ., F . I . The Dukeof Abercorn , Grand Master ' of Ireland , with the Duchess of Abercorn , and Bro . Lord Claud and Lady Claud Hamilton , have arrived at Baron ' s Court , Newton Stuart , Co . Tyrone . According"to the IIIustrated London News the
will of the late Bro . Leon Emmanuel , of Southampton , was sworn at u . wards of £ 11 , 000 personally . The Right Hon . W . H . Smith , M . P ., distributed the prizes and certificates gained by the students of the Medical Department of King's College , London , on Monday afternoon . The good use of odd minutes has often made all the'difference between a well-informed and an ignorant
person . I he question is often asked , What is a good book to read in spare moments—during the dinner hour , or in a tramcar , or at odd times when one can't get through much , but would like to read a little bit that could be remembered and thought over ? That question has just been answered in a thoroughly practical manner by a firm which lias already gained a world-wide reputation , not only for the extent but for the organisation of its business . Lewis ' s ,
the famous house whose stores and warehouses occupy such a big slice of Market-street , Manchester , have published , under the title of " Lewis ' s Penny Readings , " a neat , handsome volume of 130 pages , consisting of delightful selections from the greatest poets , prose writers , orators , wits , and humorists of the last two hundred years and more . The price of this treasury of interest , amusement and instruction is one single penny , or for 2 \ d . in stamps a
copy can be obtained , forwarded to any address ; and it is surely the most wonderful pennyworth ever issued , even in these days of cheap literature . On Monday evening there was a fine display of the Aurora Borealis , or Northern Lights , visible both in London and the provinces . It was also seen at Dinard by
M . Flammarion , a faint reflection of it being perceptible at the West-end of Paris , about 7 p . m . It is not a little curious that the telegraph wires were affected by the Auiora , especially those running north and south , while those running east and west suffered but little interruption . Hence , during a part of Monday the transmission of telegraphic messages was materially interfered with .
A handsome silver salver , with a suitable inscription , was presented to Bro . George T . Goodinge , joint general manager of the London and South-Westerh Bank , on the occasion of his silver wedding , on Thursday , the 2 Sth ult ., by members of the Lodge of Amity , No . 171 , and of the Clapham Lodge , No . 1 S 18 , of which lodges Bro . Goodinge is now-VV . M . and S . W . respectively . Bro . the Rev . R . J . Simpson , P . G . C . England ,
Incumbent of the Curzon Chapel , Mayfair , will preach in the Chapel Royal Savoy , on the evening of the 15 th inst . The chapel is the smallest ecclesiastical edifice ( excepting St . James's Chapel Royal , which is a private chapel attached to the Palace , for the use of the household ) in London . It is very beautiful , the stained glass reredos being particularly rich . Being a Royal Peculiar , it is not under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of London . For orders
for the service application should be made in writing , addressed to the Chaplain , early in the week , which , if not replied to by Thursday , it must be understood that the seats are all occupied . By Her Majesty ' s command , the inhabitants of the Precinct of Savoy arc admitted ; after that thegeneral public by orders as . far as there may be room . It is expected that every one contribute to the offertory . The number of passengers entering France from
England by way of Dover and Calais has increased considerably from month to month during the present year . During the nine months ending on the last day of September the number amounted to 178 , 078 , showing an increase of i 6 , S 26 over the same period of 1 SS 1 . With the new fast steamers which are being put upon this service it is expected that the traffic will continue to increase at no less rapid rate . Madame Wotrell ' s annual concert at the Brixton
Hall , on Wednesday evening last , was an unqualified success , the large assembly-room being filled , and numbers of persons not provided with tickets being unable to obtain admission by payment at the doors , the programme was lengthy , and contained some charming songs , new to the public , and in several cases accompanied by the composers . The popular beneficiare was warmly welcomed , and was the recipient of many floral offerings , in appreciation of
her talent . Amongst the lady artistes were , in addition to Madame Worrell , Miss Matilda Roby , Miss Emma Buer , Miss Isabel Browning , Miss Pauline Featherby , and Miss Mary Conroy . The charming performances of Mademoiselle Bertha Brousil on the violin are especially deserving of mention . Bros . Turle Lee and John Jefferys asssisted at the pianoforte ; and the vocal talents of Bros . Seymour Smith , Arthur Thompson , Robert Hilton , Frederick Bevan , T . Nettleship , Henry
Baker , J . H . Maunder , and H . Schartau , were also called into requisition . It would be invidious to select any portion of this excellent entertainment for mention beyond the remainder . Indeed , it would be , from the facts that each and all used their best exertions to merit the appreciative support of the audience , very difficult to make a selection . The encores and re-calls were freely made by the delighted listeners , and there can be no doubt that the well-deserved reputation of these annual concerts was considerably enhanced by the merits of the entire performance .
GREAT J EWEL ROIIHRISS . —The public are becoming so accustomed to reading reports ot jewfl robberies that numbers of the nobility are taking steps to secure their valuables from the attack of the modem burglar , and the demand for Milners ' jewellery Safes is largely on the increase . These are made to lit in cabinets to suit any kind of wood , and are the best and
cheapest safeguard against lire and thieves . Mitncr ' s Safe Com . panv ( t . invtrd ) , 28 , l- 'insmiry Pavement , K . many of the officers hold in the Craft , and notably the energetic and valuable aid rendered to the charities b y the W . M . elect , Bro . Festa , whose year of office as S . W . was signalised by a list of contributions to the Boys' School amounting to the sum of _ £ iS 2 iSs . 1 id . This for a lodge in the first year of its existence is almost unprecedented ,
and we commend the example to all lodges , both young and old , as an evidence of what earnest and hearty effort can effect in the cause of charity . Bro . Festa will enter on his office with the "Hearty good wishes" of all Masons to whom his genial presence , Masonic ability , and energetic work are known .
