BRO . THE MARQUIS OF ZETLAND has recently acquired the Friary Hall estate , which is situated in the centre of Richmond , Yorkshire , and includes the ancient tower of the Grey Friars . PRINCE AND PRINCESS CHRISTIAN have left Cumberland Lodge , Windsor Park , for Germany , the former having gone to Kissingen to take the waters , while the latter will stay for some time at Bad Nauheim .

THE EMPRESS EUGENIE , in the course of a few days , will leave Farnborough for the purpose of taking up her residence at the Castle of Abergeldie , which has been again placed at her disposal for the autumn by the Queen . A MARRIAGE has been arranged between Miss Gwendoline Peel , youngest daughter of Lady Emily Peel and the late Bro . Sir Robert Peel , Bart ., and Mr . Walter Hamilton Blake , son of Lieut .-Col . 1 . F . Blake , late 3 rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment .

THE MARQUIS OF SALISBURY left London for Portsmouth on Monday , and at once crossed to Osborne , where he had an audience of the Queen . The First Lord of the Admiralty ( Mr . G . J . Goschen ) also arrived on board the Admiralty yacht Enchantress . BEFORE LEAVING TOWN towards the close of last week , H . R . H . the Princess of Wales transmitted to Herr Eduard Strauss a beautiful diamond and ruby scarf pin , in acknowledgment of the pleasure she had derived from her frequent visits to the Imperial Institute to hear the Strauss Orchestra .

MR . GLADSTONE attended the distribution of prizes to the successful competitors at the annual Hawarden Flower Show on Monday , the ceremony taking place on the terrace fronting Hawarden Castle , and the prizes being handed to the winners by Mrs . Gladstone , to whom a vote of thanks was passed by acclamation . AT ISCHI . ON TUESDAY the Emperor Francis Joseph visited the King and Queen of Roumania , who returned with his Majesty to the Imperial villa and joined the Imperial dinner party . Count Goluchowski , the Austro-Hungarian Foreign Minister , with the Imperial and Royal suites , had the honour of being invited .

ACCORDING TO ADVICES from Copenhagen , the King of Denmark was somewhat indisposed last week , suffering from a recurrence of the illness with which he was overtaken in December last . On Saturday last , however , his Majesty was reported better , and since then he has gone further on his way towards recovery . THE GERMAN EMPEROR , on board his yacht the Hohenzollern , arrived off Cowes

on Monday afternoon , and was received with the usual salutes . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales and the Dukes of York and Connaught at once went on board and welcomed his Imperial Majesty , who subsequently landed at East Cowes and was driven to Osborne House , where he was greeted by the Queen , and a dinner party given in his Majesty ' s honour .

A PUBLIC PLEASURE GROUND on the Isle of Dogs , which covers about two and a half acres , and has been tastefully laid out with shrubberies , flower beds , grass plats , & c , was formally opened to the public on Saturday last by _ Mr . W . Crooks , the representative of Poplar on the London County Council and Chairman of the North-east Section of the Open Space Committee , in the presence of a large number of the residents in the district .

AT A MEETING of the Sub-Committee of the Festival in aid of the Alpass Benevolent Institution , the Chairman , Bro . Robert Wylie , D . P . G . M ., P . G . D . Eng ., announced that Bro . Col . Baldwin , LP ., P . P . S . G . W ., Prov . 3 rd G . P . S ., had consented to preside at the Festival , to be held at the Prince of Wales Hotel , Southport , on Wednesday , the 16 th of October next , and we are pleased to say the arrangements are progressing satisfactorily .

THE BRITISH MINISTER at Pekin , acting under orders from the Government , has presented to the Ministers and Council of the Emperor of China a series of demands calling for prompt and condign punishment ot the perpetrators of the recent atrocious murders of British missionaries at the Ku-cheng . The result is that Imperial orders have been issued directing the execution of the offenders and affording protection to English missionaries in China . A DEMONSTRATION was held in Chester Town Hall on Tuesday for the purpose of

denouncing the outrages perpetrated on Armenians . The Duke of Westminster presided , and among those present were the Duchess of Westminster , Mr and Mrs . W . E . Gladstone , the Bishops of Chester and Hereford , the Rev . Stephen Gladstone , Mr . Herbert Gladstone , M . P ., and Lord Kenyon . The meeting was addressed at great length by the ex-Premier , whose speech on behalf of a resolution calling upon the Government to obtain reforms for Armenia was frequently interrupted by hearty cheers , and carried by acclamation .

THE RACE for the Queen ' s Cup on Tuesday ended in a walk or sail over for H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ' s Britannia , the other entries , which included the German Emperor ' s Meteor , Mr . J . THOUGH THE WEATHER was by no means favourable on Bank Holiday , there does not seem to have been any lack of visitors to the various pleasure resorts in and near London , or of excursionists to favourite watering-places . The railway traffic appears to have been enormous , over 73 , 000 travelling by the South Eastern Railway to Gravesend and Margate and other p laces on the coast , while the Great Eastern conveyed about 107 , 000 to Epping I'orest , Broxbourne , Rye House , & c , Yarmouth , Harwich , Walton-on-the-Naze . About 50 , 000 journeyed by the Great Western , while the Great Northern , Midlandj London and North Western , and London , Chatham , and

Dover lines each furnished an enormous contingent to the genera' body . As to the Metropolitan resorts , upwards of 5 6 , 000 persons visited the Crystal Palace , 23 , 226 the Zoological Gardens , 20 , 000 Wembley Park , 15 , 397 the South Kensington Museum , over 10 , 000 the Imperial Institute , and close on 12 , 000 the Natural History Museum . Unfortunately the day did not pass without several accidents , th * : most noteworthy being that which happened at the firework display in Preston Park , Brighton , in connection with the Foresters' High Court , by which some sixteen persons were more or less seriously injured .

S ° , has been presented by the Metropolitan College Rosicrucian Scciety of England , with a Past Celebrant's jewel , on the expiration of his twelve months of office in the chair . AT A MEETING of the Leeds City Council it was resolved , at the instance of the Mayor , tbat an address of welcome should be presented to H . R . H . the Prince of Wales on the occasion of his visit in October to attend the Leeds Musical Festival .

THE SHAHZADA and suite visited the Empire of India Exhibition at Earl ' s Court on Wednesday , and were conducted through the buildings and grounds by Mr . Imre Kiralfy and Mr . Hartley . Before leaving his Highness expressed great delight with the exhibition . THURSDAY , SEPTEMBER 12 TH is fixed for the installation of Bro . A . F . Godson M . P ., as Provincial Grand Master fcr Worcestershire , in the place of the late Bro . Sir E . A . H . Lechmere , Bart , M . P . lhe ceremony will be performed at Worcester b y the Earl of Lathom , the Pro Grand Master .

IN ACCORDANCE with ancient custom the usual summer issue of venison warrants has been made by her Majesty ' s First Commissioner of Works , the Right Hon . the Lord Mayor receiving two brace of bucks , the Sheriffs three bucks each , and the Recorder Town Clerk , Common Sergeant , Remembrancer , and Chamberlain one each . THIS YEAR there are on the Thames 379 swans , old and young , belonging to the Queen and the Dyers' and Vintners' Companies . The census is taken annually by her Majesty ' s Swanherd and the officials of the City Guilds , who mark the birds according to their ownership , and the voyage which is undertaken for this purpose covers about 60 miles of the river , from Southwark Bridge to Marsh Lock , Henley .

AN ACCOMPLISHED Russian lady , Baroness He . ene Tornauw , who is a member of the Anglo-Russian Literary Society of London , is bringing out an interesting historical work , in French , on a new principle , bearing the modest title , " Petite Histoire des Siecles "— " dediee h la jeunesse . " It is being translated into English , German , and Russian , and may produce a wholesome revolution in the art of teaching history .

THE CRICKET WEEK at Canterbury opened on Monday under very unfavourable conditions as regards the weather . In the opening match , Kent v . Warwickshire , rain put a stop to play when the visitors had put together 128 for the loss ofeight wickets . On Tuesday Warwickshire closed its innings for 144 , and Kent , going in , made 27 S ; Warwickshire were beaten ultimately in one innings by 15 runs .

AMONG THOSE to whom honours have been awarded by the Senate of the Smithsonian Institute , Washington , are Lord Rayleigh and Professor Ramsay , Mr . F . A . Russell , to whom has been assigned a silver medal with honourable mention ; and Mr . H . S . Maxim , who receives a bronze medal and mention . Mr . E . C . C . Daly , of London , and Mr . Cohen , of Leeds , have been mentioned .

THE DEATH IS ANNOUNCED of Bro . Thos . Bowman , of Stockton . The deceased , who had been in business for a considerable number of years , had of late suffered from a paralytic stroke . He was a highly respected member of the Craft , and was a P . AI . of the Lodge of Fraternity , No . 141 S , Stockton . Bro . Bowman was 62 years of age . The deceased ' s remains were interred in Stockton Cemetery , Oxbridge .

ON THURSDAY MORNING the German Emperor paid another visit to his ironclad Woerth , and bade farewell to the commander of the German squadron , after which the war-vessels left for Wilhelmshaven . His Majesty in the afternoon held a reception r > n board the Hohenzollern , and in the evening was present at a dinner party given by H . R H . thc Prince of Wales to a number of guests on board the yacht Osborne . The Emperor leaves an Sunday morning for Lord Lonsdale's castle by special train .

HALF-DAY IN SHAKESPEARE ' S COUNTRY . —The London and North-Western Railway Company announce that , owing to the success of their half-day trips to Shakespeare ' s Country , they will , on Thursday , August 15 th , run a cheap excursion to Stratford-on-Avon , leaving London ( Euston ) , 12 . 30 noon , Kensington ( Addison-road ) , 12 . 12 noon , Willesden Junction , 12 . 40 noon , and other stations in connection , returning from Stratford-on-Avon , at 7 . 40 p . m . the same day . THE MEDALS and decorations of Lord Nelson , which were recently purchased by the Treasury from Lord Bridport for the nation , have been handed over to the authorities of the Koyal Hospital , Greenwich , and will shortly be placed with the other relics of the great Admiral in the Painted Hall . The Hospital has also become possessed of Nelson ' s gold sword hilt , presented to him by the captains who served at the Nile , and the gold box which contained the freedom of the City . These have been presented to it by Mr . J . A . Mullens , of Weybridge .

THE QUEEN has been pleased to approve of the appointment of the Bishop of Rochester to the Bishopric of Winchester , rendered vacant by the death of the Right Rev . Thorold . Dr . Dandren , who is thus translated to a higher dignity , was born at Edinburgh and educated at Harrow and Oxford . He was ordained in 1 S 74 and married a daughter of Archbishop Tait , whom he served as chaplain and private secretary from 1 S 77 to 1 SS 2 . Subsequently he became Chaplain and Sub-Almoner to the Queen , Dean ot Windsor , and Registrar of the Orderof the Garter , and in 18 S 5 was consecrated as Bishop of Rochester .

BRO . LORD NORTON , Master of the Shipwrights' Company , at a court held by permission at the Fishmongers' Hall , on Wednesday , presented the Duchess of Rutland , whose husband is a Past Master of the company , with a handsome marble bust of herself , by Signor Raggi , subscribed for by the members in recognition of her and her husband s services to the Guild . Among those present were the Duke ot Rutland , Bro . Sir Ed ward Clarke , Q . C ., Bro . Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., M . P , Sir W . A . Ogg , and Sir J . H . Johnson . The Duchess gracefully acknowledged the gift , after which the Duke and the rest ot the visitors were entertained at dinner .

A CHINESE FREEMASON ' S FUNERAL . —Near Pittsburg , Pennsylvania , the othei day , Lee Jin Mun , a Chinese Freemason , died , and would probably have attracted no further attention outside his own little circle had not his funeral struck the American journals as grotesque even for a Chinese ceremony . After secret ceremonies at tne nouse , the body was deposited in a casket . A table was spread with the provisions which are to sustain the spirit in its ne * home . These included J . piece of fat roast porltanother ot raw pork , two chickens , cuoked with the heads and legs on , and ali kinds ot burncu

fruit and sweetmeats . At one end of the table was a box of sand , in which coloured candles an J Joss sticks . Before this officials knelt and said their prayers . A DEMONSTRATION was held in Chester Town Hall on Tuesday for the purpose of

denouncing the outrages perpetrated on Armenians . The Duke of Westminster presided , and among those present were the Duchess of Westminster , Mr and Mrs . W . E . Gladstone , the Bishops of Chester and Hereford , the Rev . Stephen Gladstone , Mr . Herbert Gladstone , M . P ., and Lord Kenyon . The meeting was addressed at great length by the ex-Premier , whose speech on behalf of a resolution calling upon the Government to obtain reforms for Armenia was frequently interrupted by hearty cheers , and carried by acclamation .

THE RACE for the Queen ' s Cup on Tuesday ended in a walk or sail over for H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ' s Britannia , the other entries , which included the German Emperor ' s Meteor , Mr . J . THOUGH THE WEATHER was by no means favourable on Bank Holiday , there does not seem to have been any lack of visitors to the various pleasure resorts in and near London , or of excursionists to favourite watering-places . THIS YEAR there are on the Thames 379 swans , old and young , belonging to the Queen and the Dyers' and Vintners' Companies . The census is taken annually by her Majesty ' s Swanherd and the officials of the City Guilds , who mark the birds according to their ownership , and the voyage which is undertaken for this purpose covers about 60 miles of the river , from Southwark Bridge to Marsh Lock , Henley .

AN ACCOMPLISHED Russian lady , Baroness He . ene Tornauw , who is a member of the Anglo-Russian Literary Society of London , is bringing out an interesting historical work , in French , on a new principle , bearing the modest title , " Petite Histoire des Siecles "— " dediee h la jeunesse . " It is being translated into English , German , and Russian , and may produce a wholesome revolution in the art of teaching history .

THE CRICKET WEEK at Canterbury opened on Monday under very unfavourable conditions as regards the weather . In the opening match , Kent v . Warwickshire , rain put a stop to play when the visitors had put together 128 for the loss ofeight wickets . On Tuesday Warwickshire closed its innings for 144 , and Kent , going in , made 27 S ; Warwickshire were beaten ultimately in one innings by 15 runs .

THE DEATH IS ANNOUNCED of Bro . Thos . Bowman , of Stockton . The deceased , who had been in business for a considerable number of years , had of late suffered from a paralytic stroke . He was a highly respected member of the Craft , and was a P . AI . of the Lodge of Fraternity , No . 141 S , Stockton . Bro . Bowman was 62 years of age . The deceased ' s remains were interred in Stockton Cemetery , Oxbridge .

ON THURSDAY MORNING the German Emperor paid another visit to his ironclad Woerth , and bade farewell to the commander of the German squadron , after which the war-vessels left for Wilhelmshaven . His Majesty in the afternoon held a reception r > n board the Hohenzollern , and in the evening was present at a dinner party given by H . R H . thc Prince of Wales to a number of guests on board the yacht Osborne . The Emperor leaves an Sunday morning for Lord Lonsdale's castle by special train .

THE MEDALS and decorations of Lord Nelson , which were recently purchased by the Treasury from Lord Bridport for the nation , have been handed over to the authorities of the Koyal Hospital , Greenwich , and will shortly be placed with the other relics of the great Admiral in the Painted Hall . The Hospital has also become possessed of Nelson ' s gold sword hilt , presented to him by the captains who served at the Nile , and the gold box which contained the freedom of the City . These have been presented to it by Mr . J . A . Mullens , of Weybridge .

THE QUEEN has been pleased to approve of the appointment of the Bishop of Rochester to the Bishopric of Winchester , rendered vacant by the death of the Right Rev . Thorold . Dr . Dandren , who is thus translated to a higher dignity , was born at Edinburgh and educated at Harrow and Oxford . He was ordained in 1 S 74 and married a daughter of Archbishop Tait , whom he served as chaplain and private secretary from 1 S 77 to 1 SS 2 . Subsequently he became Chaplain and Sub-Almoner to the Queen , Dean ot Windsor , and Registrar of the Orderof the Garter , and in 18 S 5 was consecrated as Bishop of Rochester .

BRO . LORD NORTON , Master of the Shipwrights' Company , at a court held by permission at the Fishmongers' Hall , on Wednesday , presented the Duchess of Rutland , whose husband is a Past Master of the company , with a handsome marble bust of herself , by Signor Raggi , subscribed for by the members in recognition of her and her husband s services to the Guild . Among those present were the Duke ot Rutland , Bro . Sir Ed ward Clarke , Q . C ., Bro . Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., M . P , Sir W . A . Ogg , and Sir J . H . Johnson . The Duchess gracefully acknowledged the gift , after which the Duke and the rest ot the visitors were entertained at dinner .

A CHINESE FREEMASON ' S FUNERAL . —Near Pittsburg , Pennsylvania , the othei day , Lee Jin Mun , a Chinese Freemason , died , and would probably have attracted no further attention outside his own little circle had not his funeral struck the American journals as grotesque even for a Chinese ceremony . After secret ceremonies at tne nouse , the body was deposited in a casket . A table was spread with the provisions which are to sustain the spirit in its ne * home .
