Death Of Earl Dalhousie.
DEATH OF EARL DALHOUSIE .
We regret to announce to the Craft th I ! death of our lamented and distinguished I brother , the Earl of Dalhousie , better known 9 perhaps , as Lend Panmure . As Grand
Master of Scotland , : md as Djputy Grand Master j of England , he has rendered great services to our Fraternity in both countries , and his decease will be a subject of much regret to
many old friends and associates , as well as to I the Craft at large . We hope in our nest im- pression , to give a short sketch of his long I and distinguished career . 9
The following has appeared 111 a morning contemporary : — "The announcements which have appeared from day to day respecting the illness of the Eail
of Dalhousie , will in some degree have prepared the public for the intelligence of his lordship ' s death , which , we regret to state , took place at Brechin Castle at ten minutes
past eleven o ' clock , on Tuesday night . The deceased peer , who was Lord-Lieutenant of Forfarshire , was born April 22 nd , 1801 ; succeeded his father as Baron Panmure in 1852 ,
and his cousin as Earl of Dalhouise in i 860 ; entered the 79 th Highlanders , 1819 : served in Canada , and retired as captain , 1831 , was M . P . for Perthshire , 1835-75 ; for the Elgin
Burghs , 1838-41 ; and for Perth , 1841-52 , I Under Secretary for the Home Department : 1835-4 1 j Vice-President of the Board of Trade , 1841 : Secretary at War , 1846-52 ; and
President of the Hoard of Control , 1852 . Appointed Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland , 18 . 13 5 elected Lord Rector of Glasgow University , 1842 , and was a Governor of the
Charterhouse : married ( 1831 ) the Hon . Montagu Abercromby , eldest daughter of the second Baron Abercomby ( tin ' s lady died in 1 1853 ) . The successor to the title is his lordship ' s cousin , George Ramsay , R . N ., C . B .,
1 son of the Hon . J ohn Ramsay . I" Lady Christian Maule received an autograph letter and a telegram from her Majesty expressing the regret with which she had
I heard of the serious illness and death of the 1 Earl of Dalhousie . It is expected that the funeral of the late earl will take place next Tuesday , in the churchyard of Panbride , Forfarshire . j ___ I
