Provincial Meetings.
The toast was received very heartily , and the Worshipful Master said , in reply , that he thanked Bro . Ellis for the very flattering way he had spoken of him , and the brethren for the hearty response they had given to the toast . Pie felt that he had attained to the height of his ambition that evening when placed in the chair of so well known a lodge , and he assured the brethren that he would use his best endeavours to merit
their choice , and if at the end of his year of office he had given satisfaction he would be amply repaid . He intended to do his best and try hard to increase its members . He also stated that he intended representing the lodge at the next Festival of the R . M . I , for Boys , and he hoped the brethren would support him on that occasion . The Worshipful Master then proposed the toast of " The
Visitors , " remarking what a pleasure it was to see so many with them that evening . He assured them that it was a delight to see so many who had visited them before come amongst them again . It was one of the great advantages of Freemasonry that they were allowed to visit other lodges ; it was a means of making many friends and getting on terms of greater intimacy with those they already knew . He
had himself met many visitors at other lodges whom he now had the pleasure of numbering among his friends . He hoped they had spent a pleasant evening , and would pay the lodge another visit at the earliest opportunity . A great number of the visitors responded to the toast . The W . M . next gave "The Past Masters , " which was
responded to by Bro . Kllis , P . M . The toasts of " The Treasurer and Secretary " and "The Officers of the Lodge" were given in due course , and the Tyler ' s toast wound up a very successful meeting . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Bro . Jackson , P . M ., assisted by several professional brethren .
EXETER . St . John the Baptist Lodge ( No . 39 ) . — The first meeting- after the recess was held on Thursday evening , the 25 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall . The W . M ., Bro . Francis Luget , presided , and there was a larg - e attendance of members of the lodge and visitors . The latter included Bro . T . J . Railing , P . A . G . D . C . England , P . G . Sec .
Essex , who , being on a visit to the city , had been invited to attend . A ballot having been taken for a candidate for initiation , and proving favourable , the gentleman was initiated by the W . M ., assisted by Bro . J . Jerman , P . M . The charge was given by Bro . John Stocker , Prov . J . G . W ., and the lecture by Bro . W . H . " Kelland , J . W . Notice of motion had been given by Bro . A . Hope , S . D . — "That this lodge
apply to be admitted as a correspondence member of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , at an annual subscription of halfa-guinea , " —and that brother now brought forward the proposition , forcibly urging upon the brethren the advantages to be derived by the lodge in having the periodical publications of the Quatuor Coronati , all of which were most interesting to Masonic students . The proposition having been
seconded by Bro . J . Jerman , P . M ., P . P . G . S . of W ., was unanimously adopted . Bro . Wm . Easton , P . M ., P . P . G . S . of W ., then rose and moved that the hearty congratulations of the lodge be g iven to Bro . John Stocker on his appointment as Provincial Junior Grand Warden , remarking that that appointment was richly deserved , as Bro . Stocker was one of the most useful , hard-working , and
highly respected members of the lodge . He also considered that Bro . Stacker ' s appointment was an honour upon the lodge . The proposition having been seconded by the S . W ., Bro . T . Seymour , the W . M . said he had great pleasure in supporting it . He heartily endorsed all that had been said as to the useful work that was always being done by Bro . John Stocker , adding that so strongly did
they feel on that subject , that a few of them had hastily conferred together , and determined to take the first opportunity since the meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge to present to Bro . Stocker the jewel of his new rank as a mark of the esteem in which he was held . In affixing the jewel to the breast of Bro . Stocker , the VV . M . said that nothing during his year of office had given him
greater pleasure than to be the medium of that Tittle presentation . Bro . John Stocker , who was received with hearty and long continued applause , said the brethren had taken him completely by surprise by what had just taken place . He had met during the last few days many of the members of St . John ' s , who had given him their congratulations , but they had all kept the secret of that handsome
jewel . He could assure them that he felt their kindness most deeply—too deeply for words—for he felt that it was through them having brought him into such prominence in appointing him to represent them on the Committee of Petitions , and also in bringing him forward last year and assisting to carry his election as Provincial Grand Treasurer that he owed his present position . There might be some
perhaps who felt that he ought not under the circumstances to have accepted his present appointment , but on receiving the kind offer of the Provincial Grand Master he had no hesitation in doing so , for he felt that his lordship wished to show his appreciation of the work the St . John ' s Lodge was doing in the person of one of its most prominent members . He personally felt deeply the high honour that had been
conferred upon himself , and also the kind feeling with which his appointment had been received by his brethren . The W . M . then called attention to the fact that there was present Bro . Raffing , who they were much pleased to see , and he proposed that a record be made on the minutes of their most cordial welcome . Bro . John Stocker asked to be allowed to second the proposal of the Worshipful
Master . He thought , perhaps , many of those present were not aware of the distinguished brother they had the pleasure of having amongst them that night . Not only was he Provincial Grand Secretary of " the large Province of Essex , which meant a great deal of Masonic work , but he was one of those brethren who was selected for Grand Office by his Royal Highness the Grand
Master at that wonderful meeting at the Albert Hall in celebration of the Jubilee of her Majesty the Oueen . Personally , he was much pleased that Bro . Railing had come amongst them , and he cordially endorsed the words of welcome that had fallen from the Worshipful Master . Bro . Railing , who was cordially received , thanked the W . M . and brethren for their truly fraternal greeting . As an ardent
Mason , it had given him great pleasure to accept their kind invitation , and he had been particularly pleased to have had an opportunity of seeing their excellent working , and also learning something , and to have witnessed the interesting presentation that had been made to Bro . Stocker . The lodge was shortly afterwards closed , and refreshment succeeded labour .

Buxton , the genial host of the Horns . The usual toasts followed . "The Health of the M . E . Z . " was fluently proposed by the I . P . Z . In the course of his remarks he congratulated
Comp . Westley upon his excellent working of the ceremony , which was in every respect a praiseworthy performance . _ The M . E . Z . acknowledged the compliment in fitting terms . " The Second and Third Principals " followed . In giving this toast the M . E . Z . said that , whilst regretting the absence of Comps . Salter and Dowling - , he was gratified at
receiving such excellent support from two such old and well tried Masons as those who had occupied the positions pro tern , that evening . Comps . Ayling and Walls having responded , "The Health of the Exaltee" came next in order . In his reply Comp . Lundie expressed his gratification for being admitted a member of the Degree , and more
especially as he was exalted by the First Principal , who was also the W . M . of the mother lodge . Comp . G . Gardner made an eloquent reply in acknowledging " The Health of the Past Principals . " In proposing the toast of " The S . E . and Treasurer , " the M . E . Z . remarked that the chapter owed a great deal to the efforts of those companions . They worked harmoniously
together for the common good . In speaking of the latter officer , the M . E . Z . hoped that the rumours he had heard were true that their genial Treasurer would be Grand Treasurer elect in December next . If , however , a contest was forced upon the Craft , he felt confident that Comp . George Everett's supporters—who even now numbered
nearly 1400—would place him by a large majority at the top of the poll . Comps . Higgins and Everett having replied , the toast of " The Officers , " coupled with the names of Comps . Austin , Sims , and Smith , terminated the proceedings . In the intervals of the speeches Comps . Everett , Ayling , Gardner , Lundie , and Buxton entertained the members .
