As far as the Pattison Lodge was concerned , they had no reason to complain . Last year Bro . Mason received the

Clarke ) was beautifully rendered by the lodge choir . Bro . Sir R . N . Howard then rose and asked the lodge to accept his portrait , which he had had painted

especially for them , as a token and remembrance of the many pleasant hours he had spent there . Bro . Howard , who was one of the founders and first W . M . of the Portland Lodge , then briefly spoke on its history and the object of its being founded , congratulating the VV . M . and brethren on its nourishing condition , and stating that the large number of military and naval brethren present that evening proved how well the objects of the founders had been

realised . The W . M ., in accepting the gift on behalf of the lodge , assured Bro . Sir R , N . Howard that it would always find an honoured place within the lodge , and proposed a very hearty vote of thanks , which was seconded by Bro . J . W . Board , I . P . M ., and carried by acclamation . Mr . Chas . Walter Freeman was then duly admitted into Freemasonry , the VV . M . being specially assisted on this occasion by several Past Misters of the lodge , Bro . C . J .

Freeman — the candidate's father — giving the obligation , and the Rev . W . M . Heath P . G . Chap ., ling ., acting as Chap , during the ceremony . "Hearty good wishes " having been expressed by the visiting brethren , the lodge was closed . The brethren then adjourned to a banquet at which about Co sat down , and , after the cloth had been removed , the W . M . gave the usual loyal and Alasonic toasts , which

were duly honoured . Bro . E . Mills , P . M ., then proposed the toast of " The Pro Grand Alaster , the Dep . Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " stating that the lodge was indeed gratified with the presence of two Grand Officers that evening , one of whom was a P . M . of that lodge , and the fact of Bro . Sir R . N . Howard being present on that occasion formed but one

more proof of the good feeling which he had towards Portland Lodge , he having crowned this event by presenting the lodge with a valuable portrait of himself , which he ( Bro . Mills ) felt sure would be highly prized by the brethren , and that the newly-made brother would look back as years rolled on with proud and pleasing remembrance of the happy day he was initiated into Freemasonry . Bro . Rev . M . Heath , in responding , congratulated the

VV . M . on the excellent work he had witnessed in the ceremony that evening , and said it gave him the greatest pleasure to visit Portland Lodge at any time , and Bro . Sir R . N . Howard thanked the brethren for the cordial way they had received the toast , and said that as the only remaining founder and first W . M . of Portland Lodge , nothing gave him greater pleasure than to assist the lodge in any way .

The W . M . then , in proposing the toast of "The Prov . Grand Officers , " said that it afforded him the highest pleasure to see around him so many distinguished brethren , and assured them that whenever they honoured Portland I ^ odge with their presence they would receive an equally hearty welcome . Several present and past officers having suitably

responded , the toas ' s of " lhe Worshipful Master , " " The Past Masters , " and "The Visitors , " were duly honoured . Bro . Sir R . N . Howard then gave in graceful terms the toast of "The Initiate . " He said it was a unique experience in Freemasonry to witness the initiation of a gentleman who was not only a Lewis , but also already a

Vice-Patron of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution with the very large number of 1 S 0 votes to his credit , which was a most valuable addition to the voting power not only of Portland Lodge but also of the Province of Dorset . Bro . C . W . Freeman was the son of our much respected Charity Steward , Bro . C . V . Freeman , P . M . He had come to the lodge with an honourable record from school and

college , and , while wishing him every success in h- ' s future career , trusted that the events of that evening would never be effaced from his memory , feeling well assured that he would follow the Masonic footsteps of his father and make his mark in the Craft . Bro . C W . Freeman , in responding , thanked the lodge for the honour they had done him in his initiation into

Freemasonry . He hoped to be enabled for many years to come to exercise these Charity votes , for he assured the brethren that they would always be at the disposal of Portland Lodge for the benefit of poorer brethren and their widows . The toast of "The Masonic Charities" having been

given by Bro . Sir R . N . Howard , was responded to by Bros . Z . Milledge , P . M . 170 , Vice-Chairman of the Dorset Masonic Charity , and C . Y . Freeman , P . AL , Charity Steward of the lodge . Other toasts followed , and the Tyler ' s toast concluded a most successful and enjoyable evening .

After a well-served banquet , the customary toasts were heartily given and received , the speeches being marked by commendable brevity . Several songs and recitations were admirably rendered by the musical brethren , and the Tyler's toast brought the proceedings to a close .

TAVISTOCK . Bedford Lodge ( No . 282 ) . —The above lodge held its annual meeting at its new home in West-street on the 3 rd inst ., Bro . S . Richards presiding , supported by his officers , Bros . Grand Lodge for permission to remove the lodge from the Abbey to the new premises , 84 ,

West-street , whose sanction was certified by the signature of Bros . Viscount Ebrington , Prov . G . Master , and Major G . C . Davie , P . G . Secretary . That permission was officially accepted , and directed to be entered in the minutes of the lodge . The removal was stated to have arisen from the want of the extension of the accommodation of the library in the Abbey . The new Masonic Hall , a

handsome and convenient suite of rooms , had been converted by the Duke of Bedford from a former ancient public-house , no longer required , annexed to the Corn Market , into excellent accommodation for the brethren . Thanks were voted to the W . M . elect , Bro . J . D . Williams for his handsome present to the lodge of a complete new suite of collars for the lodge officers . Bro .

John Davey Williams was installed VV . M ., Bro . Thomas Chapman being the Installing Officer who conducted the whole of the ceremony in a very admirable manner . The only defect the visitors ventured to suggest was that they considered there was too much work thrown upon him , and his admirable talents somewhat overtaxed . He was supported by the Past Masters present already recorded . The

new officers appointed were Bros . S . Richards , l . P . M . j J . B . Chapman , S . W . j H . Skinner , J . W . j J . D . Johnstone , Chap , j G . Merrifield , Treas . j T . Kerslake , Secj W . Merrifield has also been re-elected the

representative at the Committee of Petitions and Charity Steward . At the close of the business , 40 of the brethren adjourned to dine together at the Bedford Hotel , where a very pleasant evening was passed . The new W . M . presided . In the usual toasts which followed , the Chairman , in proposing " The Health of the Grand Master , the Prince of Wales , " quoted the sentiments of that distinguished Mason

when he was appointed Grand Alaster of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons— " As long as Freemasonry continues as it is now , an organ of Charity and usefulness , it will flourish . " In replying for "The Visitors , " Bro . F . E . Remfry , a distinguished military traveller , gave a very interesting account of his travels in noticing Masonic records . He had visited the remains of the foundations of King

Solomon's Temple with other officers , and had pointed out the ancient Masonic marks it still bore . Other ancient buildings in the Fast , the temples of ancient Greece and Rome , our earlier cathedrals , and the Masonic records , all showed the great age of Masonry . Bro . Allsford gave an account of the great progress of the Masonic Charities , and the important claims they had for support from every brother . In Devon they were now doing great good , and with increased support , and in some instances improved management , they could do much more .

The minutes of the previous convocation were read and

confirmed . The chapter was then closed , and the coin , panions adjourned to a banquet . The customary toasts received full justice . The I . P . Z . proposed the toast of " The M . E . Z . " He said that it was a source of gratification to all the members of the chapter that Comp . Smith had sufficiently recovered to be once more amongst them . They had to thank him for having provided them on many occasions with an

excellent and delightful programme of music . He ( the speaker ) trusted that for many years the chapter might have the benefit of the M . E . Z . 's mature advice , musical gifts , and genial companionship . The toast having been warmly received , The M . E . Z . duly acknowledged the compliment . In the course of his remarks , he stated that he had despaired of ever seeing them again . The Jerusalem Chanter had

always been to him a most cherished institution . He had entered it as a young man , he had seen many dear friends and fellow Masonic workers leave it to join the great majority , but he was pleased to say that there were still two members left who knew him in his youthful days , viz ., Comps . Harfeld and Moss . He thanked them for the vote of thanks that they had passed to him at the last meeting , and particularly for the compliment they had paid to his

family for their modest musical entertainment . Comps . Harfeld and Moss responded to the toast of "The Past Principals , " and Comp . G . Davis for "The Officers . " The remainder of the evening was pleasantly devoted to melody . The talented family of the M . E . Z ., assisted by several friends , gave an excellent instrumental and vocal display . It is needless to say that the members werc vastly delighted with the varied and charming programme .

Duke of Connaught Chapter ( No . ' 5-4 ) . —A convocation of this chapter was held at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street , on Wednesday , the ioth inst . The chapter was closed , and after an excellent repast ,

the customary toasts were honoured . In proposing "The Health of the M . E . Z , " Comp . N . Green , P . Z ., paid a high tribute to the excellent working of Comp . Hodges , who throughout his connection with the chapter , had showed a zeal and interest in it which those who succeeded him would do well to follow . Comp . T . G . Hodges , M . E . Z ., in reply , thanked the companions for their kindness , andexoressed his reirret that

illness had caused the abstnee of several members . Hc was exceedingly gratified at the complimentary remarks made respecting his working , and was of opinion that if the companions coming on for office would seriously endeavour to learn the duties , there was no reason why thc chapter should not retain its reputation for good working . Proceeding to propose " The Exaltees , " he cordially welcomed Comps . Gale and Linnett into the chapterand hoped

, they would become shining lights in Royal Arch Masonry . Comps . Gale and Linnett responded , and having remarked upon the deep impression made upon them by the excellent rendering of the beautiful ritual , said they would earnestly strive to attain the princi pal chair in the chapter . In giving ;¦ The Visitors , " the M . E . Z . extended to them all a cordial welcome , and heartily thanked Comp . Hattersley , P . Z ., for his kind assistance rendered as P . S-

M ., Bro . Thomas Chapman being the Installing Officer who conducted the whole of the ceremony in a very admirable manner . representative at the Committee of Petitions and Charity Steward .
